Woke up early as I wanted to go to Moulay Idris and Volubilis. There are no collective taxis (i.e. a shared taxi with 7 people in it; 2 passengers in front and 4 at the back plus the driver) to Volubilis but there are to Moulay Idiris. The place to get a grand taxi to Moulay is not from the same place as the other taxi, the place is in the Meknes new city and I was looking for it all over the place but couldn't find it. Finally I met two guys who helped me out and put me into a taxi that dropped me off near the Moulay Idiris taxi stand. I went to Moulay Idiris and then took the same taxi to Volubilis. I could have walked to Volubilis but decided to take ... read more

Woke up early and I went to this cafe I had seen last night. The owner was nice man and spoke English. I had something called Feve its like a lentil soup. I think anything with the right amount of salt will taste nice. Checked email and thereafter checked out of the hotel and took a grand taxi to Meknes. The trip took around 1.5hours. I met this girl in the taxi who spoke English and we got chatting. She said her dream was to go to London what a shock !!!! she was studying at the Ismail university in Meknes and her home town was Ifran. Ifran also has a big university but thats for the beautiful and rich as lonely planet puts it. But she did tell me its extremely expensive. She also mentioned ... read more

Woke up early in the morning for the sunrise. Was disappointed with the view of the sun rise guess I was expecting something different again, all what I saw was the sun rising from a dune and then saw the sun rising from another dune it was really useless. I think what’s important is to see the sun rise from the horizon and thats not what I saw. I kept walking up a dune and noticed there were 3 more bases in the adjoining valleys so I wasn’t quite alone in the area. We didn't have breakfast and we started to move to see the other villages. It was quite painful to be on the back of a camel but I couldn't be asked to walk. By this time I was a little tired of the ... read more

I woke up around 8am and took a shower. Had mint tea and had a chat with the owners son. I said what I can afford is Dhm550. He said the lowest is 650 and then after bargaining it became 600 and then I said come on I am a student from Sri Lanka I don’t have much money and that he wouldn’t have to spend much money on food because I'm vegetarian and lets do this for 550. He said let me go and check and came back after 2 mins and said ok 550 and deal. Afterwards I met Daniel from Sweden who had already spent 2 nights in the desert and asked him how his experience was and he said it was soo good he can’t explain it in words. I wanted to ... read more

The guy at the reception told me that there is a tour for 2 nights 3 days where they did the two gorges near Tenehir and the Marzhouga desert which was costing Dhm1050 or Dhm850 without a camel ride. The French couple was doing it and they required a 3rd person. Even though I heard from the French couple yesterday that they had met travellers who said it was good I felt the price was a little steep and could not spend 3 days on a tour. Instead I thought I will do it on my own. Woke up early as I had to catch the bus to Tenehir took a taxi to the bus station and bought a ticket to Tenehir, while in the bus I decided I can't be bothered walking through the gorges ... read more

We are in Rabat but camping in the next town across the river called Sale, it is next to the river front and you can smell the delicious fish being cooked from the various food stalls, we took a walk for a bit around the ocean front and it was full of rubbish and next to slum looking area, some people are fishing as well. The people are very nice and greet us politely as we walk along, Mark almost got bitten by a dog but didnnt so that was good. We are staying here mainly to apply for visas to Mauritania and Mali, we stayed for three nights , we cant really go around town until after noon to make sure we are around if problems with visas arise. We drove as far as we ... read more

Adam had never been to Paris, so we flew from Paris to Marrakech, taking the TGV from Geneva. We met up in Paris with my uncle, JB, his wife, DIDI and my aunt, Chantal and rode bikes around to discover Paris by night. Yap! Bikes! There is a new system in Paris, called Velib (www.velib.paris.fr): every 300m are bikes stations where you can pick up or return a bike for super cheap (free for the first 30min!). Outstanding! Someone recommended that we take a taxi from the Gare du Nord to the Orly airport. Big mistake as we got totally ripped of. Apparently, taxi drivers know where the traffic jams are and intentially go into them: we ended up paying 60Euros for the ride, instead of the 30Euros he told us it would cost. The trip ... read more

It has been a whirlwind of activity since the last post. We finished up our Sociology and Arabic courses with a pretty brutal final exam in Arabic, and a quite lax one for Sociology. We spend the previous weekend studying, and making last minute stops to shops, interesting sites, and Marjane—a very large supermarket that gave us a little slice of the huge supermarket scene we were accustomed to at home. In Morocco, most stores are specialized and often quite small, so it was very rare for us to see something this large. If we weren’t making it on foot in the Medina, we were most likely traveling around by Taxi—an experience in which a co-traveler, Monica, documents quite well in this narrative. http://docs.google.com/View?docID=dd4bh73x_1fh66km&revision=_latest In Morocco, I have felt that I have made a stronger connection ... read more

It was a beautiful drive from Rabat to Todra Gorge, it took us just under two days of driving to get there. We saw monkeys on the side of the road, and villiages in places you wouldn't expect to see villiages. In a seemingly endless expanse of nothingness would emerge villages made of mud bricks surrounded by palm trees and corn fields. Irrigation is amazing. When we arrived in Todra Gorge we started in the incredibly touristy portion along with hoards of French and Spanish tour busses. It was a pretty cool view from the centre of the gorge, but for us, the fun was only starting. We camped further up the gorge at a small hotel away from the crowds. For the first time on the trip we were away from city lights and campground ... read more

The lake to Fes..Dan. OK I just have to say camping at the lake was great, mate. The thing was massive, and in a dry desert like Morocco even more appealing than a nice lake in NZ. There were dead fish, each about a metre in length scattered around the shore line but the local campers who aside from being high on hashish seemed very reliable, assured us it was safe to swim. So after dinner, of sponge cakes and dry biscuits, which Kees rudely decided to throw up later in the night, we headed down to the shore for a swim. Boy that water was beautiful, the temp was about perfect and after a no. of days at critical body temp, I couldn't think of anywhere better to be. Went for a swim again in ... read more
