On Tuesday, I decided it was time I took advantage of the sea and the pool and enjoyed the sunshine. That morning, when I woke up, I put on my swimsuit and headed straight down to the beach for a morning swim. Oh the water was delightful! Warm enough that it’s comfortable, cool enough it’s refreshing. However, my time in the water wasn’t so much spent swimming as it was spent jumping waves. Jody had always complained that the Caribbean waters were so still and along the coast, I’ve understood why he’s missed the surf. But the waves today were real waves - not much swimming was possible. The only thing like it I’ve experienced before has been wave pools, except there’s no break or predictability to the size of the waves. So I jumped waves ... read more

Late Friday night, I took the bus from Umkomaas to Durban and I’ve been here since. Durban is South Africa’s third largest city and sits on the shores of the Indian Ocean, about halfway up the country’s coast. I am staying at a backpackers out in an area called The Bluff, south of the city centre, because Jody, my friend from the Destiny and the Liberty, lives out here. The hostel is quite nice - quiet, only steps away from Anstey’s Beach. And it’s super accessible to where Jody lives which has been great. Saturday, he came round to the hostel to pick me up. It is so good to see him again. Then we went off to run some errands. He’d decided to host a braai (barbeque) at his home with some friends, so we ... read more

We spent a week in Durban visiting friends and family and eating and drinking non-stop. We started by making a surprise visit to a baby shower for someone we hadn’t seen for about 10 years. A lunch for 14 had been arranged at Budd’s on the Bay, a casual restaurant with a great atmosphere that overlooks the small boats in the bay. We spent our time working our way around the table making sure we got to speak to all of our camping club friends and catch up on all their news. A supper at Waxy’s for old times sake - how come wherever you travel there is an Irish pub. We had a trip to Umhlanga beach to see the sea and had lunch overlooking the Indian ocean on a lovely sunny day. Another day ... read more

After deciding to bring our flights forward, we landed in Durban with minimal sleep and looking a little pasty to say the least. Claire’s Mom collected us from the airport and whizzed us back to the house, where we began to get steadily wasted in celebration of our first day of *annual leave. (*leave lasting a year) The preceding days were much of the same and the arrival of Nicole and Simon a couple of days later bought a mixture of sight seeing, surfing and baby chat. Just a couple of highlights were collecting my new surfboard, getting stuck in the most insane traffic jam ever, eating the best sushi and deep fried ice cream of my life and throwing up while surfing the next day with a monster hangover. (Pierre - taught me a ... read more

Hey My beloved family! Man oh man how the last three months have just whizzed past! I am fully aware that they took just as much time as any three months would usually take, but it certainly did not seem that way to me! I know it has been a long time since I last dropped you an update, and I know I am not in some far off strange destination, where people drive on the wrong side of the road, cows walk in the streets, and people speak strange languages...hold the phone ...! That does sound awefully familiar. We do live in such a vibrant crazy place, boy oh boy it is fun... and challenging at times but that keeps us creative. Anyway back to the straight and narrow, so yes its been a while ... read more

“TIA: This Is Africa.” -Danny Archer, Blood Diamond Early Thursday morning I boarded a Greyhound bus and made the day-long trek across the country to Durban on South Africa’s east coast. The little red lines of the Indiana Jones map dotted as we stopped at many small towns and large cities along the coast. We stopped in Port Elizabeth, where they are building another stadium for the 2010 World Cup, and the city of George, where they played the 2003 President’s Cup that resulted in a tie after Ernie Els and Tiger Woods couldn’t finish the playoff due to darkness. The bus was cramped with people, mostly poorer people who carried on with them bags upon bags of clothes and food. I started to feel more like Steve Martin in “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” rather than ... read more

Here are some photos from our last days in South Africa. After baseball in Durban and and saying goodbye to Thanda, we rented a car and drove north to Hluhluwe National Park, a game reserve several hours north of Durban. We spent a day there, two nights, and then headed back to Durban to catch our flight back to Europe. ***Don't forget to check page 2 of this blog for the crocodile pictures!!!! As sort of a culmination of our work teaching the baseball and on our final weekend in South Africa, we traveled to Durban to take part in the school youth baseball league. The league, supported and organized by Kwazulu-Natal Baseball Association, begins in July and runs for 8 weeks. It is sort of a pre-season to the Club league that starts up after the completion of the school league—the school league gets kids into baseball, it is less competitive, and then those who wish to continue on (and who are selected by the club teams) can play in the club league. Each team represents a different elementary school from different parts of Durban, and in the school league there are 16 teams in all. What is really unique about this baseball community is its diversity; there ... read more

It can all be explained - I've come down to Durban with Dr. Tim and Rob for a two-day AIDS conference. However, that I find myself entering South Africa for the third time in a month is mind-boggling. (How I find myself staying in a old people's retirement community is comical to say the least, but at least I have had some time to think.) What do you think of when you think of viable destinations in Africa? If you're like most people I know, South Africa pops up first. Images of the cafes and bars in Capetown swirl with thoughts of bungee jumping and shark-diving. Big waves of J-Bay pound down on rhinos and leopards peeking at you from behind some bush in Kruger. Happy drives along the beautiful Garden Route, happy blacks, tour buses ... read more
