Nastesti taxikar mu to vysvetlil. Do Ouzudu jsme dorazili nekdy okolo poledne, udelali si kratkou prochazku v vodopadu, ktery opravdu stoji za to, dali si obed (tradicni marocke tajine) a jeli dal. Bylo ... read more

SALAM again from Marrakesh What else did I see and experience in the pink city? JARDIN MAJORELLE Our first attempt to reach the Jardin Majorelle by foot on our second day in town, got as lost and back to the center of the Medina. So, today we got smarter and took a cab. French painter Jacques Majorelle spent forty passionate years to create this enchanting garden in the heart of the “Ochre City”. But it wasn't until famous designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé, bought the Jardin Majorelle in 1980, saving it from becoming a hotel complex, that the recent history of the garden began. They revived the garden, added to the collection of plants, and made the Villa Oasis their home for years. When Yves passed away in 2008, his ashes were ... read more

THEN… I took a “sip” of Morocco some 10 years ago, when I crossed the Strait of Gibraltar by ferry, from Spain to decadent Tangier, for just a day. I was sick and nauseous most of the day, and walking under the scotching sun, followed by insistent sellers who glued to you for up to an hour, wasn’t pleasant, and not a way to judge the country. One thing that fascinated me then, was watching locals coming in and out of what seemed like a hole with a little entrance, a couple steps down from the street level. That was the public “bakery”, where people came to leave their bread to bake, and them came to get it. How did they know whose bread belong to them? Each family had a symbol “stamped” on their bread, ... read more

Geo: 35.7728, -5.8235Okay, today is when we actually set foot on the fourth continent. Hopped the ferry at 10:30 arriving in Tangier at 12:00. We traversed the Straight of Gibraltar (waters where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet). The seas were confused near land (means waves not moving in a consistent train), especially at Spain. The 500 of so foot ferry rocked a good deal, which surprised us given the size of the boat. Yet, we made it unscathed. Tangier is not the quant little village some may expect. Much of it is a relatively large vivacious city. Most of our time, however, was spent in the Medina (old town), which very well could fit with expectations both in terms of the town and the behavior of the inhabitants. There were a great number of small vendors ... read more

Morocco Ouzoud Falls Great trip With regards to escaping Marrakech, there are a large group of journeys and day excursions to look over. Morocco is a huge nation with a rich and different geography, so it appears a disgrace to stay in only one spot. All over the place we looked in Marrakech, somebody was putting forth journeys, and not these looked excessively real. I was really happy we booked our own ahead of time, through Expedia, with the goal that I knew the organization, Sahara Tours International, could be trusted. I additionally get the feeling that, shockingly, we got a less expensive arrangement by booking ahead of time, so all in all I'd suggest it. We had a genuinely ambitious start, meeting the minibus at 7:30am at the Djemma El Fna. Our little gathering was ... read more

Holding the enviable position of No.3 in Tripadvisor's “Top 25 Destinations for 2016”, Marrakech had been high on our list to visit. We decided to take advantage of some cheap (Ryanair) flights from London Stansted to travel first to Morocco, then via Spain, to our final destination of Latin America. Our journey began in style, with an all-nighter in the 24-hour cafe at Liverpool Street, after some farewell drinks with our brothers. We took the first bus to Stansted at around 4am for our early morning flight to Marrakech. In total, we spent a week in Morocco, staying in Marrakech and Fes, although we also passed through Rabat and Tangier, and visited Ouzoud. Being just a half-hour ferry ride from Europe, and with some independent travel information available on the internet, we didn’t expect too much ... read more

After many false starts as to what to do with our spare days we decided on Morocco. We booked a tour which would give us a private driver and guides in each city. We flew from London to CASABLANCA. A rather hair raising drive from the airport to our hotel. We were to learn that one of the things the French gave to Morocco was their road system. Major intersections are like driving around l'arc d'triomphe. There are rules but they are flexible. The first sight that we were greeted with appeared to be a Christmas tree but instead we were told it was just a co-incidence as Morocco's colours are red and green and so the decorations just looked Christmas- like. Picked up by our driver Karim at 9 o'clock the following morning. Very quiet ... read more

Wrapping up Morocco inMarrakesh makes sense. If you haven't seen it, felt it or eaten it yet as you travel around Morocco, then you will find it in Marrakesh.True, there are no High Atlas Mountains here but the spices, food, medina, all of the goods that you might have missed and all of the goodies that you might want to try again – they are all here. Our accommodation for this last few days was just a bit more luxurious than the norm. The Hotel Gomassine is in the French quarter of the city, Gueliz. Wide streets, some more up-market shops, more expensive restaurants and bars and good coffee. Five minutes in a taxi – beige here – to the main square of the medina, Jemaa el 'Fnaa, 15 minutes to the airport and 5 minutes ... read more

On the way to exchanging the High Atlas Mountains for sea level and the coast at Essaouira – shortened to 'S'weera' by the locals – we took a detour to a winery. Now perhaps most people are more aware than I but, for much of my life, I have enjoyed a quiet drop of wine from time to time and I can't recall ever having Moroccan wine. I had put wine (and other alcohol) to one side for our time in Morocco figuring that there wouldn't be much, if any about. And, for the most part, I was right to do so. There are establishments that sell alcohol in Morocco. Some of the large cities have what we might call a 'grog shop' and others might call an 'offy'. We had visited one in Meknes, I ... read more
