After Mashatu we flew from Joburg to Cape Town where 8 of us had rented a villa with spectacular ocean and mountain views. Each of the five days was packed full of touring this beautiful, historic part of South Africa. The home security was not as obvious as Joburg and we had no worries about walking around at night. We had both read Nelson Mandela's book "Long Road to Freedom," .... everyone should! so really wanted to see Robben Island where he was incarcerated for most of the 27 years he spent in various prisons. Our guide had spent 5 years there following the Soweto riots and was able to give us many insights into prison life. Our next leg took us back to Joburg for just one day - where Jonathan & Gaye took us to ... read more

Tuesday 26th October: I just posted that we are leaving for England on Friday, well I've just found out that soon we will be leaving to go to South Africa on November 6th! Now that is even better than cold old England! Tyler, I am so looking forward to sharing the pictures with you of the animals we'll see over there, can you believe it I'm going to see real live elephants and lions and crocodiles (although I'm not so excited about the crocodiles!). We will be staying in a nature reserve for 4 days called Kruger National Park. Look it up on the map, it's huge, one of the largest game reserves in Africa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kruger_National_Park The park has lots of trees called the 'baobab tree', these trees live for hundreds of years and are so ... read more

My first solo trip was to south Africa in 2010. I was on summer break at Staffordshire university and didnt really fancy the whole im going to ibiza to get wasted for two weeks trip. This trip changed my life forever and i will never be the same person again. So my journey starts at Heathrow airport. Im sitting alone with that nervous feeling in the pitt of my stomach. Then my flight gets called I know that in one month that ill be laughing at how nervous I was. I board the plane and get sat next to young couple who tell me they have been living in London for the past 4 years but have decided to head home. They tell me everything I need to know about the country and make me feel ... read more

The end is nearing and it definitely feels like it. Being the last few days of my vacation I’ve begun partying harder in the nights (if that is possible) but taking more relaxing days. Surprisingly, I woke up today at 10:30, only 4.5 hours after sleeping after a much intense night of partying. I grubbed on some yogurt and oats and then 12 of us headed down to play a little 6 v. 6 soccer. Everyone was stoked to play some soccer and we had a good intense game of 6 v 6 on little goals for about 90minutes. After sweating off the nights beers, some of us got smoothies, while I went and picked up some souvenirs for home. Then most of the guys went back home while Danny and I moved to the beach ... read more

Today I woke up and it was raining outside. Not just raining but torrential downpours. So we stayed at home for most of the day playing bananagrams and other games before the first game. We watched the first game at home and then took a cab to the stadium for the Portugal vs. Spain game. I was extremely disappointed by the way that the Portuguese played, but was very impressed with David Villa’s playing. I had category 1 tickets at the middle level, but since I was sitting alone second half I moved to the bottom level to right where David Villa slid to celebrate his goal. I might have been on TV again since there was a camera pointing at us and the cameraman was telling us to celebrate, which of course I did quite ... read more

It was pretty warm today. So the five of us: Evan, Orrin, Tanner, Maaike (my new dutch roommate pronounced Micah) and I spent the majority of the afternoon today on the beach. Clifton is a small town in between Sea Point and Camps Bay, with cliffs and houses/condos/apts on both sides of the road. When the tide isn't too high, there are these fabulous beaches that you walk down to. Today the waves were huge so most of Clifton's 4 beaches were taken over by higher tide and water, but we took a nice walk from Clifton beach 2 to Clifton 4 and played in the water and on the beach for a few hours. It was very nice and relaxing. I was a little chilly until I did a bit of running around, handstands and ... read more

Today had to be the best day so far at the World Cup. I have to admit after a couple days in the house here in Camps Bay I was worried that we wouldn’t be doing as much sightseeing and exciting stuff, but rather just chilling in the house watching the games and going to the games that we had tickets for. But after today I am definitely super excited and can’t believe that I get to be at the World Cup. And this next week is undeniably going to be quite exhilarating. I didn’t quite wake up for the 2am television of the NBA playoffs but woke up early enough (10am) to catch the last two quarters of the replayed broadcast in the morning. Can’t lie I was definitely excited seeing the Celtics leading ... read more

Today I woke up at 11am still loving the vacation time. Not wearing a watch I don’t really ever know what time it is. I simply tell time by what World Cup game is currently on or next. A bunch of us hit up the same Clifton Beach I went to earlier this week, while two of the guys went to hit up some internet in the town since our internet connection back home was out. We played a little soccer at the beach and enjoyed the sun and then headed back home in time for the World Cup games. Definitely living life in between the soccer games we planned out the weekend and some fun touring events based on which games were to be played on which days and who was playing. We decided to ... read more

Today I woke up around noon. After eating some homemade muffins 2 of the girls decided to go on a hike to the top of Table Mountain while most of the guys were going to head to the grocery store to get some meats to bbq in the evening. I decided to go with the girls on the hike, thinking it would be a relatively easy hike. I was definitely sadly mistaken. The sign at the beginning of the hike said it was a 2.5 hr hike, we ended finishing the hike in 1.5 hrs. Parts of the hike reminded me of the hike to half dome, very vertical and a lot of stair-like climbing the whole way. The sights of Camps Bay from the hike were pretty amazing and I got some awesome panoramic pictures ... read more

Today I woke up at 1pm, definitely loving the vacation and not having to wake up at 6:30 every morning, especially after a 5am night. The bathroom has two separate faucets one for hot water and one for old water which makes the morning rituals a little more interesting. I have to cup a little bit of cold water and then cup some hot water to get the warm water face rinse. After a longer than normal morning ritual due to the individual faucets, the girls decided to go to some super grocery store (walmart-like) and I initially thought I would go with them to get some soap and other amenities that I needed for civilized living, but decided that I would go to the beach on my first true day in Cape Town, being the ... read more
