Flight delayed by one hour and despite our best attempts no upgrade to business class so had to make do with cattle class. Flight very busy and have to say felt a bit cramped.. We all managed to snooze at some point. Got to car rental place and after a long wait we got underway. We all said we would get lost despite having detailed directions and after stopping and asking at least six different people a road worker called Mario asked someone if we could follow him. He was an ADT security guard and was armed, Chockey gave him a 50 rand tip(£3) you should have seen him dancing back to his van!! Eventually arrived at La Plantacion but nobody there to meet as and we couldn't get past security gates. After Chockey getting in ... read more

Today we had no real plans to do anything in particular. At breakfast we discussed taking the hop on and hop off bus tour as it headed around the entire city. You know, the big large red double decker ones, where you can't help but look touristy. I had never been on one before and Jared mentioned only experiencing it once in London. As always the price was reasonable and it stopped at some of the stops we were interested in seeing. One in particular was Table Mountain. Lucky for us the bus stopped right by where we were staying so it was extremely convenient. Once on the bus we thought instead of Table Mountain we should go to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens to see the new Canopy Tree Walk that was just built and completed ... read more

Well it's been a week. A week of adapting, grounding, and acquainting ourselves with this stunning part of the world. I have to say that out of all the places I've ever been on this planet (so far) this is the first time I've said "I could live here". That being said, I've been in a bit of a bubble here in Camps Bay. Located in the Western Cape, Camps Bay is the Kitsilano of Vancouver, the Rancho Sante Fe of San Diego (adding in of course the beauty of the 12 Apostles and the African flare). It has tourisms and international business person from around the world and it's probably one of the most safest areas for us all to be. Robyn, of Girls4Girls, a naive of South Africa, wanted to ensure everyone had a ... read more

Wow what a way to start our adventure! We left London on December 23rd with a storm forecast to hit about 4pm - our flight was due to take off at 3, so we headed to the airport with our fingers crossed. The pilot came on the speaker to say the flight may be a little bumpy until we get to cruising altitude & boy he wasn't wrong. lt was the bumpiest take off we have ever had! The remainder of the flight was pretty uneventful until we arrived in Jo'Burg to a message from Mark & Kelly to say they were delayed leaving London & had missed their connection. We replied to the message & confirmed we would still be arriving in Durban as planned. It was a good thing we did as everyone thought ... read more

Visiting Cape Town wouldn't be complete without visiting its beautiful beaches, and I wanted to soak up the sun, and drink my cocktail on no other beach then the most talked about Camps Bay. With its spectacular views of Lion's Head and the Twelve Apostles and its fine white sand its no suprise that its packed with beautiful people, especially over weekends and during holidays. Camps Bay’s long stretch of beach is perfect for sunbathing and its open flatness means that team activities like Frisbee and social beach volleyball can also be enjoyed by the more active visitors. Students such as myself love the Camps Bay vibe, with its bars and restuarants and even night clubs such as the popular renewed St. Yves along the beach, if we find something to occupy our time with or ... read more

After a quick change and freshening up from our bus tour we headed out for our final dinner together as a group. We traveled about 30 minutes up the western coastline for a beach BBQ. We enjoyed a very relaxed dinner with a spectacular view of the ocean in front and mountain range behind. The food and wine were plentiful throughout the week and tonight was no different. South Africa has the perfect climate for grape growing and any wine be it sparkling, red, white, or dessert is delicious. I just chased a rabbit... Upon the return to the hotel most of the US and UK remained spirited into the evening and in my opinion fully embraced the role of Ambassador sharing in mostly business related conversation. Great final night out!... read more

So the remainder of our work week with the Edunova trainers, teachers, and IT Entrepreneurs (young adults) was really pretty great. We let them all have a hand at working in groups to facilitate a session and try out different grouping strategies, work strategies, and reflections. The group that I mentored did an excellent job, if I do say so myself, and as I watched them lead the session and work with their colleagues, I could tell that they had internalized some of what I’d told them about working with teachers and how to lead sessions. I hope that they are able to continue with that hard work and skill acquisition as we go into week 2- where they are in charge of the entire week-long workshop for about 60 teachers from local township schools! We ... read more
