It did not take me long to feel at home with the cheetahs in Stellenbosch. I have always known that at some point in my life I would leave the Netherlands whether it was for a year or forever. Now it was that time and South Africa was my destination. Cheetahs are magnificent but highly endangered animals and the story needs to be told, people visiting the facility need to know how we are helping the cheetahs from going fully extinct. As volunteers we lived about 10 minutes away (bakkie speed) from the facility and shared laughter and tears. Living together with people that you have never met is not always easy but sharing the little cottage with this group has been the best time of my life. Somebody ones told me: You meet people for ... read more

Hello everybody, A travel blog...where do I start? Let me start with a quick introduction! I am Anke Bakens and I am 29 years YOUNG and I am from the Netherlands but currently living in South Africa. That is done and now over to the real work.... As so many I always stayed in the comfort of my comfort zone, it was not that I did not have any goals or ambitions, I was just scared. Scared to leave my security, friends, my job and well....all that I knew. After dreaming for all these years I took matters in my own hand and I made the decision to go for it! I have always known that I wanted to make a difference in the world of wildlife and living in the Netherlands that meant moving to ... read more

This is the first opportunity where I have found a space to find the internet and log on!! I am borrowing a PC from this local guesthouse. It is a manor house with just a handful of rooms, and is beautiful, feel as though I should have some slippers to walk around it! It overlooks Knysna's lagoon and is a lovely setting. Very quiet, sleepy town, which hides more within, if you delve a little deeper, unfortunately we have only had a day (two nights) to enjoy this location. We drove to one of the bays, enjoyed the beautiful and quiet beach and then drove back to Knysna to take a boat trip to the heads, the entrance to the Lagoon. It was cloudy but warm this morning, and this afternoon was early twenties, very pleasant, ... read more

My other 'blog' was written whilst away ... I am updating and adding now I am back! I have had several people ask where we stayed it was http://www.parkesmanor.co.za/ and really was very nice, we were looked after well. And just a 10-15 min easy walk to the restaurants and shops on the lagoon. The shops were nice (lots of security personnel around - however didn't feel unsafe at all, very clean and tidy). We did a bit of driving, but not too much, drove briefly to Plettenburg Bay, but were unable to find easy access to beach and therefore drove back to Knysna and found Brentwood on Sea. Beautiful sandy beach and lovely location. We enjoyed the remainder of the day on a relaxing boat trip to the headlands. Enjoyed shopping at the waterfront and ... read more

RASTAFARI! Iyre mon. What an amazing time we had with the rastas of judas sqaure in kynsna. You can go for a tour with a local guy, Brother Paul, who shows you about and if you want you can stay a while and soak it up. We decide to stay the night in the township, which houses the 20 rasta families in amongst hundreds of other people. These people are amongst the 10 million in safrica waiting for proper houses. It is an experience living here even for a night, and actually, not too bad at all. We drive in to the township and are met by the smiley welcoming and diminutive Brother Paul. He proceeds to show us about the place, where they worship, how they worship, introduces us the other rastas and their way ... read more

Today has been a rather uneventful day spent in the Baz Bus (SA backpacking bus system that takes you from hostel to hostel along the East Coast). After leaing Cape Town in the rain, the skies started to clear up the further north we got, and i arrived in Knysa in the afternoon under clear blue skies... and they are supposed to stay that way!! Jipeeh! The drive was spectacular, first through farm land, then some mountains, until we headed east again towards the Ocean and drove along the Coast, where the wind was still going strong and the waves were massive. Well, i am at a very quite hostel, a couple of blocks of the main street and the waterfront now, and am enjoying a quite evening by the fire place as soon as i ... read more

After breakfast and a nice walk, we headed towards the Marina in search of laundry facilities. RIGHT after I walked out of the grocery store with a little package of washing powder, I spotted a "we'll do it for you" laundry. BINGO! We dropped off our 2 loads and promised to be back at 5:00 to pick them up. Then we did a little internet time at a "real" internet cafe (as in, they ACTUALLY served coffee and/or snacks!) Then off we scooted, back to Knysna. Stopped along the way to get some craft items for Boo, and to look for some for ourselves. I'm not 100% sure these carvings and things were really South African, but I liked how they looked. I think they will be nice in our living room. We also spotted a ... read more

by Mrs Plod Woke up at 7:00ish, and started our day with tea (getting to be a habit!). Had a very nice breakfast at the establishment serving "the freshest coffee in Sedgefield"--Fijnbosch Coffee House. I read Die Burger (Afrikaans newspaper) to Ross and Owen. :) We decided to skip the Tjoe Choo, and explore Sedgefield instead (since we were staying there, it made sense!) After about 15 minutes, we decided that Sedgefield (no offence to any Sedgefielders out there!) is a long strip mall with pockets of houses, resorts and little marshy lakes. Very pretty, but not much to explore--so we decided to head to Knysna, instead. Just 20 minutes or so down the coast from Sedgefield, Knysna is a pretty resort town on a beautiful lagoon which empties into the Indian Ocean through the infamous ... read more
