Despite being born and raised here, Hope and Irene had never been on safari. So I decided we needed a girls trip into the wild! We took a 3 day trip to my favorite park in Uganda: Murchison Falls. I switched it up this time and booked us on a small group tour. So there were two ladies who joined us from the UK. One is a doctor and the other a nurse, both volunteering for a month working in palliative care. The first day we went to see the Murchison Falls, or as the locals call them Kabalega Falls. They at the apex of Lake Albert and Victoria Nile and is the most powerful waterfall in the world. We hiked to view them from several vantage points including one where you get pretty wet from ... read more

FLIGHT The only good thing about 6am flights is that traffic on the M56 towards Manchester airport at around 3am is pretty much nonexistent. What with the lack of traffic and a taxi driver with a heavy foot I was there even before the gates had opened! Once on board my flight I found out that Brussels Airlines are tight buggers these days, only offering passengers with a connecting flight a soft drink, those only going as far as Brussels get sod all! Used to having a drink as soon as I was on board I instead spent my own money on a glass of Hoogarden at Brussels airport. Ah lekker! No complaints on the onward flight mind; the food was good, and the wine was very good. On arrival in Uganda getting a visa was ... read more

The rain seemed relentless; I’d finished my breakfast and I was staring out into the wet greenness of the bush around Lake Nkuruba, I’d had another poor night’s sleep in my hut where the blanket on my bed never ever felt completely dry. The company of my fellow guests was good and the friendly staff of the picturesque lodge and campsite prepared some surprisingly good food but I was sick of waking up with a runny nose and I was keen to go somewhere where I could escape this ever present dampness. One of the other guests, a young American guy had recently been working in Arua, and not unsurprisingly once he told me that the weather in that part of Uganda was completely different, I started hatching a plan to venture to the tempting heat ... read more

Today was a day for future planning, getting a workout in and making sure I didn’t forget I still had a job. We made run into town and I introduced Shelby to a Rolex which are DELICIOUS! I think I could make a million dollars selling these at bar close if I could master the recipe and process but I think it looks easier than it is. It was a great day to be. The sun was shining and the hotel we were staying at had a beautiful garden area with gazebos which made for a fantastic work space. That night we spent a good chunk of our evening chatting with Francis (one of the few Ugandans I have encountered who not only understood our sarcasm but dished it out) and Silvia who had become our ... read more

The day started out early to catch a bus to Masindi. Thanks to Norah’s walkthrough the previous day, it was smooth sailing to get tickets. We hung out for a bit and then a truck with two benches in the flatbed pull up. Shelby’s eyes almost popped out of her head with the look “are we riding in the back of this for 4 hours?” I shrugged with the “I don’t actually know but it is possible.” We got in and us trying to manage not getting our bags caught on the tarp covering the back broke the ice with the other passengers and a good laugh was had at the Muzungos getting stuck. They took us to the bus station and transferred us over to the main bus. Per usual, we did not pull out ... read more

APAC THE MOST MALARIAL TOWN ON THE PLANET. 2015 Hoima “You eat some, they are nice.” Rose the barmaid at The Setlight bar in the centre of Hoima town told me, of whatever some guy was hawking. He was walking around with a basket containing small parcels of wrapped up banana leafs and elaborately tied shut with a thin leafy grass-like twine. I bought one of the parcels for Rose and her friend for 2,000 Uganda shillings, only to find on opening the bundle of leaves that it contained white ants! What’s more the poor little buggers were still alive, just covered in a fine sprinkling of salt. Rose’s English was really quite limited which probably didn’t help me when I tried to explain the finer points of vegetarianism. Rose’s friend was pretty keen for me ... read more

Early morning start for another safari. The earlier you start, the greater the chances are of seeing lions coming back from their nightly hunts, and the rest of the animals grazing for food before heading for shelter to avoid the midday sun. The camp was buzzing with activity, and for most people, this was their very first safari. It's always fun to watch people get so excited for their first time doing something incredible: a safari, Machu Picchu, first time to Europe, the list goes on. To get to the park, you have to cross the river via ferry. Everyone was trying to reach the ferry first, so that you could board it first, therefore allowing you access to the park before all the other cars crossed over. It also takes a bit of time for ... read more

Another long drive ahead of us. Today's drive would take about seven hours under ideal conditions, but with the rains, dirt roads and other factors, it took about ten. If there's one thing I've learned about traveling in Africa, it is that if you don't have either a 4WD, a mule, or two good feet, you aren't going to get very far. One road had been washed out due to the heavy rains. The water was deep and swift as we drove thru it; you could literally feel the water push the car to the side as we drove thru it. 4WD's are amazing. About 15 minutes later, another stretch of the road was completely gone. We had to sit and wait for over one hour while they remade the road by bringing in dirt to ... read more

The next stop would be Murchison Falls, in Northern Uganda. It takes forever and a day to get anywhere in this country, thanks to some of the poorest roads I've ever seen (next to Saskatoon's, of course), so we would spend the night at the halfway point in Fort Portal. The following morning we would drive a few more hours to make it to Murchison in time for lunch with another boat cruise, this time on the Nile River, in the afternoon. Now, while Murchison is a beautiful part of the country, it is also home to the tsetse fly which carries the potentially deadly parasite that causes African Sleeping Sickness in humans. They look almost exactly like a typical house fly, but have a nasty bite like a horse fly, which injects the parasite into ... read more
