The journey from Rabat to Meknes is a short one, only some 150 km, but it is a large distance culturally and architecturally. Rabat is a large, mostly modern city. There is a fairly small medina, but most of the city is more modern Other than the redoubt of the Udayas, there is relatively little of great historical significance as far as extant structures are concerned.. Meknes, on the other hand, is much more rich with historical structures, and is frankly, to me at least, a much more vibrant city for the visitor. Our visit began with a visit to the Royal Granaries and Stables, established by Moulay Ismail (Ismail ibn Sharif). By all accounts, this man who ruled Morocco during the years 1672-1727 was a man who lived large. Known as the "Warrior King", he ... read more

(publishing with pictures now) Headed out early today for Fes but made of day of stops before getting there. Before we left Casablanca we drove to the Hassan II mosque which is reportedly the 3rd largest mosque in the world. Forty thousand people can get in there during prayer. Of course we found cats outside and had to have picture of them, too. We also took a swing by Rick's Cafe. For those Bogey fans, you'll know what I'm talking about! :) Now we start our 2 hour drive north to Meknes. Meknes is one of the four Imperial cities founded in the 17th century. It's famous for the kasbah (fortress) around the city and it's mosque and shrine for the Sultan Moulay Ismail, who brought Meknes into great power. Many ambassadors from European countries were ... read more

"Tajine" qu'il me relance. Bon.

The Hotel Taddart in Midelt was perfectly comfortable, it was just rather soulless. It had barely opened and thus had a rather odd ambience about it. An overly large and wannabe grand reception area, adorned with Morocco’s best weaves draped on the floors, was deserted and ornately carved alabaster aside it had the feel of the Overlook (Overreach?) hotel – or whatever the hotel is called in The Shining. It was standard almost formulaic 4* fare and it could have easily been in the Algarve, apart from costing a third as much. But we weren’t complaining it seemed absolute luxury just to be out of the southern heat. The Sahara was fantastic but it was heavy going and riding at any time of the day after 10 am borderline unbearable. And we weren’t even quite yet ... read more

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” - Jawaharial Nehru My perception of Morocco is deserts, camels and bedouin, at least til I arrived. It's the height of spring, but I'm surprised by the rolling green hills, the agriculture - citrus, olives, sheep grazing. We could be on a train in any country area in Australia. This is not at all like the photos I've seen.... where are my sand dunes? We were leaving "Casa" to explore the real Morocco. A three hour train ride sees us arrive at the Imperial city of Meknes, which was the capital of Morocco under the reign of Moulay Ismail (1672–1727), before being relocated ... read more

At Fez, we rented a car to drive north to the Meditarranean coast and then hug the Atlantic coast all the way down to Sidi Ifni and finally to return the car at Fez's competing highlight to south of Marrakech. The car rental itself was pretty uneventful and relatively hassle free. Meknes is another old imperial city, though not as famous as Fez. We just stopped on the way to the nearby Roman ruins at Volubilis.... read more
