Well! Many adventures have been had since my last update and it might take me awhile to recall them all! Last weekend's agenda was tweaked a little to omit surfing and include a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium instead. The aquarium and its exhibits are really beautiful... it focuses on, as its name suggests, the two oceans that converge at the bottom of the cape - the Atlantic & the Indian. Our visit to Themba Care, the children's AIDS hospice, was different than we had all imagined. The facilities are gorgeous - they seem to have a lot more money to spend than Sarah Fox - and most the children seemed to be doing really really well on account of their anti-retroviral drug regimes. It was a basically the same as a spending a few ... read more

These kids are a parent's worst nightmare. a) for their perpetual runny noses b) for their icky sticky hands haha This is my third week into "saving kids" at the hospital. And by "saving kids" I mean saving them from EACH OTHER. The hospital is quite small and separated into two wards: one for the itty-bitties (1yr old) and one for the other kiddies (1-12ish years). In the kid's ward there is also a section at the back for the burn children. There are play areas/rooms in each ward and an on-site school for the older kids or the ones who are too much to handle and need some structure. As Sarah Fox is a convalescent hospital, the children are generally returning to health and/or undergoing long medication regimes (like 6 mos of meds for TB) ... read more

Whoo Hoo! I am excited for this weekend :) Apart from Becky's departure back to England, the rest of us are going to hit the beach in Muizenburg & surf up a storm. Saturday morning will also be punctuated by a visit to Themba Care, a Children's AIDS Hospice close to Sarah Fox. Saturday night we plan on staying in town at a GORGEOUS hostel we have frequented before. It is a HUGE lovely victorian-era mansion with 2 enormous verandas, tall tall ceilings, wide hallways and safari-esque decor. It reminds me of being really rich and wearing one of those authentic safari hats and having Jeeves pull up from the dusty desert in a green, top-less Land Rover while shady men smoke cigars and trade poached skins and horns in the back room and I, in ... read more

Well Hello! I haven't updated in awhile but there is so much to say, it seems a little daunting! I have posted pictures that one of the girls has uploaded from her camera. I will have to make this entry quick! (surprise, surprise) Right now I am manning the front desk/reception/switchboard at Sarah Fox because the regular receptionist is sick... time is running out to waste away the afternoon on the web because our ride comes soon. Well, my ankle is back! I haven't mentioned anything up until now to stem the worry from mum - Hiking in France I got a horrible horrible blister. Draining it (yes, with a sterile needle) was ok until after another day working on the slope, carting rocks across "the great wall of St. Victor la Coste" HIGH HIGH up ... read more

a big jambo to all! (hello in kiswahili) i hope this finds everyone doing fabulously! its been about six weeks since my last entry and in that time i have been getting to know the glorious continent of africa. 'safari' in kiswahili means journey, and the last month has been exactly that. it was a bittersweet moment to leave buenos aires at the end of april. 4+ months of exploring south america had been exhilarating, challenging, and rewarding. it was the perfect start to this trip and helped to instill a strong sense of adventure and travel confidence. buenos aires, which back on January 3rd seemed a mirage of all things different and intriguing, had transformed into a home away from home. i felt a moderate amount of trepidation about leaving (which literally flushed itself out ... read more
