I'm slacking on my updates.... A few weeks ago, I hiked up a mountain called the Lady's Slipper. It was awesome! In all honesty, I did try to quit a couple times, but thanks to Breymore, I kept trucking! I was all proud of myself for getting to the top - it's about 1000 ft! Then I get back to my flat and tell my roommates who tell me that it's not that high. We just ask my sore leg muscles, it's high for me. It was a very cool experience though.... read more

Lesley, Breymore, Hilary, Candy and I went on a boat tour to St. Croix Island on Sunday, Valentine's Day. It was awesome! We were out for about 3 hours. On the way out we saw a cape fur seal just floating around enjoying the water. When we got to the island, there was a school of dolphins that just surrounded the boat. I was trying to take pictures of them, but they moved so quickly in random patterns. I took over 100 pictures and managed to get some pretty good ones. None of them posed for me, but I worked with what I had. The island was awesome as well. Lots of African Penguins standing around watching the boat load of people who were watching them. We sadly learned that the population of African Penguins on ... read more

Started the weekend making an appearance at the Pearson High School Valentine's Day dance and showed some of my students my moves :) Ha! No, but it was fun and interesting to see them all out of uniform and dressed up! There were two bottles of liquor confescated and three packs of cigarettes, but I tried to tell the teachers that was nothing compared to home anymore! But, other than that, it was cute, nice decorations, the IT teacher was taking pictures, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Then, Saturday, we were picked up around 2:00 pm by Justin Bean. Justin is a 6th generation Bean and helps to run the Schotia Private Game Reserve. The land has been in his family since 1863 when his great-great grandfather farmed it. About 20 years ago, ... read more

In 1963, Kenya gained its independence from Great Britain and elected their first President. In 1964, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison and sent to Robin Island to carry out his term. In 1965, the judge of Mandela's trial wrote a book about the trial and ended the book with a question of whether he made a mistake in not sentencing Mandela to life, so that one day he could not become president, like the man in Kenya. And as we all know, Nelson Mandela was elected president in 1994 in South Africa's first democratic election. This was, of course, after he had spent 27 years in jail. Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison. He was actually set to be released in 1985. The leader at the time had ... read more

I didn't expect to be picking this up again but I am about to leave for another month as a volunteer in Joe Slovo School near Kwa-Dwesi township. I am in that state of nervous anticipation which always grips you before something which is a bit of a challenge. I am looking forward to going back to the school to see how it has changed and to meet some of the children and the staff again. I think I am going to be working in the upper part of the school this time with older children which is closer to my experience. I expect to be supporting on Life Orientation which in the context of the township is outside my comfort zone. Sometimes requirements have changed by the time you arrive in the school so I ... read more

The first question that all the kids as me is, "is Kentucky where KFC comes from?" So I had to take a picture of one of the KFC's in PE. I haven't eaten there yet, but it's on the agenda. Dancesport is going really well. I was able to teach 2 new girls the basic steps we learned last week. Of course, the students started asking me a lot of questions after that assuming that I knew everything already and I had to tell them I was learning too. It was still nice to contribute. This weekend was great! Friday I went out with some friends to Vovo Telo Pizza. It was so yummy! The pizza is cooked in a wood-burning oven and made with locally grown fresh ingredients. I had flourless chocolate cake for dessert. ... read more

This weekend was supposed to be low key but ended up being quite a story anyways. We were told by the Go Experiences lady here in PE that before we left we had to go on a “canoe safari” on the Sunday River. Chris of CrissCross Adventures started his company taking tourists and adventurers wherever they wanted to go across South Africa. His parents have a nice little Bed and Breakfast though in Addo, where the National Elephant Park is, and he decided there was plenty to do right around there so narrowed his excursions a bit. He still hosts mountain hikes, camping trips, the canoe safari that we took on Saturday, and can pretty much design a trip including whatever it is you’d like to do. We arrived around 9:00 am, a little late but ... read more

I took some pictures of the classroom I was teaching in last week. Notice the lack of technology. Since I was thrown into the fire, I did have to rely and good old fashioned lecture and a chalkboard. I tried to have the kids do an activity but they're not used to that so I learned that I have to break down basic instructions to be even more basic. Something simple like tearing a piece of paper in half took multiple instructions just because they were so organized and not used to breaking away from the regular class structure. Things like "Ma'am, which way should I tear it?" or "Ma'am, should I measure the paper first?" I also did the dancesport on Friday. I figured since I'm not athletic than maybe I could dance. I hung ... read more

Well, I started my soccer practices on Friday after school. I had about 30 girls sign up to play and I told them we would hold our first official practice next week when the boys started, but for anyone who wanted to come I would be there this week as well and I had about 9 show up. A couple girls played last year and have some potential, others however, have never played. It will be interesting trying to conduct a practice for all different levels but we’ll see how it goes. They seemed to have a great time just joking and playing around though so that’s what’s most important. There are quite a few boys that play and they were having a pick up game after school as well and after we were done with ... read more

Here are some pictures of the school and my roommates. You will see the uniforms. Some pics are from their "assemblies". Last week they mostly concentrated on getting "spirited" for the sports day on Friday. There are also some from the swim trials and from sports day. Some things I might not have mentioned: You'll see a picture of Alli's feet, this was right after the maid had swept the flat that day...yeah right. I don't think my feet will ever be clean again, even when I scrub in the shower it does nothing! And a lot of people don't wear shoes on a normal basis anyways. When we go to the pic n pay people are often walking around barefoot...and they say Kentucky is bad! Our host family (Jeannine and Brendon) are very nice. They ... read more
