I took a three day organized trip to the edge of the Sahara on the Algerian border. We rode camels into the middle of the desert and spent the night in Berber tents in the dunes. These are a few of the views along the way, the pictures say more than I ever could.... read more

It was time to get away from the noisy medinas and head into the countryside to experience the real Morocco. Next few days were spent driving through some spectacular scenery in the Middle Atlas mountains. First stop was Midelt with a lovely auberge and refreshing spring water pool. Took a wander through the nearby village and chatted with some local women. Next stop was Todra Gorge. It's an amazingly lush valley with kasbahs surrounded by various crops such as pomegranates, peaches, apples, maize, alfafa, beans, cabbage, etc. Along the walk, we gorged on fresh figs straight off the trees. It's also blatantly obvious that it's the Berber women that do all the work in the fields and carry crops on their backs like mules. Apparently the men only till the soil, a grand total of about ... read more

In my haste to get off the last blog, I forgot to add some photos of Volubilis (best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco), and Moulay Idriss (the founder of Islam in Morocco; and the country's most important pilgrimage site, after Mecca). So here they are. We travelled there by grand taxi, which is an old Merc sedan with 2 people plus driver in the front, and 4 people in the back. They don't go until they are full or unless you pay for the whole taxi. So you could be waiting ages. This is the only means of transport in Morocco outside the train system. ... read more

Caught the train from Fes...I was a bit hung over from having a few drinks at a nightclub the night before. I arrived at the train station (already having purchased my ticket) and found two Aussie travelers having a caffe noir at the cafe immediately outside the station. I had 20 minutes to kill so I sat next to them and chatted. I found out they had recently been in Meknes and recommended the Touring Hotel which is right near the Meknes train station. They then mentioned they were heading back to Spain via Tangiers and thus gave me their Lonely Planet Morocco book (which was good as I was using my Lonely Planet Africa book which is not as indepth as the country-specific versions). A quick one-hour train ride and I was in Menkes. As ... read more

The time had come to leave the beautiful and serene desert/Merzouga and continue the journey. With the help of Edir from Chez Julia I piled into a grand taxi and made my way back to Rissani in hopes of catching transport to Tinerhir and my destination of the Todra Gorge. Rissani, wasn't looking forward to going back there. Fortunately as we arrived there was another traveler in the back of the taxi that was asking about Tinerhir as well, we hooked up and with a united front we scooped another grand taxi to ourselves and made our escape.... Nicolas, from Chile, is a great guy and it was a lot of fun having someone to hang around with for a couple of days. In fact we became roommates as well as accommodation at the Gorge proved ... read more

Says it all, the main reason for this whole crazy adventure... Finally felt well enough to travel so hopped an early bus out of Azrou, destination Rissani. Loooonnnngg day to say the least, it was an 8 1/2 hour trip from Hell on one of the local transports...the seats were so close together that I couldn't sit with my knees in front of me: had to sit at an angle and essentially squirmed in my seat the whole way... was able to see some beautiful sites along the way which was cool, but the bus would stop at every town along the way and for anyone standing by the side of the road... Uneventful ride until we got to Erfoud, the stop before the end of the line of Rissani, a complete den of thieves. The ... read more

Hadn't originally planned on heading to Azrou, in fact I had never even heard of it. When the need to get out of Fès became so great I began researching other interesting places in the area and came upon this one. My original plan was to take the overnight bus from Fès to Merzouga and the Sahara (9 hour bus ride) but then decided to break up the journey a little... Definitely a change of gears from Fès; fairly small, quiet (with the exception of the mulititude of car alarms going off incessantly in the parking lot outside my room..ugh...) and certainly more laid back... The thing I noticed most by the end of my journey was the fact that I must have had "sucker" written across my forehead, and it all started here... Within five ... read more

Hopped a train to Meknes after my first day in Casa, really nice city. Got lost in the medina a few times which was a little daunting but paid a couple of kids to get me out... Hooked up with a couple of Yanks that night, one of whom worked in Morocco with the Peace Corps and could speak Arabic, very handy! Good hang with them and the following day took a trip up to Volubilis to see the Roman ruins (circa 1-2 AD), really cool... Culture shock is starting to kick in, I never did really get over it. Just when you thought you had a handle on it you would find things completely different in the next town...... read more

This was the perfect trip to greet the new season. The sun was shining and all the flowers were out, but I didn't spend every minute of the weekend outside. As with other PCV get togethers, we had a movie marathon beginning with “Napoleon Dynamite” (home sweetpotato home!) and going through “Office Space” and “Brokeback Mountain” before finishing with some new Family Guy episodes. The landscape of Brokeback actually made me more homesick than the familiarity of Idaho-filmed Napoleon Dynamite. The movies are always a fun mini-vacation but the highlight of this trip was the Middle Atlas landscape. Tighassaline is small enough that any walk quickly led out of town and along rocky paths through new spikes of wheat and uncultivated fields of spring flowers. I discovered blue lupine spires, glowing butter cups, several kinds of ... read more

My alarm went off at 5am and as I turned it off I wondered what I was hearing out in the street. Pre-coffee, I though of dogs and pictured all the strays of Kelaa sitting in the street below my apartment talking very loudly. I went upstairs to the kitchen, and as I crossed the open roof from the stairs to the door to the kitchen I could hear the sound more clearly. It was the three closest mosques calling out the pre-morning prayer with the usual delayed repetition that prevents me from distinguishing any one of them very well. I generally sleep through the early call to prayer and when it does disturb me I never fully wake up. This was the first time I realized how long it is. I had stumbled out of ... read more
