On Wednesday 21stMarch we were picked up at Msalato along with Alex, Pam & Matika, by World Vision and driven to the Farkwa Province to meet a child Matika had been sponsoring, Yudith. We travelled from Dodoma to Farkwa along a bumpy dirt road to the World Vision HQ office where we were met by the team, provided with some great food and drinks before heading to Yudith’s school. At Yudith’s school we were greeted by children coming out of the class rooms, they were so excited to see visitors and the children just wanted to hold your hand and smile and laugh at the Wazungu (white people). We were introduced to Yudith and the headmaster and then taken to her class room. Alex who speaks good Swahili took over the class for a while teaching ... read more

After our visit with Yudith and her family we were taken to a second primary school where again we were met by the children, all who were very excited to see people visiting them. Then it was off to see the hospital that is helping with maternal and infant/child health. Last stop was a high school that has new student boarding accommodation funded by World Vision. Our last stop was the World Vision HQ for lunch and farewells and we were all presented with a “Khanga” or material that is used for traditional dress. Then back along the bumpy road to Msalato where we said goodbye to our World Vision hosts.... read more

After a long day with World Vision we had an early start, 7.30am, heading to Manyoni in the Rift Valley. The day had been organised by Ernest. We set off once again in Jo’s Land Cruiser, Alex driving, Ernest as navigator, Pam, Lynne & Ester in the back seat and the “kids” Evelyn, Jess and Matika in the back on bench seats, with the spare tyre. The drive from Dodoma to Manyoni is about 125klm and takes approx 90 minutes on good roads so the trip was ok. When we arrived at Manyoni Ernest directed us to the Cathedral, a large impressive stone building built with the help of money from Germany & Liverpool in the UK. We were met at the Cathedral by the church ‘Warden’s & Vestry’ (our apologies for not remembering names but ... read more

We left Manyoni and headed towards Kilimatinde some 20klm away, our first stop was Ernest & Esters house, they are building it themselves after being allocated a plot of land. The house is still a shell after 5 years as you need to save up to buy a bag of cement or some bricks as you go, this is the way things are built in Tanzania. Ernest and Ester were very proud of their house and you could see the excitement in their eyes as they explained how it would look when finished. Our next stop was St John’s Bible School where Ernest had been principal for some years prior to starting his studies at Msalato. We were shown around the grounds of the school and taken to the lookout that gave a magnificent view of ... read more

On Saturday 24thMarch Alex borrowed Jo’s Land Cruiser and along with Pam & Matika we headed off to pick up John and Vera, friends of Alex & Pams. It’s about an hour and half drive through Dodoma on a road that took us through the hills to the south east. Recent rain had provided the road with the usual corrugations and pot holes which made it a bit uncomfortable for those in the back. We drove toward Mvumi Mission where the hospital is, the hospital where Matika was born. We were also on our way to visit Dora Ntandu who had been Alex’s secretary many years ago and now lives with her family and works as secretary to the Clinical Officers Training school, at Mvumi hospital. Eventually we arrived at Dora’s home and we were welcome ... read more

WOW we had a fantastic life changing time at Msalato. God blessed us by fitting in so much in this short space of time. He has given us a taste of what Tanzania has to offer and what Msalato Theological College is doing in his name. We have met so many people seen so many places and experienced so many new things. We know in our hearts that we will return to Tanzania very soon. We thank God for the opportunity to share this experience with Alex, Pam & Matika. For the opportunity to meet Lynne Clarke once again and to meet Ernest, Ester, Gloria & Donald. We are also thankful for the opportunity to live among the staff and students of Msalato, even for this short time. But now on Sunday 25th March after a ... read more

New Blog Feature Student Stories We will try to highlight a student with his or her story in each new blog entry. In this July blog we are featuring Peter Fumbi. We have spoken of Peter in past blogs, but this is his story in his words. We hope you enjoy this new feature. KING’S FRIEND GROUP My name is Peter Fumbi a theologian student at Msalato Theology College and the leader of the King’s Friend Group which helps street children to move from out of the street. Hello everyone, greetings from our home here in Msalato, Tanzania during this wonderfully warm winter we’re enjoying. Summary We have just completed our first school year here at Msalato Theological College and it has been an eventful year, full of many new experiences, a huge learning curve and a very busy schedule. But most of all it has been a wonderful blessing for both of us to be able to serve in this community. We have received so much more than we could possibly give. We are continuing to feel more comfortable in this environment and are enjoying the rewards of our work. Currently, we are working on some small projects around the college. We would like to thank all of you who have supported our mission. Without your generous donations, we could not have done ... read more

The following is a blog I wrote for publishment on the Wildlife Connection organization website. I can't think of a good title for it, so Teaching Blog is what I came up with. Enjoy reading I grew up thinking I wanted to be a veterinarian, and in some respects, I still do. But then after I turned 21, a small voice in my head started whispering, “what about teaching?” Teaching? What about teaching!? There is no way I would be good at that; I suck at talking in front of large groups of people! Still, that thought stuck with me through the end of college, although I didn’t change my major to fit this new interest. I figured I would never get a job in it since I had no experience, and settled in working as ... read more

Safari Hi everyone. It is now the 14th of April and Jeannie and I have just returned after a two week Easter Break where we spent one day flying to Ruaha National Park and one week driving through northern Tanzania visiting Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Mt. Kilimanjaro in Moshi. We travelled with two other expats from Dodoma and although a little tiring from all the driving on some very rough roads the trip was wonderful. It is amazing how our little Rav4 is holding up on these rough African roads. Before we set out by car, our first trip was by air in a 6-seater Cessna with our friend Andrew from MAF at the helm, to Ruaha National Reserve for a one-day safari to see the magnificent countryside from a different perspective and to ... read more
