This week has been wonderful, but crazily busy. The World Cup, of course, is in full swing, and so that is exciting. Every time an African team plays you can hear the sound of the vuvuzelas from TVs and radios. Sometimes, people are spilling out of tiny shops that have tvs and I can't imagine that all of them can see well enough to tell what is going on. I went to see the first match, which was between South Africa and Mexico, at a bar. There was a funny Ethiopian who sat next to me, and as he got drunker and drunker he got more and more excited until he was jumping up and down by himself when South Africa shot wide. He realized after about 20 seconds of celebration that the goal hadn't counted ... read more

CWB UgandaCrew Arrive Safely Friday 26 February It was an early start for us all, meeting at Heathrow Terminal 5 by 8 am. Having everyone assembled on time was a good start and we worked on checking-in luggage which included excess, that BA were good enough not to charge for, with kit bags and t-shirts being taken out to leave for the children in Uganda. We were all very pleased with the number of spare seats on our 8 ½ hour flight out to Entebbe and managed to stretch out. After arriving in Uganda stepping off the plane at 10.30 to balmy night temperatures felt rather unusual after such a long UK winter. We queued for visas and collected our luggage before being met by John and William, representatives of the Uganda Cricket Association who ... read more

This is all a bit rushed, I really have a lot of time so I should write something. But I am paying by the minute to be here and its grating on my conscious at 1.5 KSH a minute. Ill keep this short. Rural Uganda was pretty basic. They seem to have one main road that is tar sealed then anything off that road seems to have a high likelihood of chance of being dirt, in and about Entebbe anyway, which is where this is. It was good to see what the local life is like in a small town outside of a city. Its very dirty, and quite chaotic. Hopefully the picture will say more.... read more

This is called Ajona, and yes it does taste as bad as it looks. It was quite an experience though, too end the day and head off into the local township or village and basically sit around and drink (very sour) beer with the locals. I bought a straw and had more than one sip, maybe ten in all? It was interesting, its served warm as they continually add more hot water and mix as the night goes on. It was funny as when I came they were on a small bucket, then they changed to a medium bucket, and by the end of the night we were on a BIG bucket. the straws are hollowed out sticks, with filters at the end in the diarrhea mix. Not sure what the filter was made of but ... read more

A quick bit of backtracked and filled in writing. Thus I am writing this from 4 days in the future, or about events 4 days in the past. Whatever view tickles your fancy. Well I had a great end to my horrible airport stay. Business class upgrade, so good, the perks, bring them on. For dinner we were served some kind of salmon and cream cheese starter followed by pan seared springbok medallions, closed by a date pudding. its strange airplane food that actually tastes good. Anyway, one thing to note about Uganda as far as initial observations go, its so much greener than the other parts of Africa I had seen till now (that really just being Zimbabwe and Johannesburg). And, Lake Victoria, it's massive! It disappears into the horizon at some places... maybe a ... read more

We got up this morning and did our laundry- African style. This mean a bucket of soapy water for scrubby clothes and a bucket of clean rinse water, and they hanging them out on the line to dry. It actually wasn’t too bad! Later, Sarah and I parted from the rest of the group as Jordan took us into town to meet up with Joshua. From the Shell station, he found us a taxi that would take us to Entebbe to see the new school. The African Children’s Choir has a school in Kampala for all the former Choir kids, but unfortunately there is not enough room for all of them anymore. So ACC bought 15 acres or so on Lake Victoria to build a brand new compound, complete with dormitories, schoolrooms, a large kitchen and ... read more

We leave Kenya and head north into Uganda. We pass straight through the capital, Kampala, and head to Entebbe, on the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest body of water. Heading out onto the lake is just like being at sea - there’s no chance of seeing the distant shore, and it takes us over an hour to reach Ngamba Island, just a short distance from Entebbe, where we visit the chimpanzee sanctuary. As everyone is building up to the gorilla trek in a few days time, the chimps are seen as a practice run, but they’re obviously entirely different creatures and the experience turns out to be very different. We view the chimps from a high platform behind a wire fence, as the keepers lure them out of the untamed forest to feed. Comedy noises ... read more

Friday 20th March We arrived at Banana Village where we had planned to meet the CRU dental team at around 4pm after our 32 hours bus journey across what seemed like the whole of Africa but in actual fact was only three countries! We looked a little dishevelled and slightly dirty to say the least and had hoped that we could have a shower before meeting everyone. Sadly Barbara caught us sneaking to our room and so they would have to put up with our dust covered faces and the slight stench of “African travel”! There were seven of us on the team including Lucie and myself. Paul and Aliya were both fully qualified dentists, Paul from Ireland and Aliya from London who was half Pakistani, half South American and had red hair! Michelle was the ... read more

Greetings from Africa! I am alive and safe and enjoying Uganda! It has been a busy couple of weeks and I am now beginning to settle in and get used to life out here. The day that I arrived I was met by a guy called Isaac who is the education officer for CSWCT (Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust - the NGO I’m working for) who was very friendly and introduced me to Africa. We drove in his battered old pick up down the red dusty streets to where I was to stay for the evening. The next day I went to CSWCT head office to talk through what I would be doing and to make arrangements for traveling to Ngamba Island - the chimp sanctuary owned by CSWCT. At the office I met all ... read more
