Alright, so I left off with us just arriving in Entebbe, Uganda. After we met up with Frank and Gena, Frank took us for lunch at this cute little restaurant just off the shores of Lake Victoria. We had a fantastic first meal here, with a beautiful backdrop, before we made our way to our hostel, where we would be staying the first couple nights. It was easy to settle in to our temporary home, as was actually quite a bit nicer than we expected. It included hot, running water, functioning electricity and western style toilet. Not too shabby! I had to appreciate every hot shower I had because it very likely may be my last for a long time. Once we got unpacked, we decided to do some exploring by foot of the city. We ... read more

Day 11- the journey to Rugazi village....07:00 am the six of us are all packed up again and walking over to the university from the residence. Life Lesson 3: pack light because at some point in your travels you will have to haul luggage for a far distance and possibly up and down sets of stairs (got in my cardio for the day hahaha). Best part was hauling heavy luggage accross the busy highway, lets just say it was a bunch of women running like mad and screaming. Once at the university we sat around for 2 and 1/2 hours for everyone to arrive and arrange luggage. Once everyone was assigned to their bus, lugagge and other equipment was packed, we managed to leave at 10:00 am. My group managed to be assigned to the "menopause ... read more

Hello everyone , I finally have consistent internet. Currently I am at Rugazi village for my four week placement and the weather is hot and I finally got a little sunburnt today. Anyways like the title of this blog I am going to briefly tell you about my first 12 days of my trip. Day 1- At 05:45 am my lovely friend drove me to the airport where I met up with four other group members from the University of Saskatchewan at the Saskatoon airport. Our flights go from Saskatoon, Toronto, Dubai then Entebbe. Once the four of us landed in Toronto international airport, we had a 10 hour layover there....long but we were able to take the time to get to know each other better. The flight from Toronto to Dubai was a 12 hour ... read more

Geo: -1.28116, 29.6808Today we headed out for our travels to Kisoro. Our guide, Everest, met us at Nkuringo Gorilla Camp and we drove to our drop off point to begin our walk to Lake Matunda. This part of the walk was mostly on narrow dirt, rock, sand road used mainly by locals who walk, bicycle of motor cycle to and fro. We walked by many subsistence farming areas and, once again, the children almost appear out of nowhere to say hello to the masungas. After about 2 1/2hours we arrived at Lake Matunda. It is a lovely lake with very lush islands dotted here and there. Some were even being farmed. Because the area is so hilly the farms are all terraced which makes them even more scenic. The land looks very fertile and the main ... read more

Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796July 8th, 2014Today was a travel day from Fort Portal to the Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge in near Queen Elizabeth National Park. This will be our home for the next 4 days.We took the Link bus from Fort Portal to Kasese, which is less than 2 hours with several stops along the way. In Kasese, we hired a car to drive us to the Lodge. When tourists get off a bus, we are a spectacle because it is not super common, and we are hounded by offers for boda-bodas (motorcycles); matatus (van taxis) and, to a lesser degree, hired private cars. As I mentioned before, people are not super aggressive but they are vying for your business so there is lots of activity and assurances that theirs is the best way. We finally hired ... read more

Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796Today we spent the whole day with the chimpanzees at Kanyanchu in Kibale National Forest. This area is dedicated to habituating chimps for tourism. It takes 5 – 10 years for chimps to get used to humans being close by and right now there is only one colony in this area that is habituated. We arrived just before 7am and were able to observe this group waking up and moving out of their nests, stretching, doing their morning grooming in the lower canopy, the odd one taking a dump or urinating. There is not much chatter among them at this time of day. They get much more vocal as the day goes on.Then they start coming down out of the trees which is an awesome sight to see. They are so incredibly casual about ... read more

Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796Today we visited the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This is a small sanctuary which protects the Magombe Swamp. It is a great example of conservation and tourism and it also directly benefits the local community. All the money raised from the trail is used in community projects in Bigodi. It has already funded a library and a secondary school in the village. The extremely well-informed guides make the walk all the more enjoyable. Our guide, Alex, could spot birds we might have otherwise missed as well as small creatures like frogs, snails and centipedes and a good sized lizard with a yellow body and brilliant blue head and tail. We saw a lot of birds, for which this area is most famous. We saw Great Blue Turacos, Greenbuls, Weavers that look a bit like Grosbeaks ... read more

Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796We are taking a day of leisure today to figure out the plan for the next few days and get some medical attention for Richard. He has had a cold, cough for too long now and it doesn't seem to be getting much better. After a long breakfast chatting with the owner of the Guest House, Inica, we headed into town which is a nice walk and the weather is perfect. Not too hot and not too cold. We first went to the Alpine Clinic to get Richard taken care of – antibiotics and antihistamine then went to Kabarole Tours to work out plans for the next few days. We have 5 days planned now so we are set until we get to Queen Elizabeth National Park. There is a lot to do as ... read more

Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796Up early again and headed to catch the bus to Kampala and then on to Fort Portal. We had debated taking the bus on hard surfaced roads versus a shorter trip, in kilometers, via matatus but after yesterday on bumpy, dusty roads, we opted for the bus. After about 10 hours we are now in Fort Portal relaxing at the Rwenzori View Guest House –a lovely, quiet, respite from the noise and pollution of the day. Ugandan's love loud music so the bus ride is anything but relaxing. We plan to use this as our base camp for the next 4- 6 days as we explore Kibale National Forest and environs.Dinner at the Guest House was very good and enjoyable. The place is full with travelers from around the world. We chatted with a ... read more

Geo: 2.2456, 31.802Happy New Year! We headed off for a game drive early so we could see as many animals grazing as possible. And we did! We saw hippos when we crossed the Nile for the game drive and later further into the park. We saw Bush Backs, Water Backs, lots and lots of cob, baboons everywhere, lots of warthogs some with babies – so cute!, a monitor lizard, spotted hyena, buffalo, a lion and two cubs and later 2 males lazing in the sun, elephants and giraffe. Some far off, some close but it was all very cool because we were seeing them in their natural habitat.Plenty of birds too. Storks are everywhere. We saw a Bataleur Eagle, Gray Kestral, African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher, African Jacana and Abyssinian Scimitar Bills, Guinea hens – just ... read more
