After a lovely week spent with Andrew, Ella and the kids, we headed off to visit Craig, Shantelle and Chloé on their farm, Devon Bank, near Indwe in the Eastern Cape. It was an 8½ hour drive which was uneventful until we reached the town of Aliwal North. We had just crossed the bridge into town when we had to stop as there were two gangs throwing stones at each other across the main road, some the size of ½ bricks. It was quite an intense battle and they seemed to have no regard for the vehicles trying to get through. We waited at a safe distance until hostilities calmed a little and made a run for it. We made it through safely and reported it to the police manning the roadblock on the way out ... read more

From my window, rocky mountainsides and green branches peek out from behind the man-made angles of the residence complexes. It’s a nice contrast for me. This lazy Saturday morning is brisk but sunny, a nice relief from the constant rainy days that bring on a biting cold and chase me under the covers of my bed—we still haven’t gotten our promised heaters. Do you know that feeling of fall? The smell of fire or leaves, or something I can’t really put my finger on? That’s the feeling I’ve got today. It’s my second week here in Stellenbosch and my mind and emotions are beginning to settle. I’m feeling quite at ease and each day I am more excited to be here, realizing the adventure of it all… The town is cute, with lots of shops and ... read more

The bruised bums are beginning to recover and we've managed to get rid of the majority of the dust we collected along the way - it gets everywhere! Note to anyone intending to undertake a similar venture, don't take any white clothing with you, especially socks, ours will never be the same again! We've had a great week with Andrew & Ella, Phil has managed to get a couple of games of golf in and Laura and Ella spent the day at the Mangwanani health spa getting totally pampered. Laura deserved it after her ordeal last week. We also went to a Barnyard Theatre evening with a live band playing a rather eclectic selection of music. It's a great idea, you take along your own picnic (pizzas in our case), kick back and enjoy the evening. ... read more

We weren’t expecting to cycle on day 5, but we’ve already had a whinge about the information with regards to routes & distances, so won’t mention it again. That said we didn’t have sufficient clean clothes for 5 days, but at this stage we were past caring. We set off later than normal and yet again had to keep close together in our group with a Landy following close behind due to game concentrations. This makes riding very dusty! We had to stop once or twice to avoid elephant activity, but we were never in any danger. The pace was fast and there was some sense of humour failure when we hit hills for the last 10kms, some of which Laura had to be pushed up by fellow cyclists! We reached the tar road at 11:30, ... read more

YABADABADOO!!!!! Just got confirmation, we have lift off!!! Bikes are free and the boys are working on them as I type, later on we're packing and loading our "best friends to be for the next 4 weeks", and at the crack of dawn.... vroom vroom!! We're starting 3 days late, but we're racing the first few days and should be back on track with the original schedule by day 4 - may god be with us! About 1.000kms a day... (sore bottoms...) Tomorrow we head North through Namaqualand - one of the 7 flower wonders of the world, apparently it's the best season in the last decade due to the early rains, will get some good pics and hopefully will be updating the blog in the next week, aiming to at least once a week... Light ... read more

On one side yes, a great start... We've had an extra few days in CT as the bikes are taking till tuesday or wednesday to clear custom's... Capetown is spectacular! Clean, tidy and orderly and the locals are so couteous - a shock to anyone who's lived in spain/andorra. A must is a climb up Table mountain. The cable car is having it's anual service so we decided to climb. A very hard climb indeed, but the most amazing trek ever. It took us 5,5 hrs, we started one side, got a little "detoured" at the top and climbed down the other. The views from the top are breath taking. And the scenery we were taken through along our route was so varied. A little sore today to say the least though. We took a drive ... read more

We needed to be in Rivonia by 06:30, which meant getting up at 04:30. Phil forgot to correct the time on his mobile to the local time-zone which is 1 hour ahead of the UK. This isn’t a major issue unless you’re using your phone as an alarm clock, which we were! Fortunately Ella wanted to go back to bed and knocked on our door at 05:00 to say good-bye. A short mad flap ensued which, as it turns out, was unnecessary as the mechanic joining us was 45mins late. Our bus got under way shortly before 07:30, progress was pretty slow, and we lost a piece of the bus along the way. No one knows quite how or why, but driving through the Magoobaskloof Mountains, our driver noticed an excessive amount of sparks in his ... read more

This leg of my journey has been the trip of a lifetime and I'm really sad it's over although if I'm honest, I will not be sorry if I don't see another tent for a long while! Although it was tough (and very basic) at times it has been really good fun especially as I've been with such a good bunch of people. I'm now in Cape Town where the weather is not as good as you're having. Can't believe the temperatures you're enjoying! It was raining here when I arrived yesterday but much nicer today, thankfully. We went on a Township tour when we arrived yesterday morning. It was fascinating to see but also a bit depressing, particularly when they took us into one of the communal living houses. These are concrete blocks of housing ... read more

Although we didn’t leave for the bike ride until the Tuesday, events started on the Monday with the fetching of our rental bikes from Fritz Pienaar Cycles in Pretoria. Arno provided us with some fantastic bikes at a very reasonable rate, and he was extremely helpful. We had a slight drama when we got back to Andrew & Ella’s to find that we couldn’t lower Laura’s saddle far enough, a quick call to Arno and next thing we were taking a hacksaw to the saddle post - sorted! ... read more

Cape Town - our final stop ! We're right at the end of our trip now and both looking forward to going home, and sad to come to the end of our adventures. We're staying with Alex who is friend of mine from the Southampton climbing club and has been living in Cape town for the last 3 years. Unfortunately our timing could have been better ! The week that we've decided to decend on Alex happens to be the final week of her masters... Table mountain dominates Cape Town as it is right slap bang in the middle of the city. We set off somewhat nervously to attack the mountain. Finding the cable car shut for winter maintainance, there was no choice but to go for it the hard way - on foot. Halfway up ... read more
