Having trouble uploading photos here, so will attach them soon I hope. UPDATE photos uploaded. I had planned on spending 2 nights at the Buffalo Bay backpackers, but in the end it became 4 - its such a beautiful spot, a beachhouse, right on the beach with the waves of the Indian Ocean everywhere around. Its been an essentially very lazy few days, aside from the first day. The weather wasn't great so myself and another couple of backpackers, Dietrich and Helene, went for a walk in the nearby Knysna forests. And we got lost. I had been told by a local the night before that light planes have crashed in these forests and never been found - a thought which kept occuring to me during the 6th hour of our supposedly 2.5 hour walk... We're ... read more

Yay, I'm going down to Knysna during whale season! Last time I went during whale season a whale and her calf swam into Knysna lagoon. I could watch them from about 100 meters away! i also watched whales in Plettenburg Bay. (Plett is about hlf an hours drive from knysna) Every year over 3000 Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to South Africa to give birth and mate in the warm sheltered bays off SA. They spend the winter (June to October) in the quiet bays between the West Coast and Port Elizabeth. September seems to be the best time to see them. Every year the numbers increase since the southern right whale is still recovering from the large amount of whaling before it was banned in South Africa (in 1940). (The population increases by about ... read more

Knysna’s Seafood Platters and Shopping Aaahh ... a nice slow morning today: gradually coming round when the kids piled into bed with us, wonderfully strong showers, brekkie (not as good as Hog Hollow though - we’re hoping we haven’t set the bar too high with that one), a bit of DVD watching and blogging. When eventually we were ready to go out, we drove into Knysna to find food and have a general bimble about. We left the Verso under the watchful eye of a car guard and walked further into town, the need for food asserting itself a bit more in the form of muttering children. From the Lonely Planet guide we found one of the recommended restaurants - a seafood place called Ocean Basket. The platters we ordered were huge, and it took us ... read more

From Plett to Knysna After the tremendous downpour yesterday it was great to wake up this morning to brilliant sunshine. Breakfast was served outside on the terrace due to the excellent weather. Afterwards we packed up and headed off in search of whales. This part of the South African coast is renowned for its abundance of whales, mostly humpbacks and southern right whales. First we went in search of lookout points in Plettenberg Bay, the first one we came across was not good, just a road ending at the sea with no real aspect and nowhere to walk to even. Next we found Robberg Beach - the largest beach in the town - and as the kids and Mark were clambering up some rocks they noticed some dolphins swimming in the water by a boat. After ... read more

Not much has happened in the past couple of days. I've jumped on the Baz Bus to Knysna. I was supposed to stay here two nights, but the weather is not co-operating so I'm leaving for warmer climates this evening. I did manage to have a productive day in Knysna though... I went on a tour of the town. Knysna is know for the "Knysna Heads" - two land heads that form a lagoon. Very beautiful area that is supposed to be stunning and overflowing with tourists in the summer. On the tour we visited an oyster cultivator, a craft market and finished off with a visit to a shebeen in the townships. A Shebeen is a local pub, from what I understand they used to be outlawed. Not so anymore. 10 Rand will get you ... read more

I just stumbled across these videos of this "bridge" in Knysna. We were walking somewhere near the left head, and came across a small beach, and obviously this bridge was put there for fishermen to go across to the rocks. Dave went across first, then had a great laugh filming me crossing it. Keep in mind this was BEFORE I jumped off a 216 m high bridge, and this thing looked precarious at best. Just an amusing entry,I think...... read more

FINALLY!!!! I have taken a break from drinking and partying 2 write this, since we left Plett, I havent had a free second, havent been sober really at all!!! Knysna's main attraction is definitely not its beaches, there are 3 of them. one is only accessible via a flight of 100 stairs and is not swimmable!!! It IS known for it's forests and scenic walking trails and hikes. On the Eastern had you can take a walk up to the viewpoint, and there are some quite adventurous trails around. While trying to sneak across the edge of a cliff on the sea to get to where the fishermen were, we got greeted by a large wave, soaking me of course!!!! This is also where we discovered Paquitas, a gorgeous restaurant on the edge of the water, huge, with a cosy bar ... read more

I wish I could name all the farm stalls/tea gardens/craft shops we stopped at along the way and on this trip, but I can't remember their names,I should write them down, I know, but there are so many, try and stop at each if you can, some serve great food and have wicked things on sale ,we went slightly off the beaten track into Buffalo bay outskirts, and found a jumble of buildings next to the road that used to be the station, it now houses a homely coffee shop, leather shop and a very nice craft shop, where Dave bought me a beautiful dress, one of those hand weaved patterned long dresses, can't explain it, find the store and buy one for yourself, they come in mini too!!! We arrived in Knysna to find the right hand side of the road teeming with ... read more

The Garden Route I think we left you at Oudtshoorn, the "ostrich capital of the world"! From there we did a couple of hours drive to the coast and a place called Knysna. This is a really nice little town set on a lagoon. We stayed for a couple of days and really didn't do too much, just wandered around the town and when to a nearby beach at Brenton on Sea. On the beach we met a bloke from Leeds, who has a house there. Anyway, he started the conversation telling us his wife had left him and his business was going down the tubes, so he'd need to sell the South Africa house. We really didn't want to play counseller so made a polite exit. We also met another interesting character in a pub ... read more
