I am now in Meknes, it's much less hassle here. I almost miss the aggressive touts! On the bus here, a young man practised his English by talking to me - which passed the time. He said he was studying English at college. When I arrived I looked round 4 different Hotels in the Medina - all of them pretty dire. I finally took one for 40 Dirhams, it looked the nicest because it had at least been decorated recently. Although it has a very basic communal shower, and smelly communal squat toilets. We flew the King's airline into Casablanca and took the train ride to Fes,the oldest imperial moroccan city in the north (800 AD) . We explored the medina (old city) and the souks (bazaars). It is an experience to get lost in this labyrinth of narrow streets with shops selling carpets to spices to leather goods. The streets are bustling with locals and tourists trying to get the best bargain and ofcourse, the ever reliable donkeys carrying merchandise to every nook and corner of this old, unchanged city.. Probably very similar to how things were 1200 years ago, except for the tourists !! Volubulis, close to Fes, is the largest and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco.
