It is always bittersweet when we come to the last day of our travels. Though we look forward to returning home we know we'll miss our Kenyan friends. We appreciate their hospitality and efforts they make to keep us safe. Pastor Timothy, Pastor Richard, and Moses traveled with us the entire trip and saw us off at the Eldoret airport. We flew on a small prop plane into Nairobi where we had an interesting experience trying to find our KLM flight. Because of the fire a week ago at the International Airport things were not normal. First we had to find our own bags on a trailer before taking a bus to wait in several lines for check-in. Then there were tents set up on the tarmac for waiting areas. We stood outside and were thankful ... read more

August is the beginning of the short rainy season in this area. In Liyavo, where we are staying the rains have contributed to some slippery, muddy roads. Pastor Timothy’s Toyota pickup has a difficult time getting through and we have been stuck too many times to count. People always appear to help and manage to push us out of the ruts. Four in the broken backseat is a tight fit. The first Sunday we all spoke at the youth conference. Youth from four churches were with us in LuHome. The team members and I presented a puppet show outside under two trees and did a beading project. I can’t say enough good things about our team members. They are doing a super job and are never afraid to share, give a testimony, or interact with the ... read more

After spending a month or so exploring the city of Nairobi, I was starting to get a bit anxious to see more of Kenya. Thus, Sam and I decided to venture outside of the city limits and head to Naivasha and spend a few days camping. Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot, and Hell's Gate are only about 20-30 minutes away from each other and was a perfect spot for me to get a little more accustomed to what I considered to be a stereotypical view of Africa. Being from a Western country, I had this view of what we would consider "zoo animals" running around the outskirts of the city and for the first time in my life, that's really what I saw. Driving through America can get boring at times (I'm looking at you Kansas) and ... read more

After 23 hours of travel a hotel room in Nairobi really looks great! We are traveling with Ashley, Sander, and Steven, three college age students as we head back to Kitale for two weeks of working with Helping Hands Mission. This trip includes a youth conference, school visits, and a big celebration for Pastor Timothy and Florence as they celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Over 1000 people are expected at this celebration so we are looking forward to see what this gathering will look like. In the morning we will travel out to Kitale by van (around 7 hours) and the youth conference will already be under way so there will be no time to be tired! The conference had to be rescheduled for the weekend. Because of a teacher strike students have to return to ... read more

Dafür konnten ... read more

We keep finding ourselves drawn back to Kenya. This trip will be short in time but we hope much can be accomplished in the three weeks. We are traveling with Don and Mary Greven from Wisconsin and Larry and Joyce Falldorf (our sister-in-law) from Alaska. The first three days we will make a quick trip to Masai Mara which is Kenya's largest Game Park. Then we will be traveling north to Kakemega with Pastor Timothy to begin our work. A construction team will arrive shortly after us to begin building a new school in this village. I can already imagine the excitement of the kids as they see the building begin to take shape! Gary will be working with Pastor Greven as 50 to 60 pastors will travel in for a week's seminar. The women will ... read more

Back to Eldoret, Kenya – 30 July 2012 On the way from Jinja to Eldoret we had the border crossing from Uganda to Kenya. The stamping of our passports to exit Uganda went smoothly. The stamping of them on the Kenya side took a lot longer. There is a ‘no-mans-land’ area in between the 2 countries check points which includes a bridge which is part of a hydro electric scheme. It is against the law to take any photos of the area. There have been a number of times that people in Uganda have wagged their finger at us when we have taken photos of them. We stopped along the way also to have lunch beside the bus/truck. Any leftover food we give to the locals. A lunch stop takes us an hour. We also stopped ... read more

Africa- here we go. 9 countries in 9 weeks and one step closer to home. We are starting this journey in Nairobi, Kenya with a few stops along the way before finishing in Cape Town, South Africa. After sadly saying goodbye to Europe we flew to Nairobi via Cairo and touched down at 3am. Blurry eyed and anxious with anticipation as to what was waiting for us on the other side of the immigration door we were met by Timathy- a Africa Travel Co (our tour company) representive who whisked us off to the campground, and decided to try get some sleep as we ignored the African sun starting to rise over the horizon. After spending the day at different levels of consciousness we arranged for a driver to take us to an elephant and ... read more

Nairobi - Lake Nakaru, 18 July 2012 After leaving Nairobi at 8.30am after a briefing from Wilson our Kenyan guide, who is from a coffee farming Kenyan family, we loaded up our bags into the new 4x4 bus. It has a couple of tables in it as well as power. We have a group of 16 of mixed ages. Two people have completed the trip we are just about to commence after this 14-day gorilla trek. They are from Ireland, England, NZ, Copenhagen, San Diego, Switzerland and we are the only ones from Aust. We drove for a couple of hours and stopped for lunch at a beautiful tree-covered picnic area. We had to have several guys on guard as there were baboons there who won’t give up re trying to get food. They can be ... read more

Maasai Mara 3-Day Tour 15-17 July 2012 After a quick breakfast at The Boulevard Hotel in Nairobi, our driver, Steven, picked us up at 7.30am. Steven gave us a quick briefing about the next couple of days and telling us that the road to and in the Maasai Mara National Reserve was very rough. Two months before, they had their heaviest rain for many years, leaving the roads with deep ruts from bogged vehicles. All vehicles had roofs that could be pushed up for excellent animal viewing. I was pretty excited because since Grade 7 and then again during High School history, I had learned of the Maasi People (and their jumping dance), and now I was soon to meet and see them. It took us 5 hours to get to the entry of the Reserve. ... read more
