We arrived at Jeffrey's Bay, or JBay as it's affectionately known, in the late afternoon. Our accommodation at Dreamland was a beachside studio flat with a gorgeous seaview, right on Supertubes. We had been lucky to get a room as we arrived in the middle of the Billabong Pro Surf Championships and our flat was situated right next to the stands and judges at Supertubes. We were only staying that evening and left the next morning, so we didn't catch that much of the action, mainly surfers practising on the early morning waves. The town was rammed with surf stores and is great for snapping up surf gear bargains. It would have been nice to have stayed longer and hopefully seen more of the competition. ... read more

I didn’t make the 2:30pm bus to J-Bay I was originally planning on taking (I was enjoying the Knysna waterfront too much) so I caught one at 4pm instead, which unfortunately meant getting into J-Bay soon after dark. The owner of the hostel I was going to stay at, Jeffrey’s Bay Backpackers, came to fetch me at the bus stop. The hostel is a very cute little place on the downtown end of Jeffrey’s Bay, and they have great facilities - it really feels more like staying in your own house than a hostel. There’s a comfy living room with a satellite t.v., huge kitchen, laundry, and very nice bathrooms with a bathtub! And the owners, Anders and his wife, are super nice. I dropped off my bags and then wanted to head out to get ... read more

Hi all, How are you? Hope you are enjoying the spring, is spring on its way now? Well it better be, because I don't know how I'll be able to handle cold weather when I get back! After spending nearly 3 months in the sun.. oooh, I don't want to come back yet! Can I stay just a little bit longer? I love traveling soooo much, it's the best thing I have ever done and I will definitely do it again soooooooon! I think South America next or parts of Africa. Anyway, what have I been up to the last week or so? I know, I'm terrible at keeping up with this blog, Sorry I get a bit lazy.. After Cairns I flew to Perth. Right across Ayers Rock where I was suppose to stop and ... read more

After two short and painless flights I arrived in Port Elizabeth and was met by Trish, Charet and Sammy. Sammy is a delightful 3 year old who ran across the airport and gave me the biggest hug. I thought this was very cool considering the last time I saw him was over two years ago and he couldn't even walk or talk. After getting all my luggage we hit the road for Jeffreys Bay. Jeffreys Bay is a surfing hot spot around July when it hosts a huge Billabong surfing competition. The population explodes for the month and then again in December for annual summer vacations. It is beautiful. Golden beaches, great waves and alot of sun...Perfect combo! The plan for South Africa was to stay with Sam and Charet for a few days then meet ... read more

The title, that means Merry Christmas in the shona language, which is what all the guys we work with speak because they're all from Zimbabwe (or Zim as they say). We spent Christmas eve just hanging out with a couple of the guys we work with, Cleytus and Sheldon, and we watched Christmas with the Kranks on sateliete tv! lol Sheldon made us "mealie pap" which is basically this bland sticky stuff... kinda tastes like rice but i'm pretty sure its made from maize (corn). Mealie is the staple here, its like the equivalent of rice in asia or bread in europe. And we brought over a cake and chocolates for christmas presents! We woke up Christmas day, and wandered over to the Anglican church next door. It wasn't a fantastic service, but we did get ... read more

Yo dudes - surf's up! We arrive in Jeffery's bay in the middle of the Billabong Pro surf competition. The competition is fierce on the beach as everyone tries to out-cool each other in their designer shades. As you can see I out shined them all to walk away with the coolest backpacker on the beach prize. There were things happening out on the water too ! Supertubes (yes it really is called that) produced perfect waves with amazing tubes. We had to wait some time to see anyone ride in the 'green room', as the surfers were making their way through the early rounds, and it wasn't until Kelly Slater appeared that we saw some really cool moves. Moving on down the coast Knynsa was our next overnight stop. Didn't think much of the backpackers ... read more

After the pleasant temperatures of Oudtshoorn and the Karoo, winter has set in on the Garden Route. Gardens need water and this one has had plenty in the last few days. Wilderness was effectively a long stretch of unspoiled beach, flanked by multi million rand homes overlooking the ocean. The place was deserted and at one point the population of the hostel totalled 4, including ourselves and Scooter the Jack Russell. Dolphins cruised up and down the beach and our whale sightings are increasing steadily. Knysna, apparently voted SA's fave town, was to be frank a major disappointment and was a wake up call to the world of security (if one was needed). The local cat burgalars had paid a visit to the hostel in the dead of night, outflanked some mean looking spikes and barred ... read more
