28/01/09 (cont.) - After Monkey Land we drove on and spent the night at Jeffrey's Bay in a nice little place right on the water (though we didn't have a water view). The great thing about this place was that a cat lived there who was not allowed in the owner's unit as she had two dogs, so after I patted it, it decided to sleep with us.... read more

Friday 8th February Sorry this post if at least 5 days late. Internet in the Transkei was appalling and nowhere has Microsoft word or USB ports so have had to wait till now! We arrived in Jeffery’s bay, at Island Vibe around 8pm. The bar was already full and we had missed supper so it was a bowl of cereal for that night! The Brazilian guys and Kirsten from Norway were staying at Island Vibe as well and it was nice to be back with them laughing about their experiences at the Bloukrans bungy. On Friday morning we all decided that we’d go on a township tour. The tour guide was a guy called Cassidy, Cas for short. He was 31 and had previously been a member of staff at the backpackers. He lived in the ... read more

Braai, Biltong and Croc Circles Jan. 14, 2009 Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa About a week ago, Sarah and I were sitting under a tree taking a break from the sizzling African sun. In a heat-induced daze, I glanced down and thought I was hallucinating. On the tops of my feet were a half-dozen dime-sized brown circles. I started to smile. Then a giggle. Then a full-blown laugh. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There before me, staring back up, was a sign from the heavens. All of my hard work since leaving London -- two weeks in the Corsican mountains, two months at sea on yacht Cleone, a month and a half in South Africa -- was complete. I now had a Croc tan. The sun (lots of sun, apparently) had made its way through ... read more

Arriving in J-Bay is like the feeling you get before going to watch a film everybody is talking about, but with mixed reviews. When you travel to far corners of the earth and mix with local surfers, its J-bay that they all know about and long to visit. On previous visits I failed to see what all the fuss was about and was hoping for an opportunity to experience the magic the place is famous for. We arrived early in the morning after our over night stay in PE. The signs were good as everybody else on the Baz bus had opted to stay at the well know Island Vibe. Having stayed there before and looking to get away from the crowds we decided to stay at Ubuntu backpackers. This was already half the battle won ... read more

So a few weeks from my last entry, and i've managed to make it down to the eastern cape to Jefferey's bay - some kind of surfing mecca. Down the east coast has been fun if a little tiring, St. Lucia in Kwa-Zulu Natal, down to durban for a few days, on to Coffee Bay( surfing outcrop on the wild coast), on to quite a boring port elizabeth, and here to Jefferey's bay complete with surfing factory outlets, surfer dudes, so on and so forth... my purpose of South African travel seems to have taken a slight turn from original plans... not bad in a way but deviates from what made me interested in South Africa in the first place. The idea of lots of 'foriegn travellers' going down the coast for hostel stays and party ... read more

Today is Jeffrey's Bay. "J Bay" is known for surfing. I'm booked at a hostel right on the beach, complete with a surf school. Last night when I arrived, there was a beautiful view of the moonlit beach and ocean waves under the stars to greet me. I sleep horribly at the hostels. I just wake up constantly, every hour, all night. Apparently I'm a light sleeper after all those months in quiet pitch-black rocking cabins of the ships! I don't think I've slept solidly since I arrived in the country, save maybe when I was staying at Jackie's. This morning, I had booked myself a surf lesson. I seriously considered cancelling. My back hurt so badly from kayaking yesterday and I was really irritable. But the sun was shining, the waves were crashing and I ... read more

The weather turned awful today so we didnt have our surfing lessons as planned. We did make a good start in the morning by walking for about 2hours along the never ending beach line. As it was cold and the town is quite frankly awful we hid in our hostel for a while before heading to Cape St Francis. The kite surfers were out so we watched the Dude's do what they do best. We are looking forward to leaving tomorrow for the Addo Elephant Park in search of GAME.... read more

We rose early for our adrenalin fix of the trip - well my legs were shaking! At 7.30am we embarked on a tree top safari where we zip lined from one tree to another at some stages we were 19m above the forest floor. Dont worry it was safe and eventually I began to enjoy the trip. The best bit was learning about the tree of the ancient forest and how the eco systems works - all very eco tourism but very good in all. After this we went to the storms river mouth where it hits the Indian ocean but where disappointed that the suspension bridge was shut. So we headed to the surfing capital of SA - Jefferys Bay... read more
