Yo dudes - surf's up! We arrive in Jeffery's bay in the middle of the Billabong Pro surf competition. The competition is fierce on the beach as everyone tries to out-cool each other in their designer shades. As you can see I out shined them all to walk away with the coolest backpacker on the beach prize. There were things happening out on the water too ! Supertubes (yes it really is called that) produced perfect waves with amazing tubes. We had to wait some time to see anyone ride in the 'green room', as the surfers were making their way through the early rounds, and it wasn't until Kelly Slater appeared that we saw some really cool moves. Moving on down the coast Knynsa was our next overnight stop. Didn't think much of the backpackers ... read more

We drove down to the "Wild Coast", which meant we drove through large sections of the Transeki - the Xhosa homelands - hill after hill after hill covered in huge numbers of small black homesteads, and many of these hills were far too steep to farm. No idea how the people manage in these areas. The beach at Port St. Johns was lovely, we only had to share it with one other person as we played in the relatively warm waves. No development at all along this section of the coast. Lots of rumors that this would soon change. We then moved onto Cintsa, a more developed area with a few holiday homes on the beach. But the beach was enormous, really really wide and stretching far further than we could walk. Had to share it ... read more

Today was another beautiful day crisp, cool, and sunny. Left our backpacker's hostel in the morning and headed to the Knysna Elephant Sanctuary. Here, we learned a lot about the elephants of Knysna and we also got to feed and interact with them. There were 5 of them, three adults and two youngsters. Sally was the matriarch of the herd so all of the elephants followed her. Keisha was the baby of the herd at 2 years of age. and Shaka was the only male of the herd. The other two elephants were Thandi and Nandi. Whenever the elephants rubbed against each other, it sounded like sandpaper, but when they walked, it was completely silent because they have padded feet. It was amazing but sad to hear that the population of elephants dropped from 500 in ... read more

Another place, another city, another abbreviation - PE, Port Elizabeth, the "friendly city". As it was a compulsory stopover for the bus, we had no choice but to stay - however, it was hardly the most inspired venue we've visited. We'd been the only two on the bus and being 2 hours early, we were treated to an impromptu city tour. It was only 8 o'clock, but the undesirables were already out and about and there was a Moss-side feel to the streets - on reflection that is a little unfair to Moss-side. We stayed by the beach - clearly a reasonably desirable suburb when Fedders was seeking his coastal entertainment in these parts! However, a promenade, a boardwalk and performing dolphins are hardly the stuff world travelling is about. We were glad to leave PE ... read more

After the pleasant temperatures of Oudtshoorn and the Karoo, winter has set in on the Garden Route. Gardens need water and this one has had plenty in the last few days. Wilderness was effectively a long stretch of unspoiled beach, flanked by multi million rand homes overlooking the ocean. The place was deserted and at one point the population of the hostel totalled 4, including ourselves and Scooter the Jack Russell. Dolphins cruised up and down the beach and our whale sightings are increasing steadily. Knysna, apparently voted SA's fave town, was to be frank a major disappointment and was a wake up call to the world of security (if one was needed). The local cat burgalars had paid a visit to the hostel in the dead of night, outflanked some mean looking spikes and barred ... read more

So after leaving the mountains we went to shakas rock in zulu land (its all named after Shaka Zulu) we were ther for 2 days and it rained until we left then when we were travelling it was nice but we got to swim and go to the beach so it was nice. Then we went to Hluhluwe game reserve it was very nice we saw a big herd of elephants, rino's, all sorts of deer and buffalo and hyena's and tons of other stuff, we went on a night safari and got chased by a huge elephant it was fun but a little scary as he got closer and we were still turning around. we then got our own car and went to Durban and were going to stay 2 nights but after we had ... read more

More rain! Mind you, it is so green & lush here it must rain alot! It's wild here. Monkeys swinging from trees, cows on the beach...The beaches would be lovely if the sun were shining. Unfortunately Amapondo where we stayed isn't really geared up for the wet.The only dry place to hang out was the bar or kitchen. The morning after we arrived there was a break in the weather so we took our chances & walked into town. We had quite a shopping experience here in the shoprite supermarket. Security wouldn't let us take our day pack inside(?)so Deano waited outside whilst I shopped. It was your standard African supermarket, merchandise in awkward spots, someone buffing the floor under your feet whilst everyone hangs around having a chat! So, I pushed my way through, payed ... read more

Seven of us set out from Bulungula with the aim of hiking the thirty km to Coffee Bay, via Hole in the Wall. Kris and Laurel were two of our companions, and like myself and indeed our trusty guide Simon, there were a few hangovers. We were warned to keep Simon out of the shebeens we would pass as we may not make it! A shebeen is an illegal pub, or someone usually just selling beer out of their hut. From Bul' to HitW we would head inland over hills and through fields and then from there to CB we would follow the spectacular coastline. The first hour passed quickly, without any other signs of life although we were thankful when we saw the first hut in the distance where Simon said we would stop for ... read more

We arrived in Coffee Bay late Good Friday afternoon to Neils (manager) warm smile & a "welcome drink" @ Coffee Shack. After our 9hr hike a glass of red has never tasted so good!Coffee Bay was booked out thanks to the Easter weekend so thank god we had booked! We signed up for dinner as we had no provisions & it was awsome. Yummy Xsosa bread, veg soup & med pasta. Poor Deano turned green during dinner, had to excuse himself & was sick before retiring for the night. One too many shebeens on the hike! I acually felt amped after our big adventure but also went to bed early out of sympathy. It was a full moon & I could hear the drumming session from Bomvu next door. It sounded awsome & I wished I ... read more

We'd heard from one or two travellers about a place called Bulungula that although run by a white guy, was owned predominantly by the local community and in addition to only using gas and solar power, were 100% eco friendly. We decided to check it out and needed to pre book a shuttle as once again it was in very remote 4wd territory. The shuttle ride lasted a couple of hours and along the way Dave, the "whitie" told us very interesting stories of his extensive travels and of how he came to be at Bulungula including the walk along hundreds of km of coastline to find the perfect spot and the years of working with, training, educating and convincing the locals that this was a great oppurtunity for them too. We stopped to collect some ... read more
