Faites bien attention à vous, ... read more

Now that we are off the truck we have to start dealing with things on our own again. We had planned to slow things down a little. The truck was good but it did keep us moving. Travelling through from Cairo about 12,000 km there were not that many opportunities to back off and take it easy . We had been looking to Cape Town as a place where we would sort a few things out and re-group. All of this travelling can be tiring and you really need to give yourself a bit of 'holiday' sometimes. In this post I will talk about South Africa generally, our time in Cape Town where we spent a total of 8 days and then our trip across to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. South Africa is a ... read more

This weekend turned out to be quite the African adventure. We boarded the BazBus at 6:45 on Friday morning, still in the dark and all ready for a long (but we didn’t realize just how long) trip. I thought that maybe I would sleep on the bus but the scenery was so beautiful I was perfectly content just gazing out the window. There were two boys on the bus from Britain who were just touring South Africa for about 6 months, an older man from Australia, and then a very strange woman whose picture I will include just for laughs. I’m not really sure what she was doing but I think that she had all the clothes that she owned, on! The BazBus drives up and down the coast of South Africa all the way from ... read more

Well it's Thursday afternoon and I have 9 days left in South Africa. I'm both excited and apprehensive, one part of me just wants to get on that plane whereas another wants to stay and prolong this time as much as possible. So far I feel quite confident in all my preparations and on Tuesday morning I will be meeting 4 other people from Port Elizabeth who will be going over at the same time. A familiar face can be priceless in a completely foreign country! So this is short and sweet and my start to blogging. Here's to a FANTABULOUS year ahead! Ciao Ciao BYE!... read more

These past couple of weekends have been pretty low key. The next month is about to get hectic with travel though so I guess it was nice to have some stress free time. Friday, February 19th a couple of my roommates and I headed in town to a professional Cricket game. Cricket is a very traditional South African game of bowls, overs, hits, runs, wickets, and outs. I’m not really even sure how to go about explaining it, you really have to watch and be explained the game at the same time. The traditional game lasts for hours. They play for a few hours in the morning, stop for lunch, and then continue play again in the afternoon…crazy. There is also a 5 day game where one game is played from about 10 in the morning ... read more

I’ve told lots of you a few of the funny and interesting differences between here and home but here are just some of the things I’ve noticed. At School • Students wear uniforms • Girls must wear their hair up, can not wear make up, earrings (except studs), bracelets, or necklaces • Boys must wear a belt and have their shirts tucked in at all times, their sideburns can not go past a certain part of their ear, their hair must not be long enough to grab a significant part of, no earrings, and they must be clean shaven • The students also wear nametags • They have tests every Wednesday, in a different subject each Wednesday • Their grades are comprised of nothing but one class tests, one grade test (Wednesday tests), and one project ... read more

Absent on Thursday Although I dosed myself up with various things - got some Vick and inhaled it and put it on my -I still woke up with no voice at all this morning so could hardly go in and do oral work with six groups of Grade 2. I am trying resting it for today in the hope it will come back. It is a rather essential requisite for what I am doing. I went out and got a local paper - the hotel don’t get them for you and you have to grab one of the few that come in and we are always in a rush to be ready for a 7.15 pick up. There were various meetings and visits from the education off ice in our first week and “seven hour teaching ... read more
