Happy new year!! After three days in Cape Town it was time to wind our way down the Western Cape and explore the Garden route. The flashpacker experience that was Ashanti Hostel was left behind as we reaquainted ourselves with cooking out a truck, makeshift toilets, sleeping in a wet tent and all the many other delights of the camping experience! First stop was Mossel Bay - after several hours on the bus we were keen to get off and explore. Unfortunately we were greeted by lashing rain - quite an adjustment after getting used to the stifling heat of the Namib desert! After a quick scout around we were all a bit damp and keen to drive are way out of the grey clouds - not that Claire seemed to aware of the weather as ... read more

Saturday (17/7/10) Having heard Kelly Slater was in the first few heats of the Billabong Pro we were up with the sun and made the short walk to Supertubes. We found a good spot on the sand and settled in for a day of surf watching. It was a beautiful sunny day, a number of Aussies were in the morning line up including Taj Burrows, Adam Melling, Mick Fanning and the legendary Kelly Slater. We were treated to an awesome show, unfortunately a couple falls and too few good waves saw Kelly crash out of the finals but Taj, Adam and Mick all go through as the organisers raced through the heats keen to host the final Sunday whilst conditions were predicted to stay good. We called it a day heading back to the backpackers, picking ... read more

First, just want to make a comment regarding internet access the last few days. The hostel in Umzumbe did not have any wireless connection and last night we just went online to pay some bills and try to find a hostel. When adding a blog, it does take some time for us to add the photos and arrange them in order. So although we have been writing the daily blog and taking some photos, we have not been able to post them every day. Today, we drove from Cintsa to Jeffrey's Bay, stopping in Port Elizabeth to retrieve our Brazil - Holland tickets. The drive was long, as we left around 11am and arrived at Jeffrey's Bay around 7pm. The weather was really nice, quite warm, and the drive was neat once again because we had ... read more

July 1st-3rd (I’m a bit behind on my writing so I’ll condense a few days into one post) The day after saying goodbye to Luke, Hayley and Mike, another trip by car started. Kieron and a couple of his friends had tickets to the quarterfinal match between Holland and Brazil, so they needed to get to Port Elizabeth. They had invited me to go with them on the road trip, which was to be along the Garden Route, the southern coastline between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. The drive was another great one, mountains that looked like teeth coming out of the earth were everywhere, surrounded by green pastures and farmland. Pete was our driver and with him was his lovely wife Carrie (hope I spelled that correctly). Since Pete and Kieron are avid surfers they ... read more

March 25 Today when Entienne showed up I told him I wantted to cancel the whole surf camp. I explained my reasoning and he seemed really chill and relaxed about it. So I had to pay him 400 Rand, 350 for the taxi and then 50 for the breakfast. Plus I'm sure I lost my deposit. But overall I should be able to save a few 100 so whatever.  Anyway after I made breaky we Stephan, Karmin, Emil and myself headed out to Cape St Francsis to surf seal point. It was a fun little point break with a cool white light house at the point. There were a few guys out there when we got there but they left shortly. It was maybe waist to chest high few bigger sneaker sets. It was good fun. ... read more

After our long and stressful drive (at night) with roads not well marked we arrive in J'bay and checked into the Backpackers here. It was umm... interesting complete stains our sheets and mosquitoes that kept us up all night. But hey we are on vacation. We got up that morning and headed to the beach and met some South Africans that challenged us to beach volleyball. After three hours, we were tired and burnt. The sun here is so much stronger than back home. Even with sunscreen on we looked like lobsters. The rest of the day we took it easy and picked up a bottle of pinotage (got to love the cheap fantastic wine here) and headed out to Supertubes to watch the real surfers for a sundowner. Unfortunately there were no surfers dolphins close ... read more

its been a month, which obviously means im having a good time. and that i may not remember some things as my brain doesnt go that far back. after ridign osteriches i have a recollection that we headed to plattenburg.. but only for a swift cocktail and to watch the sun set, we were going to stay there but didnt have time in our tight schedule. so it was onwards to jefferys bay, sverving several roundabouts and getting a tad lost before we finally found the backpackers on a residential road. but very ncie it was too. and we headed out for a bite to eat.. at the take away pizza.. coz thats all that was open. first impressions.. jefferys bay was a lot smaller than i thought. just one strip (road, too long to walk ... read more
