Dies pass... read more

I'm no Ornithologist guys, and before I went on this trip I struggled to know the difference between a crane and a heron (but I do recognise Kookaburras!), so my naming of the 60 or so species of birds we saw between the five safari parks is only as good as that identified by my respective guides. I'm not going to do anything more than nominate the various categories of birds we saw at least one variety of (and in most cases, more than one) and then add a whole lot of pics of those that I could get close enough to with my relatively low powered camera to give a clear picture. For you bird lovers - enjoy, and for those of you who aren't - suit yourself! The broad species of birds sighted (in ... read more

As promised, I said I would write a separate blog summarising most of the wildlife we saw between the 5 safari parks we visited. I'll list the animals in roughly the order of the numbers of them we estimate we saw in total: Zebra: These were regular sightings at all parks, and often in their hundreds, if not thousands. Wildebeest: With the Great Migration having already started, there were plenty of these around, mostly in packs but periodically a solo beast was found wandering by itself. Gazelle: Two types appear - Grant's and Thomson's. They cropped up frequently, usually in groups of a couple of dozen or so. Elephant: These were seen at most parks, but by far the biggest player was Amboseli, where we would see groups of up to 50 wandering around. An amazing ... read more

Our day started with a short flight from the Mara back to Nairobi, prior to driving south to Amboseli. As tends to happen in Africa, our 8.45am flight finally got away at 10.15am. The only disappointment was that on our way to the airstrip (note, I didn’t say airport!), we got word that a rhino (the only one of the ‘Big Five’ we hadn’t seen in the Mara) had been sighted some distance away. As we didn’t want to miss the flight, we passed up that opportunity but in fact would have had plenty of time to check it out. The bonus for us was that the strict 15kg total luggage limit, which would have had us both in trouble, was disregarded as there were only the two of us plus two Mexican women on the ... read more

Fortunately our air commute from Livingstone to Nairobi via Joburg went fairly much to plan, with the hour transit time plenty to change flights. I spent a somewhat uncomfortable 4 hours in the air on the second flight when I realised that my Kenyan visa was packed away in my suitcase, which of course would come out on the conveyor belt after Immigration. My luck was in however, as I found two very helpful Immigration ladies who were able to check their database and identify that I had already paid for and received a visa. Ironically, I ended up clearing Immigration earlier than Bruce, who had all the right paperwork in place. On arrival at Nairobi around 9pm ... read more

After covering Masaimara in the last two video blogs, this is my third episode of the slideshow. This time my destination was Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria. Unlike Masaimara where we stayed in tents for two nights, we made day trips in both Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria. I made my base in Nakuru, so it was easy to cover them both in two separate day trips. But don’t underestimate the wild life of Lake Nakuru although the area is smaller as compared to Masaimara. True, it’s not a vast landscape like Mara, but there is no shortage of wild life in Lake Nakuru, - zebra, giraffe, impala, rhino, baboon, you name it. If you just want to experience wild life and a day of enjoying safari, a quick and easy way is to head out ... read more

This is the second episode of video blog to present a slideshow of my journey through my dreamland Africa. I have tried to capture the imagination of my viewers through my lens presenting a slideshow with my narration. It is the beautiful Masaimara! Many come here for safari and I also enjoyed the safari. But generally, I want to stay away from the tourist attractions. I love my lonely planet of Africa where the blooming Jacaranda and thorny bush land of Africa cover the landscape, the red earth picks up the stormy dust and the herd of elephants often takes shelter from the hot afternoon sun under Acacia trees. That is my Africa where I can listen to its story on my own. I love that Africa. As I have mentioned often, the movie “Out of ... read more

Pictures are worth of thousand words....we all know that. So I fancied to share my epic journey in Africa through my lens - slideshow. I will be posting seven short video clips covering my fairy tale journey in this continent that I have slowly fallen in love with. This is the first clip of the series. Believe me, I am not going to burden you with long video clips that you would start yawning...they are merely four minutes each, - just a few blinks. And I surely know, the appreciation always lies in the eyes of beholder - YOU. I certainly hope to see that sparkle in your eyes! Here you go! ... read more

I left Kima on Thursday, October 25th, with a bus to Nairobi where I arrived at 6PM. My friend Nathalie from Manchester was in Nairobi and I had booked a room in the same hostel as she and her friend Kate, so that I would be able to spend one evening with her. I was very happy to see her and I had been looking forward to this for a long time. The only thing I regretted in Kima was not having any friends. Most adults were friendly, but nobody really talked to me or tried to befriend me ; so, I mostly stayed alone and I was a bit lonely sometimes. This enhanced my wish to see Nathalie a lot! ^_^ We stayed at the Wildebeest Hostel, close to the Nairobi national park. It was ... read more
