Geo: -28.788, 32.0997The ship docked at Richard's Bay and from the balcony we could see a pretty marina. We boarded the shuttle bus expecting to be taken to such a place, but no, we ended up at yet another faceless modern shopping mall. We couldn't believe this so we asked the lady organising the bus how we could get to the waterfront. She took us to the taxi place from where the taxi took us back the same way the shuttle bus had come and dropped us off at the waterfront we could see from the ship and indeed could have just walked across to! A waste of 200 rand but served us right for not getting our bearings and checking exactly where the shuttle bus was going. The only reason for calling at this port was ... read more

Geo: -29.853, 31.0164It was already hot when we docked at Durban, South Africa in the morning. We negotiated with a local taxi driver who took us to various sights around the city. Essentially these were the sights we would have seen if we had taken the official tour at 3 times the price. Durban is not as pretty as Capetown. It has a nice front with beaches and the odd statue. The post office is a notable huge Victorian building. The Victoria market is recommended by some if you want to barter for African goods but we had a look and did not stay. Must confess that we have enough African heads, masks and elephants etc! The best place to visit is most certainly the Botanical Gardens. These are free to visit and are popular with ... read more

So...Sunday morning was in Shanghai, than on to Saigon to drop Leslie and Tiffany where they are spending few weeks. On Tuesday I was in Bangkok...time to re-register for the school, find a new flat and sort out the movers...all done! Wednesday was...business as usual in Hong Kong...and from Thursday it was Congo...for a good 11 days of great fun...ok, and some work too. Don't ask me how I deal with it...it's done, that's the most important part. Than this Sunday, it was Lubumbashi-Joburg-Durban...and the drive south to Shelly Beach. I know, one more blog about one of my preferred place in the world...for the diving, the golfing, and obviously few friends... This is hammerheads season...and I mean...middle of the hammerhead sharks season...big time! These guys are shy...and travel in groups...big groups. But at the same ... read more

Went for a day trip up to St Lucia and ended up staying overnight. It was such a beautiful little town and there was so much to see. We went on a cruise up the river and saw so many hippos. Then found a 3 bedroom house that we could stay in for only 750 rand. So we caught up with Boomerang who had also come up (but who had planned on staying away for a few days) and we all decided to stay in the house together. The next day we went to iSimangaliso Wetland park which was just up the road and saw heaps of animals including a rhino up close.... read more

Absolutely loving Richards Bay. About 10 restaurants along the waterfront and we have eaten out every night. There is also a Laundromat that will do all my washing for about $9. Very pleased with that. We organised a trip with Boomerang, Imagine and Frida to Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park and had a guided tour. Saw heaps of animals, including Wild African Painted Dogs – apparently this is a pretty rare sighting in the park as even our tour guide as very eagerly taking photos. He has worked there 5 days a week for 2 years and this was the 6th time he’d seen them – it was a pack of 14 and with a hyena thrown in for good measure.... read more

Fairly good sail across - had 12hrs of storms, lightning and strong winds. And, then also had to divert from course and head north up the Mozambique channel to avoid a low pressure system. This added about 350nm to our journey - but at least we were safe. Caught our first Mahi Mahi. Score now Phil 2 Mahi Mahi 2!! Even after loosing 2 and landing 2. Best Fish Ever. So had had lovely sailing weather, even though it was the wrong way!! Our first night out from Reunion Boomerang passed us in the afternoon, and then came back for sundowners as we were motoring and they weren't too far ahead. Then, when Steff and Ben had their baby daughter - Emma Grace, both Boomerang and Imagine joined us for sundowners to celebrate Phil becoming a ... read more

På vej mod de smukke Dragenberg Bjerge - nogen må mene at det er sammenlignelig med "Little Switzerland"! Crossing Africa møder os mange fattige landsbyer, geder, kør og en enkelt gris paa vejen. Mennesker som blaffer ses over ALT! Niels og Mette paa "opdagelse" - Yes we can do it! Efter mange timer fandt vi endelig Neptuns pool - hvor vi badede. Hobbit hytterne - Didima - er stats drevet og et socialt projekt som kun ansætter og uddanner ... read more

Hi All, we are back at Lalanathi camp after 6 weeks in Richards bay, Lalanathi is really such a nice park, it feels like home from home and the owners feel like family, such a kind and helpful family not like we experienced in Richards bay, when we arrived there they had put someone else on the site we had booked a month in advance and had a confirmation letter, this did not happen to us only, after speaking to some campers it sounded like it happens all the time, their answer to me was plain and simple, nothing we can do about it now so find another site, I will not be going back there again, but not all was bad as we met up with some of our old traveling buddys and it was ... read more

Next stop after Umkomaas was Shelly Beach. To do some more diving. This time, in Protea Banks. Protea Banks is one of the most famous spots in South Africa to do shark diving, just like Aliwal Shoal. Before arriving there, I asked a few contacts and I was recommended "Aquaplanet Dive Center". The dive center is owned and run by Kym Pollard. And so far, it's been the best dive center I've been diving with in SA (out of a total of 5 dive centers in the past month). For the whole week I stayed in a place that they recommended to me at Aqua Planet: "Cathy's Cove". This place is in a town called Margate, which is just 5km from Shelly Beach. Cathy's Cove is managed ... read more
