It was our last weekend in South African and it was certainly one full of animals. Megan and Byron were visiting family for the weekend but luckily were able to make time for to visit Boulders Beach in Simons Town. Somewhere Alex was going to love. It is about 30-40 minutes drive from Constantia, with the most stunning coastal views along the way. Boulders beach is a fantastic area surrounded by African penguins. You can pay to visit Boulders beach and get on the beach but there is a perfectly free walkway allowing you to get just as close to the Penguins. Megan and Byron set off on their long drive and we set off to World of Birds in Hout Bay. It cost us 95 rand each, (just over £5) and what a fabulous little ... read more

Don't you find it frustrating when you get to a place and find Bob Geldoff has beaten you to it? Fortunately there were no strains of "Do they Know its Christmas?" Bob's work in Imizamo Yethu was much more understated. The name of this place is a Xhosa phrase which roughly translates as "collective struggle". The locals call it "Mandela Park" and are proud of the times the great man wandered their streets to understand their struggles. The Blue Tour bus dropped us off at a roundabout near the entrance to the settlement where we were greeted by Thando (Xhosa for "love") a cheerful, fun-loving young man with a huge smile. We immediately enjoyed his company and we were sad to say goodbye when he introduced us to Kenny, our guide for the tour. Kenny was ... read more

Back in Hout Bay the guys were getting ready for night of revelry at Sean's bar, Forex. I don't know what inspired it, perhaps a suggestion from Martin or another Dutch intern, but it was King's Day and that would be the theme that night. Still, that wasn't happening till later in the evening and we had a few hours yet. The day passed one way or another until the four of us, Sean, JP, myself and Legend, headed out for a walk up to Chapman's Peak. As I think I mentioned the Chapman's Peak road was visible from Sean's patio. It ascended in a series of gradual inclines and bends from sea level at Hout Bay itself to a few hundred feet a.s.l. at a point opposite the mouth of the bay where there was ... read more

We've been here a week already!!!! My how time flies when you are having fun! We have been in Cape Town a week now and it has been a week filled with new sights, new smells, new people and new adventures! Friday March 07 Today was the day we decided to check out how we were getting to Jo'burg. We left the flat at about 10 am and went straight to the train station. I had researched transportation at home before we left and found a tourist class train called the Shoslalosha train that sounded like it was the way to go. I attempted to book our seats on line and the site wouldn't let me. No problem I thought!! Once we were in Cape Town we could book it right? Easier said than done!!! Got ... read more

O mar? Não me pergunte, não entrei, mas imagino algo em ... read more

When i visited the small village of Hout Bay a couple months ago it was really amazing!!!Hout Bay is located on the other side of Table mountain and the drive there from Cape Town is beautiful as you travel along the coastline of the Atlantic ocean and watch as the clear, fresh blue waters laps up against the rocks. Hout Bay is a small fishing village with a small harbour and filled with boats entering and leaving. It is known for its 'Fish and Chips' and when i went there i knew i had to try it out. They were the best fish and chips i have ever tasted!! There are lots of restuarants to eat at with different meals to choose from. There is plenty accommodation to choose from, all set in quiet surroundings. I ... read more

For lunch on Monday the boys and I took a drive from Camps Bay to Hout Bay, driving around the 12 Apostles to this tiny little fishermans village. Not far from here, maybe 15-20 minutes. We drove to the docks and got a nice wiff of the unloading area -- WHEW that smelled bad! We walked around the small marina area and off to this nice little place that Ryan remembered called Dunes to have lunch. It was this old fashioned looking, but re-done house right on the water, with a white picket fence and a jungle gym set in the sand for little kids. Really cool little venue that people can rent for their private parties. AMAZING views. We ate delicious lunch there and headed back to Camps Bay. Just a little venture before Orrin ... read more

But squid steak is. I order it because it’s cheap and I’m curious (reasoning responsible for so many mistakes culinary or otherwise!).It arrives looking very like fried strip steak though pale and creamy in colour and tender to bite, I like. It's a hoot! (see what I did there?) We’re sat in the Mariner’s Wharf, a tourist beacon in Hout Bay, it being a massive building right on the beach. Inside its dark timber recesses and matching tables and chairs scream traditional English pub and it’s festooned with all manner of nautical tat whose theme I have to report sadly includes the staff. Sporting stripy nautical jumpers, I expect them to break out into a jaunty hornpipe at any time. Really, it’s not that bad though and if the Pirate’s Arms even came close to this ... read more

Thursday 12th February A slow start to the day as the big drive of yesterday had taken it’s toll: leaving me rather red faced on account of too much sun and too little suntan lotion. We decided to head for the Cape Peninsula and aim for lunch at the Mariner’s Wharf in Hout Bay, which in fact is a busy fishing port. We drove into Cape Town and out past the superb new football stadium at Green Point where the world Cup Final will be played next July (if you go to the Atlantic Coast to Cape Point map and zoom in firstly on Cape Town then centre the map on Green Point and zoom in progressively. On the map it will say Metropolitan Golf Club but if you switch to the satellite image you will ... read more

So I'm about 2 weeks into my 6th or 7th trip down to Cape Town, luckily the folks have a holiday home and have no problem shelling out for flights! Was chilling out in the Lookout deck down by the harbour in Hout Bay, just having a few beers while the kingklip dinner settled. One thing struck me about the place, there's something very neo-old-world about, gave me a real colonial vibe. I'm writing this so long after because I just read 'North of South' by Shiva Naipaul, and he pretty much describes the hotels and their bars as being the last bastion of the settlers. Well I got this vibe from the Lookout. A band was playing, well one guy with a guitar and a drum machine, and everybody was up dancing, mainly old folks ... read more
