After saying our tearful, emotional goodbyes to the Acacia folk who were splitting up themselves and heading onto Cape Town or Jo'Burg via Botswana and Namibia on the gestapo truck, we landed in Jo'Burg via the luxury of British Airways from an airport that resembled nothing more than a small council building with a bit of a road attached that planes used as a runway every so often. We were met my my cousins Peter and Andrew (who was getting married and I'd not seen for 16 years. It was emotional) and Andrew's wife to be Christel, who's wedding we were in town for. We headed out for a meal that evening with the wedding party and then on for a few drinks at Jolly Roger. 4 doubles with mixers, a single and a beer all ... read more

A NOTE ABOUT MY TRAVELBLOG I know that the dates are all out of sync and I am entering most of my stuff now that we are back, but I actually for the life of me can't really remember the dates and when/where,I was on holiday..forgive me,also I find it much much easier to post my entries on my big PC instead of the tiny laptop and having to resize photos etc. So yeah, here goes! Jeffreys Bay means surfing and surfing means Billabong!!!! and Billabong means the Factory store!!! Let me give you an example, there is this MASSIVE building in the centre of town, jam packed with Billabong stuff,at insane prices. DO NOT buy surf clothing ANYWHERE ELSE EVER AGAIN, go to Jeffreys Bay, you can get it for less than half the price. I swear!!! ... read more

So it has been a while since I have written an entry. My apologies, I have been keeping active and kind of forgot to write my blogs. It has been about a month since I last updated everyone on my life. I’ll start by finishing my fall break. After we left the AIFS group I rode tripped around Africa with four of my friends, Emilee, Courtney, Sarah, and Bethany. The first day was Emilee’s 23rd birthday… so we went SKYDIVING! The day started out with some minor to major delays. There were seven of us going skydiving and only one car (a little chico). We ran to the ATM to grab cash quickly, but for some reason this took over an hours. I have no idea why. Once we all had our thousand rand we all ... read more

Our second stop was Jeffrey's Bay. This place must be where all good surfer's go when they die. A small town nestled up against the beach in pretty much the middle of nowhere with not much more to offer than an awesome beach, a little town designed to service nomad surfers and if the wind blows right, and the stars align, the perfect wave. We pulled into town and were directed to Island Vibe backpackers. A clean room, an awesome view of the beach, and a laid back vibe were good medicine after a day on the road. We settled into a great evening of cold Castle Lagers and surfing stories served up by the fairly cosmopolitan bunch of surfers from around the world on a pilgrimage to test their skills on one of the three ... read more

This weekend I went to Jeffreys Bay, which I guess is one of the top surfing spots in the world. A bunch of us got a ride with the Gaol, and we saw rhinos and a ton of baboons along the road on the way there. We stayed at a backpackers place called Island Vibe. It was a really cool place; it looked like some surfer hangout right out of a movie. It was right on the beach, which was awesome. The rooms were all booked, so the Gaol lent us some tents to bring and we camped in the courtyard. The only drawback to the tents was that they were located right next to the bar, so it was pretty noisy at night. I was so tired though that even with the noise it didn’t ... read more

Classes are now well underway, I ended up getting everything that I needed, although two of them are independent study so I still don't really feel like I'm in school. Last night I started a Xhosa class, which I feel is going to be really challenging. Luckily most of the students from California are also in it, so I have plenty of people in Annie's Cove to study with. I'm also taking an intro mediation class which I think will be really interesting as well as useful in the future. Class discussions are difficult for me, due to all the strong accents, I have trouble understanding people but I think it will get easier with time. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan is largely an international university, with students coming from all over Africa as well as other parts ... read more

I've just stayed 4 days in Jeffreys Bay which is basically the surfing capital of south africa, I stayed in a hostel called Island Vibe which is right on the beachfront and is the best place to stay. Unfortunately the first night I got there there was a mess up with the booking and they had booked someone else in instead of me so they put me in the adjacent language school accomodation which turned out brilliantly, had a whole apartment to myself with stocked kitchen and everything! So I made myself hot chocolate and watched The Bodyguard on tv which was a bit of a luxury. I've spent quite a few days relaxing on the beach but it's nice to sit down and just watch a film, haven't done that for a while!! I moved ... read more

I just cannot get my head around this Rainbow Nation they call South Africa. It is perhaps the strangest country I have ever visited. In fact, it is more like many countries, all overlapping and sharing the same geographical space, yet interacting very little. Sometimes it feels like Australia, sometimes it feels like the US, sometimes it feels like Britain, and sometimes it feels like, well, an African country. There are plush shopping malls full of affluent white shoppers, and barred-up corner stores selling mealie maize to queues of poor Africans. There are super-smooth highways carrying along the wealthy locals in their BMWs and Mercs, and potholed country roads, where car-less locals have to trudge from home to work, and back again. There are beachside suburbs loaded up with razor-wire-surrounded McMansions, and raggedy villages of mud ... read more

Hi there! So... life in JBay. Frantic, heaps of fun and very, very drunken! I went for that trial at the Fish Restaurent (3 Fat Fish) and got the job. Not bad going considering I'd been there about 4 days. For the next week I was working either a day or a night shift at the restaurent and spending more than I was earning at the Island Vibe backpackers bar. Thats the only problem hanging out with travelers all the time, they're great fun buts thats because they get drunk all the time! (Plus it didn't help that I was getting paid- or more like a small donation- 25 Rand for a shift. That wont even buy you 3 beers in South Africa. You work purely for tips out here. Which apperently come Christmas is great ... read more

Hello. I've now had a grand total of 2 surfing lessons!! Yay! I had my second lesson in Cape Town (Muzinberg Bay) Lots of standing up, my friend Sarah was awesome, I can't go in a straight line!! But thats fine cos I have the next 3 months to practice!! Then I said my goodbyes to Sarah Sunday night. She got a cab to the airport and I got a coach to J Bay. I'm now in Jeffrey's Bay which is about 10 hours up the East coast from Cape Town. Cape Town wasn't very practical for surfing as all the beaches are way out of town and there is practically no public transport (not sure how they are going to cope with the world cup!!) so without a car your up the creek without a ... read more
