In the afternoon Ben, Gena and I went to Saint Michael’s High school to arrange a presentation to their students towards hand hygiene and latrine cleanliness. The meeting was successful and the school agreed to having a presentation and after that event Rugazi group B went to meet with the local Village Health Team (VHT) about collaborating in the a workshop towards latrine cleanliness that is set for the coming up Tuesday. Day 18- Saturday June 7th-Breakfast we had homemade somosas (yummy!!). Early in the morning we had a fairly bad rain/hail storm and then for the rest of the day it was sunny out. Lounged around the health centre and played volleyball with a homemade ball (made out of plastic bags and yarn) and made new friends. Had a group meeting in the evening about our community project. It was a fairly quiet day. Day 19- had chapattis for breakfast and chicken for lunch!!!! Another quiet day and a late group meeting. Day 20- Mike and I changed up our "ward rounds" and went to General ward for the week. Mariam a Ugandan student nurse also joined us. Day 11- the journey to Rugazi village....07:00 am the six of us are all packed up again and walking over to the university from the residence. Life Lesson 3: pack light because at some point in your travels you will have to haul luggage for a far distance and possibly up and down sets of stairs (got in my cardio for the day hahaha). Best part was hauling heavy luggage accross the busy highway, lets just say it was a bunch of women running like mad and screaming. Once at the university we sat around for 2 and 1/2 hours for everyone to arrive and arrange luggage. Once everyone was assigned to their bus, lugagge and other equipment was packed, we managed to leave at 10:00 am. My group managed to be assigned to the "menopause ... read more

Hello everyone , I finally have consistent internet. Currently I am at Rugazi village for my four week placement and the weather is hot and I finally got a little sunburnt today. Anyways like the title of this blog I am going to briefly tell you about my first 12 days of my trip. Day 1- At 05:45 am my lovely friend drove me to the airport where I met up with four other group members from the University of Saskatchewan at the Saskatoon airport. Our flights go from Saskatoon, Toronto, Dubai then Entebbe. Once the four of us landed in Toronto international airport, we had a 10 hour layover there....long but we were able to take the time to get to know each other better. The flight from Toronto to Dubai was a 12 hour ... read more

This is the very first blog I have ever created and well it feels very foreign to me. Within the next several weeks I will embark on a new journey and experience things that I have never before. Currently I am squatting at one of my closest friends apartment (thank you Brittany!!!) in Saskatoon preparing for my flight to Entebbe, Uganda. I guess the theme of this summer will be 'wanderlust'- the desire to wander or explore the world, yes it sounds cheesy but spending a month in a foreign country is definitely out of the norm for me. So there will be a lot of learning occurring these next couple of months. One is using a new forum, two learning about a new language and culture, three new job when I get back from this ... read more
