Hi everyone, I know it's been a while since I've emailed. We just returned from Durban/St. Lucia, where we had little to no phone/email access. So much has happened since I last wrote, so I don't know if I can give everything credit here. I won't try to, so next time I talk to everyone, I'll tell better stories :). It seems like weeks since I've been in CT. Most of the past week we spent in the small rural community of Hlabisa, where we did a short homestay, and on safari in St. Lucia. Most of what I said before about the trip still stands - it was such a strange divide between Hlabisa and going on a safari. It was all so interesting and fun though. So my homestay "granny" was Gloria Mangele, who ... read more

Sawbona and Molo from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape! I am writing to you from the beach city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa's 5th largest city. People here talk about the "big five," and they mean animals (hippo, rhino, elephant, lion, and leopard), but on the Fulbright Hays we have a different "big five," that would be South Africa's top five cities, all of which we will visit on our tour. On Sunday we landed in Durban, a center of Indian culture in the province of KwaZulu Natal, or KZN. KZN, as you might imagine, is also the native homeland of the Zulu people and the province that is hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The realities of this are striking when you consider the following information we learned in our briefing from the eThekwini Department of ... read more

Heading Northerly up the coast towards Durban we stopped at a number of notable seaside places. Kuboboyi Lodge, near Port Edward, sits on top of a small hill providing a panoramic view over the regional coastline. The place has a culinary reputation as it is owned by 2 chefs and dinners on the patio were indeed superb. It was a shame that the lodge was so isolated, otherwise we would have stayed longer. Margate is a more developed seaside town, catering to the South African market. For this reason it is usually skipped by the backpacking fraternity but we found that the touristy atmosphere made a pleasant change. The hostel was small and friendly and we agreed that the double bed was the most comfortable we had experienced in SA. My birthday coincided with Mothers day ... read more

The greyhound would only take us to Richards bay, and from there we would catch local shared taxis/combis to St Lucia changing in Mtubetube. It was great to finally catch a combi and be crammed into the back seat with the locals. Seeing the people at Richards Bay as we were waiting to leave (the buses leave when they are full) was great. We started to really feel like we were in a country that had much more for us to discover the way of local culture. St Lucia was a great stop. On the way in we saw in the distance some Hippos in the water. We had decided to take our first safari from here in place of going to Kruger - which seemed to us a little too big and expensive. Our day ... read more

From Cinsta we headed up to Durban. We considered staying around the Transkeii, but both of us were keen to get further north and into Swaziland and further north into tropical Africa. We had a great time in Durban where we were put up by Wayne and Crystal. We had met Wayne on Ko Chang in Thailand and he had wanted us to get in touch if and when we got to Durban. He has a lovely apartment backing onto a small private beach in Umslanga (that is how you say it not how it is spelt). Wayne and Crystal took us to the Indian Market by the waterfront and we hung out there, chatted and enjoyed Durban's beachfront on a Sunday afternoon. It was quite a treat for both of us to be the guests ... read more
