Episode 4: Goodbye Tanzania, hello Uganda July 15, 2014. Woke up this morning with a cold unfeeling reptilian eyeball staring back at me. No, it was not Ross, but a large brown gecko on my pillow. It promptly launched itself onto the wall and disappeared through a crevice. We are safe and well and are currently in Uganda. Our last few days in Tanzania were spent at Arusha National Park, where the aim was to see the beautiful black and white colobus monkeys and pink flamingos. We did a short tour with a great safari company called Wayo Africa. Arusha National park is largely cool and moist rainforest, with imposing Mt. Meru at its centre, quite unlike the other dry and hot Tanzanian parks such as the Serengeti. We again had an excellent guide, this time ... read more

And the journey begins again...... New blog to keep things fresh..... Travel is one of those things that is deep within me. It always changes my outlook, makes me appreciate the little things, gives me a fresh look on life and allows time for self-introspection. It has taught me so much about who I am, what I want and who I want to be. Each destination and leg of my journeys has taught me something new. Morocco in 2004 taught me to appreciate the little things when I ventured up to the Atlas Mountains and saw entire communities that lived in caves. 2011 when I had a trip planned for Europe (Italy, Switerland, and Croatia) and my father randomly passed away taught me that life is short and make every moment count. Do what you want ... read more

We have done a few flights but we still had time to explore more of Entebbe. I went sailing with Alec on Vic Lake and we saw a Spotted Neck Otter passing by us in the water. On the doc locals brought their goats to take them to an island where they farm. Another day Jaco and I went exploring and we found a kind of a harbor. Later we went to Aero Beach where we descovered one of the Boeing 707's that was used in the Raid on Entebbe - to rescue the Air France passengers that was hijacked by terrorists in 1976 and was given permission to land at Entebbe by Idi Amin. From the road leading to Aero Beach I managed to get a photo of the UN aircrafts and ours too...indicated by ... read more

Today I left Uganda to fly to South Africa. Yesterday, i traveled from Red Chili to Entebbe Backpackers! which was ok, very small, but still very cheap! after ordering my food, I waited 2 hours for it.....the Kitchen was tiny, with just a double ring cooker, to cook food for all 15 residents...! The next day i had to be up at 4 30, to make it to the airport to check in at 5, it was a 5 minute drive to the airport! after checking in, waited for the flight! having had very little sleep the previous night i tried to spend as much of the wait, and the flight, asleep! Once the plan landed, i went through customs, collected my bag, and tried to find my way to the train station, where i was ... read more

I saw the chimps today on Ngamba Island and it was awesome!!! The tour company found three more people so it cost 25% of what I expected. We took a speed boat to the island - a very nice 50 minute trip on Lake Victoria. The island had lots and lots of birds - ibises, egrets, lapwings, and beautiful orange weavers. There were also many monitor lizards wandering around. We had tea and then a 30 minute talk on chimps. By the end, we could hear them yelling for their lunch! They are free in the forest, but come to the compound four times a day to be fed. There were soooo many of them (over 40)! At lunch they get avacados and vegetables. The keeprs thrown the food over the fence and then chaos ensures. ... read more

Sad to leave. Excited to go. Highlights today are: 1) Early breakfast and more good-byes; 2) Uganda border; 3) Driver Ben brought us to the Botanical Garden at Entebbe; 4) Waiting at Entebbe; 5) Headed Home. NARRATIVE: 5:30am. Up and at 'em. Showers then breakfast. Dustin arrived right on time. It has been so peaceful riding with him, listening to music, venturing into conversation with exaggerated hand gestures and little common language. Edina and her staff insisted on carrying our luggage. All circled around us and said goodbye. Drove away from the red dust streets, the shops, the city compost pile, our colleagues, our friends - Bye Kayanga. Arrived at Mutukula at 9:00am. Breezed through the offices shrugging off those cutting in line until Steve decided he had had enough. One guy stepped in front of ... read more

I'll start with a brief about my Friday. I woke up early expecting to have a session in the morning. If I had one then I would need to leave my place around 9am. I decided to wake up at 8am and send some texts. I didn't get any replies so around 8:45 I decided to take a shower. Since I still heard nothing I figured I would just wait. Finally around 9:15 I got a reply from May (the leader) saying that she wants to have a meeting at MUBS about the swITch project. Since I was already awake I just got some breakfast and then headed to the university. I spent some time on the internet and around noon Roy showed up. We then sat there waiting for May. It's wasn't until about 1:45pm ... read more
