So we arrived at Andavadoake and to be specific Half Moon Beach, our home for 6 weeks. Here's a few shots to give you a feel for the place. As we are so far behind and now writing this from India, I'm afraid the accompanying words are going to be sparse...but maybe that's a good thing! ... read more

Purely because dive protocol insisted on a day to 'de-gas' (non-divers please phone a friend for an explanation if required) and we were only allowed 1 beer prior to dive days, we HAD to have a party night in every 5...... They all had a theme of sorts such as Casino night, Super heroes, whateveryouwant night and pirates- these led to some extremely inventive fancy dress costumes! Most people ended up in the local Epi Bar (Epicerie) which played the best loved local tunes and occasionally Bob Marley at high volume. The competition between locals and vazaha to 'out-dance' each other was hot. ... read more

After much preparation and planning we left the UK in mid September and joined a team of 14 LEPRA cyclists in Madagascar. We all met up in the highlands of Southern Madagascar in a National Park called Ranomafana. Sadly much of the original rain forest has been destroyed in Madagascar and a few National Parks have been created to preserve some of the remaining forests. Even then poverty forces locals to employ illegal slash and burn methods in an attempt to sustain themselves. As we prepared for our first day’s cycling we were quickly reminded that this was not the UK. when a recently beheaded Zebu (a Malagasy cow) clattered down the slight incline in front of our bamboo shack on a metal wheeled bogie as it was transported towards the market. The 3 Malagasy butchers ... read more

Well actually, I exaggerate slightly it was only 23 hours….but on a boat that looked like something straight out of Pirates of the Caribbean, that was more than enough for most people as we travelled the 200km north from Tulear to the dive project. Personally and in spite of the rats running around as we slept on the deck, the cockroach that crawled over my face in the middle of the night and the lack of toilet facilities - we loved it! Whilst still in Tulear there was a slight crisis caused by 3 people’s bags going missing - spread across the globe between Paris and Washington by Air Madagascar and American Airlines. This meant a few people had fun buying whole new wardrobes for themselves and left us debating whether to wait around for their ... read more

Hi everyone, Before you get too excited this isn’t really the next instalment, just a quick apology for the lack of blog updates over the last couple of months! As usual I have plenty of excuses for being slack, for starters - only email via satellite phone was available at the dive project and at 5€ a pop to send a short text mail we didn’t do any of that… The 2 - 3 weeks of travelling we had after leaving the project were a haze of bone-jarring, bum-numbing bus journeys, remote river trips and isolated National Parks, a time where we were rarely blessed with electricity let alone access to a computer. And if that wasn’t enough, our return to England has been somewhat blighted by illness….nothing that serious we hope (they are still investigating), ... read more

Just a brief story to pass on...life in village has been quiet. We are slowly warming into the hot season and the days are getting a little longer. One afternoon a little friend, Faniry, came to visit me as I was working in my yard, carrying her 2 year old brother Elie on her back. We got to work pulling up weeds together when Faniry suddenly asks: "Did you eat today?" I replied that no, actually I had not eaten dinner yet. So she says: "Lots of the kids are saying you don't eat rice. Do you have any rice?" I responded that yes, I did actually have rice, and she comes back with: "Well, I was worried that you didn't have any rice, so I had 40AR (2 cents) the other day and I wanted ... read more
