Sunday was mainly deticated to sleeping and homework. Very boring. I did take a break to get some sun out by the pool. I pushed Corinna in. But she managed to pull me in too. It was FREEZING... again. After dinner the guys called us to play some ball. I was hoping to learn some new tecniques. Nope. When we walked in, the guys and a few girls were jumping off the upper level on to big, fluffy mats. I could not resist taking the leap. Thank goodness I did not chicken out! The jump gave me an amazing rush of adrenaline. ... read more

It has been a crazy week. I have joined a group that helps underprivileged children improve their English. I love it. We meet twice a week for an hour and a half. I am really good with the kids, which is no surprise. There is also a Rotaract group here that I joined. Rotaract is a branch of the Rotary, but for teenagers. The group has not had a meeting since I joined though. I cannot wait to see how the group works and contribute in any way I can. I also signed up for a hiking expedition that will be led by one of my classmate's mom. We will be going out for two nights and sleeping under the stars. FUN! I am actually a worried about that because I have never been one to ... read more

I thought that everybody stayed in the boarding house during the weekend. Nope. Most boarding people board during the week and go home during the weekend. Big surprise. Only 7 other girls boarded with me over the weekend. We had a blast once I broke out of my shell. On Saturday before the braai (South African for BBQ), there was a huge water fight. People were thrown into the pool, including me. That forced me out of my little awkward bubble. Once I started trying to shove the guys into the pool, they found out I’m not a snob. After dinner we played an intense game of soccer. The ball hit me square in the forehead at full speed. Ouch. That was not the only time I got hit too! Sunday we went to the Cape ... read more

School here is crazy different than school at home. Never going to assemblies vs. assemblies EVERY Friday. No uniform vs. uniform. Assigned seating vs. free seating. Same schedule every day vs. different schedule every day. No break vs. 25 minute break time. Zero vs. Naut. The list could go on and on. The differences make my mind boggle sometimes. For two days I was running around in circles trying to figure out where to go. I thought I was going crazy then I got the schedule. There is a different order of classes for each day of the week every day. Maybe it is because I was in Pre AP at home, but I feel like the classes are more relaxed here. Like in history we will read three paragraphs tops then we will start debating ... read more

Well my Ambien did not help me sleep through the night like I hoped it would. Boy, let me tell you, being wide awake at 1:30 am is awfully boring. No TV shows on and no one to talk to. One good thing that came from my boredom is that I discovered how good tea is with milk. Yummmm. Once mom and Sandy were finally awake, we could go to the Paarl Mall. I told the Jessica where we were going to Paarl Mall. She had a good laughed at my pronunciation of the town's name. She explained how to say it, but I cannot seem to get the accent quite right. The mall was okay. There were a couple different camera stores, a grocery store, a Woolworths, and Mr. Price. The best store was Cum ... read more

Wide awake with only a few hours of sleep, but I am ready to explore!! Where to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek? If you chose Stellenbosch, we agreed with you. Mom, Sandy, and I shopped and toured the city until I thought I would die of exhaustion. Jet lag definitely caught up with me. Napping saved my tiered butt. For our first dinner in Franschhoek, the food capital of South Africa, we ate at Ryan's Kitchen. INCREDIBLE! My mouth was exploding from the spices in the sauces. I also got the chance to try exotic meats like steinbok and crocodile. Based on this meal I can understand why critics call the food capital. Dinner ended up being a two hour parade of delicious food, but by then end I was falling asleep at the table. In my exhausted ... read more

A 17 hour plane ride is not for the faint of heart. Literally. Within 15 minutes of boarding, one woman fainted in her seat, leading her to disembark and head back home. Five hours into the flight, another girl fainted by the bathrooms and pretty much throughout the entire flight, a boy threw up all over himself and the seats next to him. Really nasty. When we arrived in Johannesburg, we met up with Bruce, who works for Gracy Travel Agency. He was our knight in shining armor. Our flight was delayed an hour and a half, so we were under a major time constraint to catch our Cape Town flight. Bruce guided us from customs to the baggage checking area. He pushed one of our carts and I pushed the other. Let me say, balancing ... read more

Left the lovely Rothman manor in Swellendam and headed to Franshhoek. Andreas (at Rothman manor) suggested the best route for us to drive in terms of scenery and he wasn't wrong. All the driving here has been enjoyable as the scenery really is stunning. (Should mention that when got in our car to leave we found that it has been washed! We like this level of service) Franshhoek is in one of the wine regions of South Africa and generally regarded as one of the 'foodie' destinations. It certainly didn't disappoint and we ate some fabulous food whilst we were here. One of the great things about South Africa is that it is cheap. We can eat in great restaurants which we could never afford at home for the price of a run of the mill ... read more

Today is a chilly, rainy day. I would prefer a warm sunny day, but the rain is soothing and the day is relaxing. We grudgingly left Leuwenvoet House at 9:30 this morning, saying good-bye to Frankie (our resident cat) and the two wonderful women who were our hosts -- and who seemed to work 24 hours a day. Brian drove us to the bottom of the cable car for a view through the clouds -- a view of Cape Town and sea beyond. Suprisingly, the cable car was running despite the think tablecloth of clouds draped over Table Mountain. Even though Brian clearly thought we were crazy, we took the gondola to the top. On a nice day it is very crowded. Today it was only the four of us and a South African family, who ... read more

Wed 14 Oct Anybody that knows me really well will be aware that wine is one of my top ten favourite things. OK, it probably makes it into the top 5. Therefore I am in heaven here in the wine country, with hundreds of vineyards, wine farms and wine shops. When I went to dinner last night the wine list (that guaranteed that all the wines listed were just from this valley) ran to several pages. Overwhelmed with the choice I opted for the house dry, which was fabulous. It is impossible to get just a glass of wine here, and if you order one you automatically get a small carafe which is a quarter bottle, and if you order a carafe you get a large one that is half a bottle. The price is astonishingly ... read more
