On Friday we had athletics day for Pearson. We went to the university field and did track and field events for an entire school day. It was really different than anything I’ve experienced. The entire school participated! All the kids were in several events and they were really trying and encouraging each other from start to finish. There was a lot of school spirit and house support. The students are separated into 3 houses (like Harry Potter). I was initialed into Deary house after some girls asked if they could paint a green “D” on my arm in support. I helped with the boys’ high jump. It was a long day sitting out in the sun and the wind was going like crazy, but 3 layers of sunblock during the day saved me. They did a ... read more

Greetings from the professional surfer and safarian! I'll start from Friday! Sports day was quite interesting and warm! The houses all did more skits/spirit starter to kick off the day. One team even drove a fire truck onto the field! The kids were to continue cheering all day and there was a winner chosen for the best House spirit. I'm not quite sure who it was yet, I was just impressed that in the 90 degree weather they were all jumping up and down and still yelling. Apparently though they didn't impress everyone because some of the students were complaining today about how much it died down after the beginning, I didn't notice! I was in charge of high jump, which basically just meant that I measured the stick to make sure it was right. I ... read more

I'm at school now during a break. This school is awesome! They are very focused on the "whole pupil" as far as encouraging content, culture, language, sports (lots of sports), art...oh my gosh, it's amazing! They also don't call the kids "students," they say "learners." On Friday they are having an athletics day where everyone attends. "Athletics" covers all the track and field stuff from what I've learned. Everyone from the school participates - even the student teachers, like me, who will be records keepers. The idea of these types of events is to build community among the students and teachers. At first I thought, crap, I can't do sports and this is taking away from a regular school day but the community and team building is an obvious benefit to this school between students and ... read more

Well, I’m in my 3rd full day in South Africa. The trip went smoothly - there was the kid who pooed his diaper sitting behind me on the plane from Cincinnati to Atlanta, but that’s just my luck. The 15 hour flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg was longer than it sounds. The man sitting next to me was very nice and showed me how to work the tv screen and stuff like that. Thank goodness for those! I watched several movies and shows because I could not sleep more than an hour or two. It was nice to land and be able to walk around again. The first night was hard. The first full day was very hard. My initial reaction was that I was stupid for wanting to do this program and would leave within ... read more

Hola! This happened back in the beginning of November but I havent had access to the internet so I am adding entrys now... So the last thing i did in Storms River was going on that horse ride. It was good fun apart from when the horses escaped...but luckily we found them again a bit further up the road. I then tried to get myself to Durban as qhick and cheaply as possible..it proved pretty tough. After many phone calls and dramas I managed to get a ride by two dutch girls to Port Elizabeth. We had a pizza (a very good one I might add, and it was even without chilli?!?!) on the Boardwalk which is the touristy marina kind of place and then they were sweet enough to let me stay in their house. ... read more
