We started the day with the standard breakfast of bread and jam before meandering our way through the medina, finding shade where possible as it was once again a spectacularly hot day without a cloud in the sky. The url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293735-d3567270-Reviews-El_Hedim_Square-Meknes_Meknes_Tafilalet_Region.htmlPlace el Hedim is a large square that marks the entrance to the souq. It is bordered by shops selling the usual Moroccan fare of carpets, tagines and jewellery and made a nice spot for a morning coffee as we watched the world go by. We were visited several times by stray cats hanging around looking for food scraps and several more times by some local youths looking for the same thing. The Souq in Meknes is made up of narrow cobblestone and dirt streets that struggle to hold the flow of humanity that rely on it ... read more

The reason I got to travel over to this other side of the Atlas is for a weekend workshop to train me as a VSN counselor. The Volunteer Support Network is a group of PCVs who are trained to counsel our peers. We are not professionals (three days of training cannot work miracles) but when we are out in our sites it is sometimes not very feasible to go to get professional counseling in Rabat. Peace Corps does provide psychologist services (and I have heard they are very good) though sometimes talking to a Moroccan, no matter how good they are, isn’t what we need. We need another American who understands what it is like to live in a fishbowl, who understands why the sight of a plastic bag can make a person want to ... read more

L-Eide Adha is every vegetarian's favorite Islamic holiday. -Sarcastic Peace Corps Volunteer L-Eide Adha is the most important holiday in the Islamic calandar, and a very big deal in Morocco. It is the reason we drove across Morocco to visit family. It is why we spent the week before baking cookies and making all sorts of mouthwatering little pastries with honey and peanuts and such. It is why I got to meet Hichem and Maryam's extended families and stay in the center of Errachidia at Hichem's mother's house. It is why I drank unnumerable glasses of tea and sat around for days making polite conversation with people I had never met before. It is why the roads were crowded with travelers, the trains raised their prices and buses were booked. It is also why I watched ... read more

Idaho may have snow snakes, but Morocco has snow monkies! We left Khemisset relatively early, after juggling around some of the weight to help out the poor little Golf. I still think Hichem should give it a name, it certainly deserves one after all we put it through. Hichem's brother SiMohmmed (one of four in the family) drove his car with us, and he took one of the barrels of olive oil and some of the other packages. The TV was replaced by Aziza, who was much more fun to talk to and more comfortable to lean against. The scenery leaving Khemisset was probably the prettiest I have seen here in Morocco. The hills are green this far north, and the road wound among them showing me picturesque views that reminded me of the hills of ... read more

Meknes was the next stop. Saw the most holiest city in Morocco...Moulay idriss. Also, saw the roman ruins at Volubolis which I thought were more impressive than those found in Italy, but what do I know, I am only 3 months old. Stayed in a really cool riad. ... read more

I am now in Meknes, it's much less hassle here. I almost miss the aggressive touts! On the bus here, a young man practised his English by talking to me - which passed the time. He said he was studying English at college. When I arrived I looked round 4 different Hotels in the Medina - all of them pretty dire. I finally took one for 40 Dirhams, it looked the nicest because it had at least been decorated recently. Although it has a very basic communal shower, and smelly communal squat toilets. I walked around Meknes this afternoon, some of the photos are reproduced here.... read more

We flew the King's airline into Casablanca and took the train ride to Fes,the oldest imperial moroccan city in the north (800 AD) . We explored the medina (old city) and the souks (bazaars). It is an experience to get lost in this labyrinth of narrow streets with shops selling carpets to spices to leather goods. The streets are bustling with locals and tourists trying to get the best bargain and ofcourse, the ever reliable donkeys carrying merchandise to every nook and corner of this old, unchanged city.. Probably very similar to how things were 1200 years ago, except for the tourists !! Volubulis, close to Fes, is the largest and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco. We spent a day visiting the ruins that has impressive monuments like the Arch de Triumph, capitol, baths and ... read more
