It is difficult to comprehend that thirty-five thousand chidren have been abducted in the past 20 years in Northern Uganda. The United Nations has described Northern Uganda as the most dangerous place in the wrold for children to live and one of the worlds most unattended emergencies. Amazing, isnt it thát we know so little about this horrendous situation. The children have been abducted by the Lords Resistance Army, LRA who have been at war with the Ugandan Army for the last 2 decades. Joseph Kony is the leader of the LRA and a witchdoctor who uses demonic tactics to ensure that these children remain in his power. Abducted children are forced to participate in the killing of other children - or to be killed themsevles. The children are trained to raid villages for food, destory ... read more

It may not be everyone's idea of fun, but my birthday this year was perfect ... for me! We had asked at the taxi park the previous day about the frequency of minibuses to get to Budong Central Forest Reserve as we wanted to walk 'The Royal Mile' (which is supposed to be excellent bird watching). Why did we believe people who were keen not to disappoint? In the end, having explored different options, and after some hard bargaining by me (I haggled to reduce the price by 1000 shillings each - a total saving of a US dollar), we hired two boda-boda motorcyle taxis. The drivers assured us that they knew the place. The ride, itself, was fun, apart from the clinging red dust thrown up by the dirt road passing through huge sugarcane plantations. ... read more

En route from Burundi, we stopped for one night in Kigali. The following morning was when I went to the Memorial Centre and then had lunch alone, feeling like chopped liver (New York slang). We then arranged a lift back to Kabale, in Uganda, with Milton, who delivers Ugandan newspapers to Kigali daily. For an additional fee, he took us straight to the Overland Camp at Lake Bunyoni. A gorgeous place! The safari tent rooms are erected on wooden platforms with stunning views over the lake. We walked to the local school and 'commune' where travellers volunteer through the House of Edirisa in Kabale. The school was impressive for the painted wall charts on the outside walls - I have seen this in many countries where there are few resources, but this is the first time ... read more

All is good here, we spent last week planning for our trip up to Murchison Falls National Park and got up at 3am on Friday to leave (naturally I hadn't packed and had decided to go out the night before which made for a fun morning!). Us 4 volunteers, me, Micheala, Rachael and Adam went along with Benji and his friend Ema who drove. Took us 7 hours to get up there, including 3 on unsurfaced roads which wasn't much fun, and too many loo trips in the bush!! As soon as we arrived we headed off on a game drive, as soon as we left the camp site we saw baboons and hippos as we on the ferry crossing the nile - we had hired a 4x4 people carrier type car for the weekend and ... read more

In October 2008 I had an opportunity to visit Uganda, primarily as part of an Engineering Ministries International team to learn about construction management in East Africa. My previous blog is an account of the work of this team. Before returning to the States, I joined two others for a three day safari of Murchison Falls NP. Wednesday, 15 October 2008, three of the EMI team, John J., John W, and me (my first name is also John, but to avoid further confusion I went by my middle name Robert, or Bob) went on safari. After breakfast at the guest house in Kampala, we loaded up the Land Cruiser for the drive north to Murchison Falls. Fortunately, most of the road was paved, although a stretch south of Masindi was still under construction; an aid project ... read more

We sit in a bus from Kampala bound for Masindi in North Uganda, but this bus is not moving. Oh no, quite the opposite - the bus is actually stuck in deep mud on some dirt road in the middle of nowhere, and it has been stuck for about an hour. A flash storm sends sheets of rain our way as Uganda does during its wet season. The aisles are filled with produce, boxes, and people, and the floor of the bus, now Lake Crisco, is covered in oil leaking from one of said boxes. A baby cries and people shout. The Israeli couple we are traveling with sits a row in front of me, moans, and whines. The Canadian couple we are traveling with sits a row behind me, puts their faces in their hands, ... read more

After our eleven hours in London the group of us headed off to our true destination Arua, Uganda. After a few hours on the plane we landed in AFRICA!! We grabbed our bags and met up with the family we would be spending our time with. John and Erica have been living here in Uganda for quite some time now. They picked us up in a big old van and we all loaded ourselves into it. Our first stop before our voyage could really take off was to stop at the "mall" and grab some food. The "mall" was really just a food store, but what I was really focused on where the awesome birds flying all around us. There were quite a few Marabou Storks hanging out all over the place and my main mission ... read more

After a bunch of discussions on what to do with three unexpected weeks in Uganda, we decided to take three day tour up to Murchison Falls National Park in the north of Uganda. The budget options were (1) completely booked and (2) didn’t include chimpanzee tracking, which is one of the reasons we decided to go to this area. We got an independent guide’s name and decided to give it a try. While it was definitely more expensive, it turned out to be worth every penny. We had a personal driver who was able to stop where and when we wanted, and our accommodations were fantastic. We stayed in Budongo National Forest at their new ecotourism lodge. It is amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone going in that direction. The rooms were beautiful wood lodges ... read more

well i'm up north right now - we leave tomarrow morning. it's been pretty intense. traveling to different ngo's in the region and visiting villages and sites that were internally displaced people's camps before. there was talk of the lra being 6 km from the northern border of uganda (in sudan) and someone just told me that they heard that they have entered uganda. the people we talked to we super scared that they were coming back. all of the places i visited personally were camps in the past - in two out of three there were offical massacres, and in one the lra burned half of the camp. there is some speculatiobn that it might not have been the lra and it might have been the ugganda people's defense force (updf) - in one place ... read more

hey all. we just got back from our first safari in northern uganada. the park was called murchison falls national park. there were sooo many animals! it was amazing to see them all sooooo close. however on the way there we had a lot of problems that eventually put us almost 48 hours behind schedule. our roof rack fell apart and had to be fixed then we blew a tire then we blew a shock then we went in the wrong direction for 70 km. so it was a nightmare getting there but was all worth it in the end. heres a list of the animals we got to see on the game drives: -baboons -elephants -lions -hippos -crocodiles -water buffalo -warthog -monkeys -lots of birds of all shapes and sizes -mongoose -giraffes -lots of deer-like ... read more
