The moment had arrived. The Vuvuzelas had been going off from the beginning. The opening night had finished and at last it was Australia’s turn to show the world how we play football. This was the beginning of our run to become world Cup champions. (?) It started off with missing our flight from Cape Town to Durban by 2 minutes. All flights booked out we had to divert to Durban via Johannesburg. So 6 hours after we were suppose to be there, we got there. I met up with Jared and Danielle two other friends from home. It turned out the accommodation they set up was with a bloke I worked with behind the bar at my local pub 10 years earlier. What a small world that was. On the flight to Durban we met ... read more

Tim had managed to get three tickets to Germany vs Australia in Durban the day after he and Lori Ann arrived (one day after me). That gave us a full day to work out how the heck we were going to get to Durban. As expected, there were plenty of flights available at outrageous prices and no hotels admitting to having free rooms (other than the presidential suite at some place for 50,000 rand -- USD7,000). So Tiim contacted his concierge service and arranged a car. Not just any car mind you. This was a brand new Range Rover with an experienced driver and security guard. Two days before he'd been driving around the Prime Minister of Nigeria. Now he'd moved up in the world and was transporting us. For $2,000. I worked it out though. ... read more

Geo: -29.853, 31.0164After waiting so long for the World Cup, and travelling half way accross the world to watch Australia compete for it, it proved to be the most tragic anticlimax imaginable.Ironically, the 26 hours of being awake between our 2.30am pickup on Monday here and the time we got back Tuesday at 4.30am, were the worst 26 hours of the entire trip so far, for several reasons.Firstly, the cringable incompetence of the Fanatics tour group continued. I cant imagine why it was neccessary to collect us at 2.30am... some 18 hours before kick off... When they did so, we made our way almost to the airport before they realised they had to turn back and pick up other fans from a hotel even further away from the airport than we were, wasting a good 90minutes ... read more

Our Socceroos I see Tim Cahill on the pitch now I hear Kewell will be saved till late Neill and the backs are like concrete Getting into finals might be our fate It’s been an age since we’ve been here Watchin as the boys showed their winning ways Then the dive that let all our hopes down This time glory’s there to share Pim and boys have got it all right now We’re over here when you need us here Our Socceroos Slowly sneaking up, gonna bring it home When we all start celebratin Then noone will pack up and go It’s been an ... read more

Last Sunday was a special day for my church here in Durban. After the service Hope Church had a ministry fair to introduce more information on all of our ministries and to hopefully get more people involved. Before my research I served on the Hope Kids ministry and on the day of the Ministry Fair I went early to help them out since the person who runs that ministry is one of my close friends. I took photos of both the set up in the morning and the fair after church. I wanted to post these photos to my blog because it is hard to put into words how much this church and my Hope Church family means to me. I love them dearly and am so blessed to be able to have them in ... read more

Here in South Africa 2010 does not actually mean the year we are currently in, 2010 actually means World Cup soccer madness. Living in South Africa all we have heard about for the past year is 2010, who will be playing, how do we get tickets, are we ready for 2010? Now I like soccer, while I was living in Spain we watched Barcelona or Real Madrid most days of the week, but I don’t LOVE soccer. Here in South Africa people LOVE soccer. This World Cup has great significance for Africans since it is the first time it has been played on African soil. South Africa has the chance to host this huge event and show the world what an African country is capable of. This seems to be the promotional idea, but the truth ... read more

Hello Everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. It was great to get to talk to some of you during the holiday season. I had a great Christmas here in South Africa. While it didn’t feel like Christmas and it felt a bit strange to tell people Merry Christmas, it was still a really fun day. I spent Christmas Eve in my kitchen baking up a storm. I got a late start due to sleeping in a bit and getting in a quick run, but I managed in one day to make an eggnog pie, a batch of banana bread muffins, a loaf of gluten free bread, a batch of gluten free corn muffins, and 2 batches of sugar cookies. I love cooking so I had a blast with my Christmas music and my ... read more

Hello Everyone I cant believe it is already December and I have to admit I am in full Christmas mode. It wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet and I went out and got a small tree that I decorated with lights, ornament balls and bells. I even got creative and made a tree skirt out of wrapping paper and wrapped up empty boxes and books to make it look like there are gifts under there! I had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving last week. I spent the day before cooking stuffing, sweet potatoes and apple crisp but I’m not really sure why since I didn’t have any plans to have people over! On Thanksgiving Day I went to a Rotary meeting where I heard an American would be speaking, it turned out there were a couple Americans there who ... read more

Hello, This blog is a bit of a combination of photos. It starts with last Sunday when I officially became a member of Hope Church and then after the service was baptized! I am very thankful that my friend Andrea came to take photos. The baptism was wonderful, the water was a bit cold but it was not too bad. In the end after I was baptized I realized I had to jump out of the water without a ladder. I wasn’t concerned that I wouldn’t make it out but I was wearing baggy shorts and I was really praying that they would come out with me! All ended up well and I am so glad that I made the decision to get baptized with this church family that means so much to me. Directly after ... read more

On arriving in Durban I soon settled into my dorm room and got chatting to various people in the hostel and made arrangements to spend the next day with Jean, a Dutch guy. So Wednesday morning I got up and enjoyed the delectable breakfast on offer - muesli, plain yoghurt followed by marmalade on toast.... a fantastic change from fried eggs on toast! I then got my swimming stuff together and Jean and I headed out for the day with the intention of walking down to the beach and along the promenade and then visit the aquarium at uShaka Marine World. Having reached the promenade it was clear that Durban is preparing itself for the 2010 World Cup and there were extensive renovation works going on. Having walked down onto the beach Jean started taking photos ... read more
