Today starts like all of the other days with an early morning so we could do a game drive. Here we saw many more elephants, and witnessed, in my opinion, the cutest animal interaction of the safari. A pack of elephants were crossing the road behind us, along with a few babies (so adorable!) and one of the babies was so little it struggled to climb overtop of a mound of dirt on the side of the road. Mom came up from behind and gently pushed it, with her trunk, helping it get to the other side! Like something straight out of Dumbo! Out of all the baby animals we watched, elephants are by far my favourite! They're so cute and clumsy, swinging their big trunks from side to side and around in circles. Aside from ... read more

Jambo Muzungu Jambo! Welcome English speaker Welcome! Or maybe it's 'Welcome white people welcome!' the children shriek waving wildly running to greet the truck, limbs flailing virtually doing jumping jacks in the air. Where do I begin to describe the exuberance, beauty and bounty of Uganda! A cornucopia of riches and delights from the Nubian beauty's of Jinja, the source of the river Nile, the jewel toned birds, a belly full of ground nut stew, 3 on the back of a motor bike at night down country roads, dust in my face, wind in my hair and reggae music blasting from every shabby roadside stand. Dare I say I'm home? The orphanage where I taught a class before they made me dance in the middle of their circle much to the delight and side splitting amusement ... read more

Hello, After a successful week in the Pader and Agago Districts distributing Sawyer water filters (http://www.sawyer.com/sawyersaves/), AFRIpads sanitation pads (http://afripads.com/) and Flip Flops with Hugh and Becky and their North Uganda Outreach Project (http://outreachuganda.blogspot.co.uk/) we were back in Gulu... Friday 14th June 2013 – Pader Town to Gulu continued The drive back from Pader Town to Gulu wasn’t too bad although the road had changed because of the rain... it wasn’t muddy but it was much bumpier; Drew was poorly but he somehow slept through most of the journey. We were driving along merrily until we saw a commotion ahead and thought there must be an accident. It turned out to be two lorries stu... read more

Hello all, So, we were back in Uganda and had driven from Kampala to Gulu where we spent a couple of nights recovering from the flight and stocking up on supplies. Now we were heading further north to Pader Town, where we’d be staying, and Agago District, where we’d be distributing the Sawyer water filters, AFRIpads re-usable sanitation pads and durable Flip-Flops. The Sawyer water filters (http://www.sawyer.com/sawyersaves/) are a fantastic innovation. In the UK, as in much of the developed world, we can access clean, safe and drinkable water at the turn of a tap and rarely need to be concerned about the source and reliability of the supply. In much of the developing world, Uganda included, it’s not so simple. As visitors to these countries we have to buy and drink bottled water and if ... read more

Bonjourno, OK, this is going to be a short one as it's just taken about 98% of my patence uploading the photos so I will let them do the story telling. Essentially we've made it into Uganda since last time narrowly avoiding some aggrovation with a very stern immigration officer. Since then we have been loving the country and, I'm aware I keep saying this, but the Ugandan people are so friendly it is almost unbelievable. We have seen the start of the dusty plains in the north, climbed up to the foothills Mt Elgon on the Kenyan border, explored the three waterfalls at Sipi and chilled in our hut with outrageous views, been to the source of the Nile and done a day white water rafting. We then, bruised and knackered, headed to the capital ... read more

2012 July 15 We started with breakfast at 7:00 immediately followed by a nature walk where we had a chance to see habituated chimps at the Budongo nature park. We walked for an hour and startled a group of black colobus monkeys in the tree tops, who took off flying up in the canopy. But, no chimps. We only had the nature walk option, as the official "chimp walk" is reserved for a maximum of 24 people per day, and our group could not be fitted in ... well ... we knew that when we left on safari ... but we were still hoping we might get lucky ... I guess the chimp walk will have to be another time. The walk lasted about 2 hours, where our guide identified several bird calls ... not being ... read more

Started the day early at 6:45 with breakfast followed by a long game drive through Murchison Falls NP where we got to see lots of animals and birds. No matter how many safaris I've been on, it's still quite wanderous to see all these various animals in the wild. We saw giraffe, water buck, Uganda's national symbols Ugandan Kob and crested cranes, along with elephants, buffalo, harte beest, baboons, vervet monkeys, hippos, wart hogs, and many many more including numerous birds, such as beeeaters, red bishops, and Abyssinian crested horn bills. After lunch, we took a launch to the Murchison Falls on the Victoria Nile. The boat trip was about 3 hours long, and we got to see Nile crocs, more hippos and many birds including African Fish Eagles. When the boat got to the falls, ... read more

Set out on a 3 day Safari centred around Murchison Falls in North Western Uganda. Our group of seven consisted of 3 English Uni students, 2 Austrians, an interesting Dane and myself. The Dane used to teach at Copenhagen U ... Turns out he's got a PhD in Pharmacology, a Masters in African Studies and a Bachelors in Health Services (?) And, he's a camera buff. The British Uni students were at Oxford and Birmingham studying math and chemistry (general science) and the third was just starting uni in September. Our first stop on the way to Murchison Falls NP was the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is. They have 70 square km of protected space where they started with 4 adult white Rhinos from Kenya. Later they got two more adults from Disney in the U.S. The ... read more

Top of Form Hello friends, Saturday 26th May – GULU and community outreach We had our second community outreach today, at a village called Pajule further out of Gulu. Hugh and Becky’s blog provides a brilliant overview and lots of valuable background information http://outreachuganda.blogspot.co.nz/. It was a couple of hours drive way and today we had another British person, Kate a doctor friend of George’s, coming with us. Drew and I were in the car with David (a colleague of George’s) and we headed out of Gulu on another bumpy track. We passed a School for War Affected Children and many previous IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps, strong reminders we were in an area country that until a few years ago was the LRAs territory. At the time there would have been rebel activity all around, ... read more

Hello all, We’d just say bye to KIHEFO (http://www.kihefo.org/) and were just saying hello to Hugh, Becky and George who we’d spend our next 2 weeks with. Drew met Hugh when he sat next to him on a flight; they’d both been on stag dos in Portugal. They got talking about the work Hugh (a pharmacist) and his girlfriend Becky (a nurse) have been doing in Uganda for years. Whilst in Uganda on volunteer placements they met and became friends with George, a Ugandan surgeon. The three of them started their own project to support people in the rural communities in Gulu, Northern Uganda and Hugh and Becky have been returning to the area every year for several years. They raise money and awareness in the UK and make any necessary arrangements for the project (for ... read more
