We made it to S. Africa and boy did we have a blast in the Hluhluwe Imfalozi Game Reserve. We saw 3 of the Big 5 within 5 minutes of entering the park. Those are the Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant. Saw tons of animals but no cats. We're waiting to see those in Chobe, I guess. We did see 3 African Wild Dogs -- twice. That is a very rare sight as there are only 35 in the park and 500 in all of S. Africa. The lodge we stayed at was very nice with "over-the-top" quality food. Brady stuck to pasta for pretty much the entire time. In addition to the animals listed above, we saw tons of birds and many different kinds of antelope, zebras, giraffe, warthog, crocs, monkeys, baboons. They were all extremely ... read more

.....and there is our time in South Africa. The Rainbow Nation has fabulous and varied scenery, but is tainted by a crime wave and a people seemingly divided as they ever were! We enjoyed ourselves for about 75% of the time, but would be unsure about ever coming back until they sort out the personal security issues. When visiting countries, we often ask ourselves could we imagine living here? The answer in this case is simple - NO!! In the words that some readers of this blog will be familiar, "we don't live like these people" - behind bars, razor wire and electric fences rarely venturiung out after dark. We survived for 12 weeks with one close call on the mugging front in JBay and two hostel break-ins while we slept, but that is no consolation ... read more

Sorry the late listing. I have had no access to the net and in fact I am not even sure if this listing will show as the net access I am using is some old-fashion thing called "dilup" apparently! Anyway, I flew rather uneventfully home with my recently injured (possibly broken metatarsal) foot and passed through Joburg in my shortest ever visit to South Africa. One thing worth of note is that Joburg International has, as well as the normal international duty-free and obligatory African curio shops, a small place (turn left after passport control) where you can get a 20 or 30-minute chair massage! I highly recommend this as a way to kill half an hour and prepare for your long haul flight back to London! (Just dont trust the women who work there to ... read more

Leaving Home 21st July Great news - we managed to complete and exchange on our flat at 15:15 on the day we flew out! Nothing like cutting it fine. We spent the entire trip around the M25 on the way to the airport canceling all the bills. We’re now officially homeless. Arrival in SA Saturday 22nd July Andrew and the kids were waiting for us at Johannesburg International after a relatively uneventful flight. We took off a little late and shortly thereafter a fire alarm in one of the toilets started up and didn’t stop until 6:00am, fortunately we were on the upper deck (which has a whole 3 inches of extra leg room - woo hoo!) so could only hear it faintly. The cabin crew tried everything to turn it off, including shutting down the ... read more

Its been quite a crazy and busy past month or so, so I apologize that I haven’t updated this in a while, but frankly, I had better things to be doing! Mid-June kicked it all off, with my parents and sister arriving and meeting me at the Durban airport. It was so awesome to see them, and such a mind trip as well, having part of my life in the states visiting me over here. It was also my first time as tour guide of durban, for which I was terribly underqualified, but luckily my parents couldn’t really tell that I was leading them in circles half the time. Experience is quite the teacher however, and I’ve now mastered the streets of Durban like no other. (Yet another in the inexhaustable list of reasons why the ... read more

We've opted to view Joburg from a safe distance - approximately 50kms away to be precise from Pretoria. After 11 weeks of listening to horror stories about Joburg and it's crime, we opted for the comparative serenity of Pretoria and it's tree lined avenues and embassies. We are based in Hatfield, which is next to the University and very convenient for the bars and shops. We teamed up with a few other people from the hostel and had an exploration of the area around the Parliament - the extensive Union Buildings, which stand impressively on a hill overlooking the city - and some of downtown. We also found a 2010 World Cup stadium that is not a figment of a planner's imagination - The Loftus Versfeld, home of the Blue Bulls rugby team. Soweto (or to ... read more

Cape Agulhas - the ends of the earth ! Or, perhaps, the most Southern Point in Africa - and where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Bump down a dusty track to a sign which proclaims in large letters the offical point where the hydrologists decided is the official point where the oceans meet. I suspect that the point is entirely arbitrary - but don't tell the hydrologists or I'll get angry letters. There's not much to see from there but endless sea - but the crashing waves are dramatic and there's something erie about the whole area. We decided to challenge our car, and took it up a fairly off road trail to look at the pensinsula from on high. You can see a shot of our car here - it's a brand ... read more

7/16/06 This week has been a great encouragement. We were able to have so many opportunities to spread the Word and plant seeds. On Thursday we were able to see Andreas again and he was sober. When we went to visit him he was working and was not able to talk but we invited him to our Thursday bible study and he said that he would come. Typically when they say that they are going to come they are just telling you what you want to hear. At bible study he came and Maeshach was there also. Andreas was intensely interested and asked questions. I believe that God truly did a work in this mans heart and it brought tears to my eyes. Meh brought a stuffed bear and a car for Ashley (Andreas’ son) ... read more

The title pretty much sums up our animal experiences in our second trip to Kruger. Our own excursions into the Park were based near one of the southern camps around Skukuza and this time with the professional, we were further north near Orphen. Whilst we had the advantage of an open game viewer rather than a Renault Clio, if the animals aren't nearby you are going to see them....and most of the big cats remained as elusive as a South African policeman when you need one. There are therefore no lion piccies to add to this page, the leopards were probably hiding up a tree laughing as we went past and the only major sighting success was a very distant cheetah. The elephants were in abundance, as were the giraffes, zebras, wilderbeest and the ever present ... read more
