I am on my last day now, very sad, and in typical Super G fashion I have chosen a massive religious holiday as my last day, meaning pretty much everywhere is closed! Great! My flight isn't til tonight and I have had to check out of my hotel, so I am wandering the streets aimlessly until I head to the airport in 5.5 hours, not that I'm counting! Yesterday was the first day I have had to myself since arriving, and it was lovely. I took all the unwanted clothes Lys and I had thrown out to a childrens home on the outskirts of Tana and got a guided tour. Compared to other countries I've visited in the developing world, there is very little desperate poverty in Madagascar, but there are so many street children in ... read more

We left Tana a few days ago and headed east to the rainforest where we saw the largest lemur of them all, the indri. It was FREEZING, as in see your breath freezing, but worth the trip, got to watch a mother and her baby sunning themselves in the trees, as well as the rest of the family leaping about. Also got to hear them call, which was beautiful and eerie but a lot like the noise my dogs make when they want attention! Also got to see plenty of other rainforest species, which was different for me as I have been working in dry forest, and great for Lys who is a beach bum and hasn't seen much terrestrial wildlife during her time with Frontier! We are now back in Tana, Lys is leaving first ... read more

The taxi brousse to Tana was far less painful than expected, if a little hair raising at times, got here in 10.5 hours, possibly due to the hair raising nature of the journey! The scenery was breathtaking and the faces have changed as we head further south from the African influence in the north to Polynesian in the Central Highlands. Today we are having a day off before heading east for a couple of days to hopefully see the indri (a species of lemur), we are both a bit pooped after the last few days! Tana is piggin freezing, have to wear a fleece! Last night we bumped into Charlie, who I worked with in the forest when I first arrived, it was nice to catch up, we are meeting him again tonight along with a ... read more

Just a few shots the computer refused to accept at the end of the last blog. The stunning natural swimming pool at Isalo NP, which was an idyllic oasis and so much better than we expected - for once a tourist attraction that deserved the hype! The park was also home to a small species of Baobab I can't remember the name of - paka.. something or other. Sorry about that, we had better improve our learning skills for the 150 species of fish we are expected to know !! Anyway they are bizarre plants. The Ringtail Makis were cool too, a semi-tame group of wild lemurs which just behaved as if we weren't there. There reaction as soon as the sun came out was to sit down and put their arms out wide to soak-up ... read more

Yes - Geoff's bizarre collection of school-boy French came in handy during our short trip south from Toliara to the remote beach of Anakao and the Heaven's opened allowing him to legitimately use the everyday phrase of "it's a deluge!". Unseasonably high winds and a pretty incredible thunderstorm were combined with cockroaches in the bed to make for a rather brief visit. Anyway, we survived - not quite the relaxing few days away from the city we expected, but it wasn't all bad as you can see from the pics and as our bags weren't some of those that fell in the sea we can't really complain! We're off to the dive project tomorrow on a 12-24 hour trip by sailing boat to Andavoadaka, which is apparently an expedition in itself.... We are fully stocked with ... read more

Here's a slightly extended version of a trip from Tana to Toliara - mainly photos with a few words to set the scene. Our first view of Madagascar was the arid western side of the island as we came into land at Tana. A short taxi ride found us at the Manoir Rouge hotel in Ifaty a typically dusty Malagasy town servicing the airport. The view of everyday life from the window was enough to entertain Lexa for quite some time, with the butchers right outside displaying every part of a Zebu, much still covered in fur. A lot of the time human power is still the way to go around here with bikes, Pousse-Pousse and carts everywhere. With high petrol prices (75p/lt) travel further afield is by taxi-brousse often loaded with people and luggage quite ... read more

HOLIDAY!!!! I thought it might take a while to settle into the holiday vibe, but we have been busy having a wicked time and have both forgotten all about work! We left Diego and headed for Ankarana, a national park, where we saw dramatic tsingy (like another world! the first settlers must have wondered what they'd stumbled across!) and got really close to crowned lemurs. I have been used to having lemurs around but not this close, you could reach out and touch them. As a conservationist I find animals in NPs being habituated to humans a bit rubbish, but it was an amazing experience all the same. We then headed for Nosy Be (Big Island) where we ate beautiful fresh seafood and sat on the beach before taking the ferry to Mahajunga, where we are ... read more

Having been chased from the cold weather of the "hautes plateaus", I recently found myself in a 19 hour taxi-brousse ride from Antsirabe to Morondava. I knew I was getting into warm territory when the brousse stopped in Miandrivazo for a late night snack (10pm) and I found myself taking off my sweatshirt! Bring it on! As we slowly made our way over what seemed to me a dried up river bed full of gigantic canyons, all through dahalo (bandit) country, I attempted a delirious sleep. We arrived in sunny Morondava at 7am. Having planned so well for this trip, I had brought no guide book and disregarded all information that my friend provided about the town. I assumed I'd find cell coverage and all would be well. Yes, Morondava does have cell coverage, but it's ... read more

This morning my travelling buddy Lys returned to town, hooray! So we will be off first thing tomorrow to head for the National Park at Ankarana and then on to Nosy Be. Haven't decided what will come next after that, but good things I'm sure! We are both desperately in need of a holiday so hopefully there will be some relaxing along the way! At the moment I have been struggling to upload photos, will definitely get some up when I'm home so you can all get a taste of my life in Madagascar. The time to head home is getting ever nearer, sadly, so we are both wanting to make the next two weeks count. I will be back in the UK on the 16th Aug, see you all soon! ... read more

As of yesterday I am no longer a working woman here in Madagascar, although I have been in the office all day! My travelling companion may not be back in town for a few days so I am trying to entertain myself until then! The last month has flown by, the expedition went well, found some (biologically) very interesting stuff and saw some beautiful places. The group were really nice, it was all about the challenge, starting with the chin up challenge, escalating to the Super G bench press challenge and the how far can you throw Super G challenge. Wild times! We returned to town for a celebratory night out, with all the staff celebrating a particularly tough month by snorting creme brulee and mixing our drinks. We then spent the next day lying on ... read more
