The other day I was going through some of the thousands of tract that they have here and I picked out a few to read and from those I found these two poems that I wanted to share with you, I hope that you enjoy. This one is for any of your who have had trials in your life lately, those of you who have emailed me to let me know, I am praying for you. A Tribute to my Friends I’ve always had a feeling— That God sent you my way, He knew that I would need your help To walk along life’s way. You’re steady—true and loyal An anchor in life’s sea, And when my ship goes to tossing— You always stand by me. Just your presence helps me To know that you ... read more

Today was my first day at work at the Cango Wildlife Ranch. It turned out to be more of an orientation so we could take a look around and find out what this center is all about and what difference we could make. Got up at 6:45, ate cornflakes and bananas for breakfast, and left the backpacker's by 7:30am. Thewalk to the ranch (which took about 20 min) started out a little chilly. However, a quarter of the way through, we started hitting warm pockets of air. It's the sensation that you sometimes get when you are swimming in an ocean and there are occasional warm water currents, or when your standing next to someone peeing in a pool. ;) By the end of the walk, it was already pretty warm and I had to take ... read more

Let me start by saying that we're not in Nelspruit in spite of what it says on this blog. We are in fact in Hazyview (the Bootjack of South Africa). I no longer know what's been happening for the last week and am not even certain of what I wrote about last time. Here's a quick recap. For those who don't know, Brick and Fred are Ashley's parents at whose home we lived for four (three?) days while in Wilderness. Ashley is a co-worker of mine at George's office. She is South African. Wilderness is a beautiful coastal town scarcely on the eastern side of the point on South Africa where (supposedly) the Atlantic meets the Indian. Now for why I've lost total track of time.. The Bungee jump. There's a brief moment at the instant ... read more

I just realized that I didn't explain the title of my previous post. The Karoo is the region of South Africa that is known for its dry, deserty climate, its vegetation, and it's flat expanses of land. We are located in the Klein (small) Karoo. The Big Karoo is located farther north.... read more

Pretty low key day today. We got up and Erika drove us 3.5 hours to our final destination of Oudtshoorn (pronounced odes-hern ). We drove away from the coast and inland through the mountains. Up until now, the scenery had been green and lush. Right after we went through the mountain passes, the vegetation changed to short shrubbery, some cacti, and the tips of the mountains were sandy instead of grassy. Oudtshoorn is known for it's ostrich farms so everywhere you look, there are souvenirs, lamps, and teapots made out of ostrich eggs. I went to the supermarket called Pick n' Pay and as I was walking down the aisle with the eggs, everything looked normal until I saw the basket of ostrich eggs right next to the chicken eggs. Let me tell you, these things ... read more

The mountains were fantastic, even with the haze from the burning season. We did a walk by ourselves the first day. We were told it was a three hour walk - after seven hours we made it back to our car having had to scramble up the last section of "foot path" onto the top plateau and scramble down the other side, and we were very hungry! The views from the top were excellent, and a lovely sense of isolation. The following day we did a walk to the top of the Amphitheatre. Even more spectacular views on the way up, right through the "Dragon Mountains" towards Lesotho - endless blue ridges of mountains. The views from the top into the valleys went on for miles and miles. A much easier walk than the day before! ... read more

7/8/06 Today is one day in particular that I wish that I could be in the States. My prayers are with Christie Barrett and Erik Huff as they will be getting married today. Also I feel as if everyone is having their birthday while I am gone and today I want to say Happy Birthday to my lifelong friend Jessica McDonough. Yesterday was a very encouraging day for me. We went to Bethlehem and I was able to take a friend with me and she showed me around and we shopped and such. It was such a beautiful day and it was nice to just hang out all day. We went into a bunch of stores but I didn’t buy anything but two pairs of socks, a camera (because the one that I brought has ... read more

Today was another beautiful day crisp, cool, and sunny. Left our backpacker's hostel in the morning and headed to the Knysna Elephant Sanctuary. Here, we learned a lot about the elephants of Knysna and we also got to feed and interact with them. There were 5 of them, three adults and two youngsters. Sally was the matriarch of the herd so all of the elephants followed her. Keisha was the baby of the herd at 2 years of age. and Shaka was the only male of the herd. The other two elephants were Thandi and Nandi. Whenever the elephants rubbed against each other, it sounded like sandpaper, but when they walked, it was completely silent because they have padded feet. It was amazing but sad to hear that the population of elephants dropped from 500 in ... read more

Another short trip with Bazza, this one our second last, and another place that came highly recommended by Dani. St. Lucia and The Greater St. Lucia Wetlands. Set in the midst of a number of eco systems including marine, with coral reefs and beaches; swamps; sand forests and bush velds; and the largest estuary in Africa, St. Lucia seemed like the perfect place to spend our last few days in S.A. and also to start seeing some animals. We camped at Bibs BP which was one our favourite places so far due to the several daily activities they organised, most of which were free. Every morning there was a guided walk in which we saw lots of zebra, wildebeast and different species of antelope, not to mention dung beetles, leopard poo and the carcass of a ... read more
