We were allowed time for an hour’s extra sleep this morning, or at least time for lolling around in this very modern Protea Hotel Knysna Quays. Since we are on the waterfront, we walked the five minutes to “The Spirit of Knysna”, a tour boat that quietly motored over to the Feather Bed Nature Reserve, a privately owned conservation park. The eighty tourists from the boat got onto two vehicles: tractors pulling two trailers with bench seats. Slowly and with care the tractors hauled us up a steep road to the top of the “heads” above the mouth of the Knysna River. The sky was blue. The sea was turquoise, splashing white surf across dark orange and black rocks! Classic and forever beautiful! A guide led us along the path, with no commentary, except... read more

Today was our longest driving day – 400 km. Last night Chantelle, our local guide, convinced first us and then Duane that we should visit a big-cat breeding program to see leopards, which otherwise were “missing” from our “Big Five” list. Eventually, Duane came round, discovering that this route was 63 km shorter than his planned route. The drive was on secondary highways – patched asphalt and no hard shoulders. This country route allowed Duane to convey how the settler movement encountered this area. In the period of 1820 – 1827, shiploads of English men were brought to settle the area and establish the colony. (Later Irish “Colleens” were brought out to become wives – shows how desperate things were on all sides.) Most of the men quit the bush within a year, but those who ... read more

Well Christmas is nearly here and for us it is a very strange time. We have normally been doing chrimbly shopping for weeks, organising gatherings and having lots of nights out with friends and family. This year the sun is shining we have no tree to decorate and no dinners or party nights to go to. We have bought ourselves a Christmas hat each as you will see from the pictures and we are making efforts to wear them and get a picture taken each time we go out. This week we have been to a carols by candlelight evening, it was in aid of the local hospice and is an event which takes place every year in the centre of Knysna. We had reserved our places the week before and our little table for two ... read more

Well this last week we shared our 12 year anniversary with the 1 year anniversary of the death of Nelson Mandela. The newspapers were full of pictures and statements from senior officials to local people all voicing there positivity of the legacy of the great man. The church bells around the country all rang out and a three minute silence was held in rememberance. I don't think any party leader anywhere around the world has ever been held in such reverence and with such adoration and love than Madiba was and still is in this country. A family rememberance service was held and the sacrifice of a cow was made. We had a lovely little break away to a nice b&b with an award winning restaurant. The position was lovely overlooking the river and there was ... read more

This week the weather has been warm sunny with a lovely warm breeze. We have been for walks along beaches, visited an Italian restaurant again that we really like, the food is delicious and it's right on the beach, lovely chillin out spot. We have ambled and pootled round town and I think we have tried every coffee shop out!! We went whale watching on Wednesday, very exciting. We went out on a fast boat so we donned our life jackets, and with a little trepidation as to how Bazi would fair out at sea we set off at a steady pace through the lagoon. We soon reached the point where he could get some speed up and it was fab. The sea was actually very calm that day but it is thrilling taking off and ... read more

We were told that Knysna is a boring town, but a little bit of window shopping, walking around the beautiful lagoon which changes with the low and high tie and going up to the heads of Knysna made this far from a boring stop. Knysna has multiple meanings, but the one mostly prefered is the forest going into the sea.... read more

Visited the Brampton wine estate this week, the setting is beautiful. Our table for lunch was set amongst the vines, can't get any nearer the grape except in the glass already squeezed though! We had a delicious tapas lunch and whiled away the afternoon drinking a very chilled glass or two of Rose and looking at the spectacular scenery of the mountains. It was a lovely spot and a very chilled out way to spend an afternoon. Life is good! On Sunday we went to the remembrance service in town. It was held at the monument and the veterans and local cadets were on parade. It was a very hot day but we managed to get a front row seat in the shade. They played all the old time war songs whilst they were waiting to ... read more

Hello to all our readers. The proprietor, editor and chief reporter of this blog ,that's vicki if you had not guessed, has allowed her cub reporter, that's me, access to the techie stuff to provide an update on our travel adventures. We are experiencing somewhat of a hiatus at present in that the weather has taken a bit of a downward turn with grey skies, cool winds and some spectacular thunder storms. There is no such thing as bonfire night here in SA , in fact we have learnt that carrying, or using fireworks here is an arrestable offence, but the night skies have been illuminated by fork and sheet lightning giving us some terrific shows. It was also Halloween but it isn't a major thing over here. Perhaps understandable can you imagine knock knock, hi ... read more

Started the week off with a walk in Knysna forest (yes we found it eventually). It was like walking in Jurassic Park, huge trees, massive ferns and all the wildlife noises that you would expect to hear. Saw lots of animal evidence (poo!!) but didn't come across anything except some frogs and the longest fattest millipedes you have ever seen. Baz thought I'd promised him a walk in a bug free zone, bless! It was a good walk and we went on a particularly hot day to avoid the heat of the sun although the humidity in the forest was a bit stifling. If we were celebrities and if we were in the jungle we could have shouted "get me out of here"! After our walk we headed home and had some delicious ostrich kebabs on ... read more

Well another hectic week in paradise. We started the week off with lots of good intentions of doing lots of exercise and on Monday morning complete with a picnic of smashed up egg butties we set off to do a 20km walk in Knysna forest. It was called the elephant trail. Named this because there used to be 400 elephants in the forest but now there are only 3 remaining so our chances of bumping into one would have been very remote indeed! As you can tell we never quite made it and as many of you will know this is because Baz and I have absolutely no sense of direction or as I think happened somebody stole the road marker. Anyway we ended up driving through the mountains for three hours on dirt tracks, hairpin ... read more
