Lagavaan
This is the 4-5 foot Lagavaan that was about to enter my house last week! Hello Everyone
I cant believe it is already December and I have to admit I am in full Christmas mode. It wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet and I went out and got a small tree that I decorated with lights, ornament balls and bells. I even got creative and made a tree skirt out of wrapping paper and wrapped up empty boxes and books to make it look like there are gifts under there! I had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving last week. I spent the day before cooking stuffing, sweet potatoes and apple crisp but I’m not really sure why since I didn’t have any plans to have people over! On Thanksgiving Day I went to a Rotary meeting where I heard an American would be speaking, it turned out there were a couple Americans there who were also local NorthWesterners! After Rotary I ran some errands and got home just in time to head out to the hospital with Jean. The surgical ward was full that week and there were lots of kids to try out our new bubbles and playdoh. We had such a great time laughing and playing. I got home and started warming up food for my
Development Party
This is an old photo from a staff/student soccer part we had months ago. friend and I to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal while we watched a movie. The day after Thanksgiving I was back up and at it in Pinetown at the Super Spar handing out Rotary cards with a R2 coin on them. I was asking people if they would donate to our food drive and they could use this coin to get them started on their purchase. Many people brought us back the coin with their purchase and told us to reuse it. The food drive was a great success but I was exhausted at the end of my 3 hr shift! Since then I have been working on both my thesis and a small contract job I have for the next month or so doing some statistical analysis for a local NGO. I just got my Christmas box from my family so there are lots of gifts under my tree now and a cute stocking on my wall. I am using all my self control not to tear into the candy cane that is sticking out of the stocking since I have not been find them here yet. My TV isn’t working well lately so at night I sit in front
My Christmas Tree
This is right when I set it up of my tree listening to Christmas music and drinking mint cocoa, it’s so wonderful! I have to admit though I was a bit grumpy yesterday, I woke up and I was hot… I showered and I was still sticky….I did nothing and I broke a sweat. I think it was one of the first really humid summer days which just reminds me of how much I don’t like summer! I will try to be optimistic again but I can’t say I am looking forward to the next couple months. Thankfully it is not as humid in Cape Town so I will really enjoy my couple weeks down there in January. And for the next week I am house sitting at a home with a large pool so I do hope it stays hot enough for me to spend my days lounging on my new floaty toy! I had a funny experience last weekend without actually knowing it. I found out later that week that while I was taking a Saturday afternoon nap on the couch a 4-5 foot lagavaan which is something like a rock monitor lizard was about to come inside and join me! The house sitter had
come down into the yard and saw the giant hissing lizard about to enter my door and saw me sleeping just feet away on the couch so she scared him down into the bottom garden where she was able to get a photo before he crawled over the fence. I must have been sleeping really deep because I was not aware of any of this until my landlord showed me the photo! She said they used to see this lizard in the neighbors pool but they had never seen one so big. Apparently they are not aggressive but will bite if provoked and they make a terrible hissing noise. So in my attempt to negate the mold problem I am having in this damp climate by keeping my door open I ended up inviting a giant lizard into my home! At the end of my time here in Africa I think I will truly be able to say it was an adventure! I hope you are all getting ready for the holiday season!
Happy Holidays!
