I spent Saturday-Monday in Nakuru. It was so peaceful and much more "Kenya" than I have been staying in (in other words much more rual). I loved every minuet of my trip. I stayed at a missionary families house who have lived here for the last 13 years. I have felt so encouraged and strengthened by this family. They have two older children in the states, one of which is a 23 year old daughter in Philadephia! As they told me endless stories of their children I related so well with their struggles and dreams. Although I have yet to meet either of their older children (however, I do hope to meet Rachel when I am back in Philadelphia) I felt as though they were my very best friends. Their parents were full of wisdom and ... read more

Breakfast gives a confirmation of my long-term traveller status - I've worn pretty much the same clothes for the entire safari, whereas everyone else has rolled out a new outfit each day. I'm not sure I haven't lost the ability to tell if I smell. We only have one game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. You can't stray from the tracks in this park, so there are several occasions when we see animals but have to frustratingly stay a couple of hundred metres away. The reserve is centred on Lake Nakuru, which is home to well over a million flamingos, of the greater and lesser species. A good chunk of them are currently in Tanzania but there are plenty enough still in residence to create an amazing sight. It's not just the visual sensation of ... read more

Over the next three days we traveled to three game parks: Samburu National Reserve, Aberdare National Park near Nyeri Kenya and Lake Nakuru National Park. The hotel accommodations were far nicer that before. The hotel in Nyeri was originally a game camp for wealthy British that was built in the early 1930’s. The grounds were lovely, the room was enormous and the food was terrific. It was easily the most luxurious hotel we had encountered so far. The hotel in Nakuru was a moderate business class hotel that suited us just fine. We arrived at the Samburu park so early that we had to wait for the sun to come up so we could see any animals when we entered the park. It was well worth the wait as for the next few hours we overdosed ... read more

We had booked a four day safari which was going to be with a group, however the other people cancelled last minute so we ended up having a private safari for not much more money which was nice. Although it did mean having to put up with each other for a bit longer, it also meant that we had total freedom of where we went and at what time. We also had loads of room in the van. The first stop was Lake Nakuru which is known for its flamingos which are very impressive looking birds. The sight of thousands pink and white flamingos on a blue lake is something I’ll never forget. Lake Nakuru is known for being a bird watchers paradise and is home to the marabou stork, possibly the ugliest living thing imaginable. ... read more

... read more

I drove from the school to Nakuru by taxi. The driver is a friend of Vicki and Geoff's. We passed the Equator twice, and came down into the Rift Valley. The drive was beautiful... Nakuru is a big town and the scene of some of the election violence back in January. There I met up with the safari group, and we headed to Lake Nakuru, where we would spend the night. Once we were checked into the beautiful Flamingo Hill Camp, we went out to see the animals... The amount of wildlife is incredible...the pix will show better than words! I will put them in the next blog.... (All the pix from this part of the trip are here now)... read more

Once we got to Flamingo Lodge and checked in, we left on our first safari drive. The lake has no outlets, and it is very salty. The park is heavily wooded, with a large open area by the lake. Many trees blew down in a wind storm a few years ago, and you can see the devastation still. The first animal we came across was a leopard in a tree. It was hard to see, but it is rare to see them at all...and it turned out that this would be our only leopard viewing during the trip, so we were lucky! Next we went down by the lake, and got out and walked along the shore. It is safe there, if the rhinos aren't around. The flamingos and pelcans are in the thousands! As we ... read more

I awoke at 6.30am & had a hot shower before all the hot water was used ! We had beans on toast for breakfast. We decamped & left Kembu at 8.30am. We arrived in Nakuru ( meaning whirlwind or dusty) the capital of the Rift Valley Province at 12.30pm. I bought some postcards, stamps & some food. We were parked for about 1.5hrs so I mailed my postcards & ate lunch on the truck, while everybody bought souvenirs, water & food. Afterwards we entered Nakuru National Park. The park is about 188 square km & surrounds Lake Nakuru one of the Rift valley's 5 soda lakes. The lake is famous for the millions of Greater & lesser Pink Flamingoes that live here, there are pelicans as well. The park has Kenya highest concentration of Rhinos ( ... read more

Lake Nakuru is famous for Flamingos and White Rhino. We were all excited because not everyone had seen a Rhino and those that had had seen black Rhinos. We set off early to make our way to the park, on the drive to the gate we spotted a white Rhino!!! We entered the park and headed straight for the soda lake where we were surrounded by thousands of pink flamingos. We were allowed out of the truck to get closer to the lake. After loads of photos we got back in the truck and drove around the park. It wasn't long before we found buffalos, Elands (which our driver informed us is the biggest antelope in Africa) and of course white Rhinos. We found a family of Rhinos who were teaching the young one how to ... read more

Today we didn't really do very much, on the truck early and drove towards Kenya. We crossed the boarder and said goodbye to Uganda. We arrived quite late into our campsite just outside of Lake Nakuru NP, it was a really nice campsite shame about the rain and the leaking tents!!! The bar area had a table tennis table which resulting in a winner stays on competition which kept us entertained for ages. We had dinner a few more drinks then bed, early start tommorow game driving!!!... read more
