From Coffee Bay our next stop was Hogsback. We discovered while already being in the bus that arriving the same day in Hogsback was not possible, as only one shuttle a day at midday goes from East London to Hogsback. Therefore, we were forced to stop in East London, which is a big city with not much to do. But it wasn't too bad, as we met a local guy, Richard, who teached us some djembe. The next day we arrived in Hogsback, where we stayed in the backpackers called "Away with the fairies". This place is famous because of it's bath on the top of the mountain with an amazing view. We enjoyed this bath (the water was heated by a fire) together with a glace of wine and a sunset! Unfortunately, the weather was ... read more

I use Dropbox and Facebook mainly for anything to do with some motorbike experience. When I started to receive invites from DropBox because they “miss my presence” it was suddenly a stark reminder that a good bike trip was overdue. Although riding solo is not something which stops me easily, it is more fun to have some company and therefore I threw out the gauntlet or invitation to Marius (Colleague and friend) who accepted immediately. Marius immediately started to look for accommodation while I was still thinking about where to go, but at least we narrowed it down to something around Hogsback, 130 km from East London. Things developed fast and soon we were three people with the possibility of one more and the initial one day changed to staying over for two nights. A Promise ... read more

Me and Izak van der Ham left East London in calm and relatively good weather conditions. Izak has planned this trip and after it was cancelled the previous week-end, there was no stopping us now. I forgot my rainsuite in my eagerness. Rain was the last thing on my mind. Boring tar road from East London to King William's Town and then more tar road pass Dimbaza and then right to Keiskammahoek until the left turn off to The old monument- The Ntaba Kandoda National Monument from the old Ciskei days- gravel at last! We had some coffee at the old monument and then took some nice gravel roads on the way to Seymour.Rain starting to fall continously now and the roads were getting slippery in some places and the conditions misty. On one downhill we ... read more

We rose early and set off with our packed lunch and first aid kit for our day of hiking. The mornign started well by climbing down through a forest on well marked paths. It was drisseling a bit but we didnt really feel it as teh forest was so thick. A bit spooky really. The trail was interesting as there were information signs every now and again about various species we encountered. After about 1.5 hrs we reached teh big tree. It was 800 years old and massive -m very impressive. We then marched on to our next goal - a waterfall. It took us about another hour to get here. It was basically a sheer cliff of rock out of teh forest - unbeleiveable how nature forms such a dramatci landscape. Feeling please with our ... read more

Today we left our lovely guesthouse and headed into the mountains again. It was a good drive and all the roads were tarmac. Our destination is Hogback but the hostel is called Away with the Faires and is basically is a a big hippy retreat in the middle of no where which is trying to sell out on the Lord of the Rings theme. We are staying a in a hut called Bilbo!! You may ask why we are headed here....... well the Hogsback are famous mountian ridges and we intend to hike up them tomorrow. Watch this space if tha faires havent got to us first! Peace out.... read more

3 Nov - early start for a MAMMOTH drive. We leave at 7am and don't arrive at Hogsback until 13 hours later. However, picturesque drive along the Wild Coast through the Eastern Cape, the poorest region of South Africa. We reach 'Away with the Fairies' hostel at Hogsback, in the dark about 8.30pm. Errol and I do the tent demonstration for the new guys then head to the bar for a quick dinner. The drinking then starts in ernest...having had a Savanna on the truck I continue my African drinks of choice - Windhoek lager, a few Jagers (of course!) some springboks and lots of amarula. The bar staff (Andre, Nacho & Co) are totally crazy but great guys. Our crew stay out quite late partying but eventually its just Errol, Janet, Nav and I who ... read more

Traveling from J Bay to Hogsback was interesting, the roads to Hogsback are “rural” and it was a bumpy ride towards the end, but we finally arrived at Away With The Fairies Backpackers. Hogsback is rumored to be the place that inspired J R R Tolkiens Lord of the Rings. The 3 peaks (1836 m, 1 824 m and 1 937 m) in the pictures are responsible for the places' name as they look like the backs of the bristly hogs(pigs) that roam the area at night. The backpackers is set on a steep hillside opposite the 3 Hogs backs (see pics). We walked out to the Viewpoint when we arrived, which is basically just a path out on a steep cliff, even after the bungy jump, I was wary of it and stood back!!! But the view was ... read more

A couple weekends ago I went camping with the Rhodes Mountain Club. We went to Hogsback - a beautiful area of mountains and forest, which supposedly inspired Tolkien to write Lord of the Rings. The name comes from the shape of the mountains: they look like the backs of hogs (apparently lol). We hiked up Hog 1 and camped at the top. I was excited that we were right next to a couple streams where we could refill our water bottles with African mountain water (don’t worry Mom, it was safe!) The trail we hiked was covered in these beautiful orange flowers. When I asked what they were called everyone answered: “weeds” haha. I eventually found them on Google - they’re called wild dagga. We were pretty lucky weather wise. It was cloudy and cool, and ... read more

After leaving P.E. we got on the Baz Bus at 6:30am the next day!! We travelled 3 hours to a coastal town called East London where we had to wait at a hostel to be picked up by a shuttle bus to take us out to Hogsback which is 3 hours inland from the coast. We ended up waiting for 2 hours but it wasnt too bad because there was a free pool table! Our shuttle turned up.....a little white van which looked like it was about to break down at any moment but somehow it managed to get us out to Hogsback where we are staying in a hostel called Away with the Fairies. Hogsback is actually where J.R.R. Tolkien got his inspiration from to write The Hobbit and then went on to write Lord ... read more

It's shanos b'day and weve just got back from a walk in the mountains next to a village called hogsback which apparently inspired tolkein to create hobbiton. went past a few waterfalls and went for a dip in one, had a nice cold beer and played some tunes was beautiful. been quite hetic last week, i lost a toe whilst cage diving with the sharks then lost a finger whilst surfing! still well fun though. had a couple of huge piss ups in a surf hostel, fish bowl funnels galore. Went on an amazing township tour where we went to a school and all the kids were actually running up to us and huging us, quite somthing. then had another big night out in a casino where we all made 100 rand! (thats only about 8 ... read more
