Hello All! well, I am slowly settling in... I arrived yesterday in my homestay for the next 2 months. It is with a very nice lady (with her son & wife living downstairs) in a muslim area of Athlone. Two other girls have been at the same home for a few weeks now. One is from Dublin, the other from the UK -- and I find myself saying "jumper" now instead of hoodie or sweatshirt so I don't get weird looks! haha It has been CHILLY here - rain drops & wind, but the sun did peak its head out today. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU tara for the slippers!!! I was contemplating bringing my big poufy black ones and should have!! There is no central heating in the houses and no fireplace in my ... read more

So on my last full day in Cape Town I actually got to see all of Table Mountain from the more famous side. YAY (have a photo...will try to add when I get a chance). Early morning flight means very early morning wake up call. My hotel is awesome. They gave me a wake up call...and left me a big pot of coffee outside my door and also packed me a HUGE breakfast to go...awww...was a really great place! Decided to use the hotel driver to take me to the airport. Turned out to be the same guy that picked me up from the hospital. I have such bad luck at this airport because as we turned off the highway to the airport...there was a big accident involving at least two trucks. Waited...waited...no other way into ... read more

Hello All! I will strive to make my entry look more interesting by using lots of *silly *text *formats but I'll probably screw up somewhere along the line! Well, I am here in (non-sunny) South Africa! (It is their winter after all)! Yesterday morning I was picked up at the airport by "Ms. i-to-i" herself, the South African co-ordinator whose young daughter (with the same name as me) held the sign. I was then driven to a homestay for one night in Kommtejie (I think I have spelled that right), showered and taken for lunch at a lovely "farm." I stayed in a really nice house full of a family of surfers where you could stand on the deck and hear the surf, but it was chilly & rainy so I didn't wander to the beach. ... read more

Hello again! So I've really hit the ground running since my last entry! Yes, I made it to the wineries and the peninsula AND Robben Island! Horray!! So much to say. So much history. Instead of blabbin away I've added more photos (1000 words each right?). In brief, Saturday I went on a winery tour. Stellenboch, Paarl and Franchoek regions (you'll see these regions in our SA section of the liquor stores). Sunday, Cape Peninsula, beautiful! Sunshine most of the day allowed this fabulous shot of the cape...WOW hey?! Also saw African Penguins and Dassies (plus many other creatures). Then today, Monday, Robben Island. This is where Nelson Mandela and many others where held political prisoners for the many years during apartheid. Remember, apartheid only ended in 1994. If I get a chance later I'll elaborate ... read more

Afternoon from Cape Town..... Just a quick update on what we've been doing since we left Greece, it's Kelly typing again, as Ju is trying to upload about a hundred photo's on a pc next to me, and it's taking ages. I can't believe how many thousands of miles we now are from home! We left Gatwick on the 10.5 hr flight to Joburg, then got a connection to Cape Town which took another 2 hrs, so we were pretty knackered when we finally got to our hostel. (we did squeeze in a meal at Joburg airport, which I'm ashamed to say was a Wimpy! Ah well). We had 2 seats each on the flight, as it was barely a third full, but we still only got around 3 hours sleep as we had lovely turbulence ... read more

Hello from South Africa. Hello from Cape Town! I made it! Well...some of you may have heard and some may not so I'll keep it brief. First of all I'M OK! But a couple of days ago...few! On the flight I got real sick. Turned out to be really bad food poisoning and as a result I became severely dehydrated and as a result of that I fainted a bunch, and barfed a bunch, flight attendants, paramedics, customs officers, ambulance, hospital, nurses, doctors...WHAT A STORY! It all ended (hours later) with a call to my hotel. They sent someone to fetch me and wow what a fabulous hotel it is! I LOVE IT. Anyway...back on track... Today I managed to get out and wander my neighbourhood. CIVILIZATION HORRAY!! I'm staying in an area call the V ... read more

Hey All, Yeah I have learned quite a bit of spanish now so I thought I would show off a bit. I wrote it and my spanish teacher corrected quite a bit although most of it was right in the first place. I bought Harry Potter number 2 before leaving so that I could practice. There is no English version of the previous blog entry and there may be one in Swahili or something? I doubt it but who knows. It is confirmed that I am Argentinian. After getting off the flight and into a shuttle a couple on the flight asked me from what part of Argentinia I was from, or if I was from Buenos Aires....then I spoke. Lynne: Not sure who you are and not sure if you will read this but I ... read more

Well its been quite awhile since my last blog update so I decided it was time I let all my loyal readers know that I am safe and sound in Africa. Jord and Ryan have provided extremely informative updates on our time in Buenos Aires last weekend and so I will try to focus more on my three days in Africa at this point. I left Buenos Aires at 8:30 PM Wednesday evening and enjoyed a luxurious 7 hour flight across the South Atlantic Ocean. I have nothing but praise for Malaysian Airlines, I managed a seat at the emergency exit for my long legs to stretch out and even had the two seats beside me empty for my stuff. My seat had a lovely metal arm which extended to hold an LCD monitor where I ... read more

Cape Town I awoke early to shower and eat breakfast before heading out to Table Mountain with the group. I had breakfast with a single girl from Belgium. She is the only single girl so I think she will be my tent mate. She seems nice but quiet, although everyone is tried from the long flights. I don't speak French so I don't know that we will have a lot to talk about. She seems young. I met the rest of the group in the lobby of the hotel and we headed down a long set of steps to the truck. I don't know what I was thinking the truck would look like but I was surprised when I saw it. It was an overland truck. I am on an overland trip....should have read the pamphlet ... read more

Cape Town I arrived in Cape Town in the morning. The sky was blue and bright. Table Mountain was beautiful in the morning sun. I was told that I was quite lucky to have such a nice weather as it had been raining the day before. The international flight arrival area was filled with young white families happily meeting each other. Children with signs made to welcome parents home from vacation or business. They all looked so happy, it made you feel like you where really missing out not being part of their world. I met a very interesting man on my hotel limo service ride. He was in Cape Town for a few days on business. He sold safety equipment to African ferry companies. He had been a merchant mariner of several years. He told ... read more
