Dear friends of ours from NZ have moved to our neighbourhood, ie. Uganda :) We have enjoyed safari time with them in the Mara and showing them around Nairobi. It is great in the midst of farwells for the kids to reconnect with friends from their past. It has been a blast, not as many photos as I would like, far too much eating and talking. And into Africa we went. After arriving in Kenya with roughly 30 hours of travel under our belts, we were excited to start exploring. Nairobi was our first stop, and we stared out the windows of our transit anxiously awaiting our chance to get out and have a better look. Problem was, 30 hours of travel really takes it out of you, so the only exploring we did day 1 was both sides of our pillows. We were able to get out for a small walk around dinner time, but we were told to stick to exploring during day light hours as Nairobi can be a bit unsafe after dark. We settled into a nice Swahili restaurant for food, and were charmed by the friendly servers. They we were off on Safari. After many hours in ... read more

Our trip across the border proved to be fairly painless and after a few hours we descended into Nairobi where we said goodbye to the majority of the truck which left only four of us remaining – Lauren, Stacey, Luke and myself. We had a couple of days free time here so we went out and did some souvenir shopping and caught up on all those travellers tasks like washing and e-mails. We also visited a local mall a couple of times which was interesting for the fact of all the security. Every car entering the compound was scanned for bombs, and every person walking in was also scanned more so than you would be at the airport. A sad situation but necessary considering the recent terrorist attacks in Nairobi. But before long we were back ... read more

Maasai Mara What more can you ask for? A balloon ride over the Maasai Mara watching the sunrise and the wildebeest migration, a leopard with a fresh kill up a tree, lion prides sitting by the roadside, cheetahs playfully attempting to mate ( one more willing than the other), vultures feeding off a zebra carcass left by lions from the day before, giraffes sitting under a tree, elephants wandering past while you have a picnic lunch and a lion so thirsty she has dropped to the side of the road to drink from a puddle left by last night's rain. We asked for and got the crossing of the wilderbeest over the Mara river but with only a minute to spare. Two days of Kenya that could not be topped. Our balloon ride started with a ... read more

We set off from Nairobi in our 4 wheel drive vehicles. Drove out through the busy Nairobi traffic and were grateful that we don't have to drive ourselves as there do not appear to be any rules particularly on roundabouts. Kevin decided that the rule is " who dares wins". We headed towards the area where the Masai live and with about 80 ks to go, we hit the corrugated road which we followed to the park. We started seeing the Masai tending their cattle on the side of the roads. They dress in the colour red supposedly so that the lions can recognise them. They each leave each other alone. We started seeing wildlife as the landscape changed to the plains. Zebras, giraffes, elephants and wildebeest. Arrived at Ol Tukai (Swahili for palm) lodge , ... read more

I organized this safari from my Nairobi hostel the morning before. I booked it through Sunsplash Safarisbecause they returned my emails promptly and offered the best price. I paid $360 for a three-day safari (though the morning of day 1 and the afternoon and evening of day 3 are just getting away from and back to Nairobi), which was much less than I had expected. These budget companies have different names but all pretty much offer the same service: they consolidate their services and fill their vehicles so they can make a profit. They sent a driver to pick me up at my hostel at 8AM. He was right on time, but by the time we drove to a meeting point, handled the money, loaded the van, and picked up other tourists around the city, it ... read more

17 June: Nakuru to Eldoret, Kenya After a morning shower, we had a warm breakfast. Because so many people were up early, they decided to make breakfast early so my bacon was cold since I was in the shower. But I also ended up having some rice cakes with peanut butter and jelly which was quite nice. After packing up, we drove off to our last campsite in Kenya. Along the way, we stopped at the super market far a couple hours where we picked up a few items and then went and relaxed at the coffee shop enjoying wifi, mochas, and Samantha got chocolate cake and I some French fries. Then we were back on the road. Along the drives we have taken, it has been interesting to see the different villages and people we ... read more

16 June: Nakuru, Kenya Our morning started at 5AM with getting ready and having a quick breakfast which for me consisted of rice cakes. We then were picked up at 6AM by two vans to go on a full day safari. Samantha and I ended up in the van with Tamar (originally from Cali but now has been living in Australia for 13 years) and Dave (from Australia), Emily and boyfriend Mark (from London), Nichole (from Australia) and Mark (Julie's husband from Australia). It turned out to be a great safari. Within the first five minuets of entering the park we got to see three female lions eating their buffalo feast. Later we even saw a young male lion relaxing in the shade about ten meters from the road. We also got to see three white ... read more
