Alors, on a rallongé notre séjour à Meknes, malgré la chaleur on ... read more

It was hard leaving Rebecca and Maryam, but it was time to hit the road. Yesterday I left the house early in the morning and took a shared grand taxi to Ben Guerir where I caught a train north to Meknes. Hotel Maroc had been recommended to me and it's nice though after being used to the cheap hotels in Marrakech any other city seems expensive. This morning I got up early again (early on this vacation seems to mean before ten a.m. but today I actually got up at seven). I went to the taxi station for the town of Moulay Idriss, which is close enough to Oualili that you can see it down the valley. There are no direct taxis to Oualili, so I hired a second taxi from Moulay Idriss to Oualili. Nobody ... read more

We took a turquoise petit taxi to the Medina area. It was just over 10dh, we beat the night-time double fares. We looked over a few hotels and Hotel Regina seemed like the best bang for our buck. It's 100dh/nite for 2ppl so it's really not much at all. Wanted to try a hammam but that didn't happen. Maybe I will get up early enough tomorrow. My hair is BEGGING to be washed, yuck, I know. Oualili is still on my list of places to see. Our hotel offers hot showers for 5dh. He told me the roof was closed when I asked but the lock is actually broken so you just slide it over and you can open the door. I like roof top views and the air, even though it's a bit tainted with ... read more

I'm not feeling my best, but my schedule - and the train ticket in my purse - requires that I make it to the train station for a 5:00 am train to Casablanca. I can do this. At least this is what I have been telling myself since I got up just after 3:00am, and, let's face it, on many other occasions during this trip. And indeed I can. I made it to Casablanca in time to catch a taxi to the Hassan II mosque, the third largest mosque in the world and one of the only mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslims. As advertised it was quite impressive, built partially over the sea in reference to a verse in the Koran that specifies God's throne as being built upon the water. Inside there is space ... read more

March 17, 2008 Today started off much earlier than normal. We woke up for good at 4:45 so we could go watch the sun rise. As much as it wasn’t fun to get up so early, I was soo happy when it finally came, because I went from one of the best night’s sleep to the worst in a day. The mattress was very uncomfortable, the pillows were hard, we had to share a blanket and sheet, and it was FREEZING! Even with my jeans, 2 pairs of socks, cami, tank top, long sleeve shirt, and sweatshirt (over my head, too) I was soooo COLD! I would wake up every couple hours trying to get warm and comfortable, but I never really succeeded. When we went outside to go, you could see every star in the ... read more

March 18, 2008 We woke up this morning and went to breakfast before packing our things up to leave. Then we got on our favorite bus, and started our drive. We got a tour of Meknes, and stopped to see the city from the outside. We could see the walls enclosing the city and the numerous minarets. Then we went to the “best gate” in Meknes. The gate leads into a market, or medina. Then we got back into the bus to go to Tétouan. When we finally got here, Mohammad took us on a little tour of the important streets, which you could tell were important because they are named after the King’s father. We went the King’s Palace, and then made our way through the streets to a flea market. After that we stopped ... read more

Today we both felt better and well enough to look around Meknes. Neither of us particularly likes the place so we want to see it so that we can leave. We began our sightseeing in the main square which was previously the only part we had managed to see. We dodged the café owners and dived into the covered market for a loo, around. The first row we went down was just packed full of stalls which sold the little pastries which look ever so colourful. We walked down amazed at the hundreds of different varieties and the hoards of wasps. We turned at the end of the row and found ourselves amongst the meat stalls. I made the foolish mistake of looking at the first stall and hastily looked away. I'm not overly squeamish but ... read more

After a couple of days in Tanger to orient ourselves and figure out a game plan, my buddy Dan and I set out by train to Meknes. We arrived at the gare or station in about three hour's time and following the directions of the Lonely Planet, made our way to the aptly named Hotel Majestic. We were greeted by the affable desk clerk and shown upstairs through a dimly lit hallway that boasted an intricate Escheresque tiled floor to our room, which was large and roomy with a balcony that would serve quite nicely for drying laundry. There was also a great common room or tea salon, dripping with brass lanterns, intricately patterned cushions and mirrors on the first floor. We unpacked as quickly as we could and set out first to find something to ... read more

The plan yesterday was to go to Moulay Idriss, one of Moroccos most important pilgramage sites Has apparently only been open to non Muslims for the past 70 years. It is about half an hour in a shared taxi from Meknes. Unfortunately, no one else seemed to want to go to Moulay Idriss yesterday morning, so I had to negotiate and hire a grande taxi for myself. According to the Book, it can sometimes be a little difficult to get back to meknes from MI, so I arranged for the driver to wait a couple of hours, while i looked around, then take me back. None of the mosques or monuments in Moulay Idriss are open to non muslims, but (with the exception of one annoying little dickhead who made it his business to try and ... read more

After breakfast this morning, I caught a shared taxi to azrou. According to my LP book, once a week, in azrou, there is a big souk, where all the locals come to haggle over their berber carpets. The once a week is a tuesday, and, as today happened to be a tuesday, off i went. azrou is on the road to fez, and it took us about an hour and a half in the taxi. I think i perhaps got there a little late in the day - altho was there before 11- as the souk seemed to consist of a covered market like the sort youd find in provincial towns the world over, a fez bits and bobs of shops selling local products - where i tried out my haggling skills and bought some cushion ... read more
