I had a really great 4th of July (although I always do really). This year and last year were particularly great. Last year, I spent my birthday with a good friend, watching multiple firework shows in L-town from the top of Columbine Memorial. And this year, well I spent it in TZ. How could it get any better!? I spent my birthday in Chogela camp, the tourist camp that we stay at. All of us from the project were there, along with all my friends who work there, and my friend Steph, a peace corps volunteer who lives in a neighboring village The all gave me birthday cards written in Swahili!. The night was even complete with American flags! One of the volunteers brought several of the really small ones from home. It was so great. ... read more

Another volunteer, Helen and I set up a great “explore the forest” lesson with students from one of the villages in Pawaga region who can’t afford to go to school. I came up with the idea because Helen and I went to a section of the forested area on our own that had not been totally cleared (it’s disappearing fast) to find some tree seeds for the nursery that may be set up here. Our trip, and us discovering this forest, inspired me to take these students/peers (they are between 18-20) out to this forest to have an active environmental education lesson on forest ecology. We wanted to teach and demonstrate the importance of forests and the problems that result from deforestation (locally and globally). This particular forest was really good to demonstrate with because it ... read more

The following is a blog I wrote for publishment on the Wildlife Connection organization website. I can't think of a good title for it, so Teaching Blog is what I came up with. Enjoy reading I grew up thinking I wanted to be a veterinarian, and in some respects, I still do. But then after I turned 21, a small voice in my head started whispering, “what about teaching?” Teaching? What about teaching!? There is no way I would be good at that; I suck at talking in front of large groups of people! Still, that thought stuck with me through the end of college, although I didn’t change my major to fit this new interest. I figured I would never get a job in it since I had no experience, and settled in working as ... read more

Hello everyone. I a so sorry that I have virtualy neglected facebook and the blog this time around. I am much busier than lat time and not only that, the project is much different than last time as well. Unfortunately, since I have been so busy, I have not sat down and journaled very day like I wanted to. The handy journal I brought along with me has turned into: Swahili/English dictionary, a book of random to do lists/notes and a book of schedules. This makes me sad because I already can not remember the details of everyday. It has been such a blur. Life is such I guess. So to bring everyone up to speed: This project stated out as an elephant study. We were tracking them, taking data on elephant raids, movements, etc. It evolved ... read more

I will keep this brief as it is difficult to type on an iPad. What a rush thisweekends has been. I have never hadw such long flights or layovers before, but it turned out to not be bad at all! I was picked up at the airport by two really nice Indian fellas. One by the names of pitamber, whom I met via couch surfing and his friend Rajesh. Rajesh is a pharmacist an. Pitamber is a traveling marketer. We drove through the crazy traffic of Dar Es salaam into morogoro (a 3 hour drive). The drive was fun, complete with conversation of India vs us customs, Swahili lessons, african music ands tusker, the local beer in tz. We will camp out here tomight and Continue On to Iringatomorrow. The hotel we are in is freaking ... read more

I put in the so many bana trees quote because that is what Nesta always says when the two two of us walk into Masele's farm. There really is...so many banan trees. bUt i just love how she says it with her African accent. I spent the last week at Pawaga camp (sadly it was my last...but more on that later). On our way up to Pawaga camp from Iringa, we passed through Ilolo Mpya village, where apparently they were having their monthly 'free market' . Which means anyone can sell anything there. It was huge!! We stopped and took a look around. You could find ANYTHING there, but what stood out most in my mind were the Obama shirts. We saw a couple of kids wearing them. I have been meaning to write about the ... read more

Earlier today, i walked through the market (soko). Now I have done this many times before, however, I walked around the entire market this time, instead of just a small part of it. I originally went to find sunglasses (the one item of mine that managed to not survive East Africa) and I quickly found those, and just decided to keep walking. I may have described the market before, but in case I have not, I will again. You can find ANYTHING you need there, and its all open air. Food (vegetables and fruit mainly) are laid out on blankets on the sidewalk, stacked in buckets or in the case of rice and bean products, found in HUGE mounds in the main food market. All the food is local and fresh, and I catch whifs of ... read more

I have spent many facebook and blog posts describing the beauty that I am seeing all around me. However, I don't want to ignore the fact that TZ has its poverty problems as well. And I want to try to paint an accurate portrait of the area I am in. The media in America makes Africa out to be this wasteland of starving children and unsafe environments. It's really not. Once you get the hang of swahili, and accepting that kids will stare at you for being a mzungu sometimes (haha) its really not that different from home. I do not know enough about this region to know who is 'poor' and who is not. I see many kids without shoes on, but at the same time, I see many kids with shoes on. All the ... read more

Chizi Kamandizi means crazy like a banana in swahili. I chose to name this blog that because its just going to be a smattering of completely random things that happened this week, as I am NOT going to sit here for 2 hours again and write (Sorry...haha). I have spent the past week in Chogela camp. It was founded by a man with the last name Chogela, and I have had the priveledge to meet this man. He is a rastafarian lookin dude who is fluent and english and extremely nice. He has 2 employees that run the camp with him and they are super nice as well. One of them kicked my butt in football (soccer to the americans). one of them also builds a fire for us mzungus every night. its fantastic. This camp ... read more

Oh my, I realized I forgot to write about alot. Although that is good because I just finished eating, (this internet cafe is actually a cafe too...i'll explain more in a sec.) Kylie has more work to do for her project so I will just hang out in here until she is done. I am at a place called Neema Crafts in Iringa. It's a community project, started by a mzungo who runs it. THe computers in here are all state of the art and completely virus free. THe food is fantastic. I had fruit juice, 2 vegetable samosas (which are MUCH better here than in the states...) a dish I have not tried before called ugali (basically just grits..) with beans and cabbage. IT was a nice change from the bland diet we have at ... read more
