As I am too full of delicious meats to think, this shall be brief. Today (Nay, the last 3-4 days) have been too overwhelming to really talk about. In all honesty, my mind can no longer process quickly enough to allow me to relate what we've done. Let me give you a quick run-down. In the beginning, we were in Capetown. We went up Table Mountain, a tremendous plateau in the shadow of which Capetown exists. From its summit you can see ocean in over 180 degrees. It's a natural monument beyond compare and... As you can see, I can't relate the experience. Next we went to Robben Island which is an experience I think everyone should have, if only to come face to face with what unbridled prejudice can do. Finally, we toured the townships, ... read more

Today was a really fun and active day in contrast to the lazy day I spent yesterday tasting wine. Woke up at 6am to have and early breakfast at the backpacker's that we were staying at. Left our little town of Swellendam by 7:30 and headed towards towards the coastal town of Knysna (pronounced nize-na . Heading out of Swellendam, the fog was pretty thick creating a really beautiful effect as we drove through flat grassy green expanses of land with mountains in the background. Pillows of fog sank really low so it looked it the mountains were rising out of the clouds. We made Jen (scenic papparazzi) in charge of identifying photo ops and making Erika pull over so we could take pictures. The fog lifted later in the day and you could see heards ... read more

Getting ourselves back to Durban and the East Coast meant that we were able to hook up again with The Baz Bus for the final few legs of our ticket between Capetown to Swaziland. It was only a short trip to our next destination, Gingindlovu, but one in which we spent more time than the actual journey waiting for Bazza to turn up and then more time again for a breakfast stop. Inyezane BP was a place that Dani was keen to visit as on previous trip to S.A. six years ago she had stayed at this newly opened spot and loved it. Dani had described Inyezane to me as a workshop come campsite run by an eccentric, mad scientist, budding artist Saffa and his new and equally eccentric French wife who had ridden in on ... read more

Soweto. The name conjures up a myriad of images and thoughts: the long dusty road along which the schoolchildren marched in 1976 to protest against the use of Afrikaans as the medium for their education; the "black hole" of Johannesburg (forgive the expression) to which the Blacks were forcibly removed from as early as 1904 and where Whites feared (and perhaps some still fear) to venture; endless "matchbox" houses and squatter camps; the birthplace of the New South Africa; the home of Nelson Mandela and Bishop Tutu, shebeens and high crime rates... I could go on and each of us will have their own images. I had wondered about the ethics (if that’s not too strong a word) of going on a tour of Soweto. It seemed voyeuristic, gazing into the lives of ordinary people much ... read more

I arrived in Capetown earlier this morning safe and on time and very tired from the 30+ hours that I spent traveling to and from airports, waiting at the airport, and flying. It was raining and kind of chilly when I arrived, so I'm very glad that I brought my fleece. I was greeted at the airport by Lucinda. She runs a hostel, or backpacker as they call them here. I'm in the village of Kommetjie, 40 minutes from CapeTown, located somewhere along the peninsula although I haven't had a chance to look at my exact location on a map. I think the southwesternmost tip of Africa (Cape Point, or Cape of Good Hope)is very close by. On the drive to Kommetjie from the airport, it was dark so I wasn't able to see, but I ... read more

We were quite scared of Jo'burg, so landed, collected our hire car and pretty much bypassed the city, stopping only for a tour of Soweto. This was very good, if somewhat intrusive, but we got to see the township - from its millionaires row with Winnie Mandela's 24 room house with pool to the poorer areas where they had only recently had water provided. From Jo'burg we drove across to Kruger National Park, enjoying the scenary as we went. Really good views across the landscape - better in the morning as it was burning season so in the afternoons the valleys tended to fill up with haze. The animals in Kruger gave a fabulous performance, which we watched from our car. A herd of elephants crossed the road just infront of us soon after we entered the ... read more

Despite the recent concerns expressed to us by our various hosts about the inherent dangers of hitch hiking in South Africa we had no choice today and set out from Inkosana in the Central Berg with the ambition of getting to the small town of Winterton where we would hopefully find the first of what would likely be several mini bus legs to Durban. No more than two minutes were we on the road when an elderly couple stopped to give us a ride. It turned out they were only going a few km in our direction, but we were inclined to agree with them that every little bit helps. They had just enough time before reaching their turn off to give us the usual story about not picking up hitchers, but then seeing us and ... read more

Hello All! I know I'm jumping ahead and I don't have time to really go into detail, but you must know one thing and you must know it now. Today we went into the townships (shantytowns/hoovervilles/etc.) around Capetown. Yes, it was part of an official tour, but this tour is not like the "I rode a bus past Dustin Hoffman's house!" kind of tour. This was more like seven of us following a local into the homes and lives of people who had to build their own shacks, illegally, on government land all because of the racism of the establishment. Anyway, we can go into that later. What's important is that Stacey, Devan, Daniel and myself sat down inside a smoke-filled shack made of corugated steel, cardboard and scrapwood. We huddled around a fire in a ... read more

Hello! - haven’t updated in awhile. I am doing well. There have been lots of goings-on in the last couple of weeks - lots of changes with volunteers leaving and many kids being discharged from the hospital!! Sad but exciting! And the weather is nice & sunny in the day - apparently very non winterish lately! This of course works out to my benefit! Last week as everyone was starting to leave Athlone I started to feel like I am winding down & getting ready for the next part of my trip. However, there is still a week and a half left here and there are many new things that have been happening like new volunteers arriving (but none coming to work at Sarah Fox!), Emily gone then back again, new places to visit like the ... read more
