I really don't want to forget the amazing people I have met here, so I thought I'd take some time to write a little bit about all the amazing people I have met here :) Linnea - One of the first people I met - she took me under her wing and showed me around, taking me down to Brigade to get my money changed and showed me where the shops were. She is from Sweden and is a blonde girl with a big smile. She also taught me how to banter and haggle with the taxi drivers to get a decent fare. She travelled on to Kenya after I'd been here less than a week though, sadly. Ryan - One of the longer term volunteers. She is 21 and from Texas in the USA. She ... read more

School as usual this morning. I got there and as it was Friday, it was Religious Education. Except they did nothing. Absolutely nothing. From 9am until break at 10am, Lucy just sat there, chatting to other teachers and myself, whilst the students occupied themselves with stickers that somebody had brought in. I got a few photographs and Lucy and I talked about the education system in the UK vs. Ghana. They too, get visits (like we do with Ofsted), theirs being from the Ghana Education Service. But they don't seem to have lesson plans or anything, which is strange. I left after break, and didn't make a big deal of it being my last day. I'd bought every student in my class a pencil and an eraser, and some pens for Lucy to mark with. She ... read more

I slept really well last night, perhaps due to the fact I'd chucked out my mosquito net from around my bed. Every night I'd wake up tangled in it! Not like I'm sleeping in a mud hut - there are no mosquitos in my room anyway. When I arrived, most people were using them so I thought it'd be a good idea, but the other 3 I share with don't use them anymore now anyway. Got to school for 9am, only to find out that the students' exam papers STILL weren't ready....so it was teaching as usual. You may wonder why I even bothered going, seeing as they were supposed to have exams, but in Ghana, teachers can help the students in exams, so long as they don't answer the questions for them. Anyway - Lucy ... read more

This morning I got up a bit late, as I woke up in the night and couldn't get back to sleep. It was too hot, I was itching too much from mosquito bites, and Bobby was barking. I only found out in the morning WHY he was barking - because Peace had come home! He was missing for 4 days in total, and in that time we got the new puppy! I still made it to school in time though, and the students for once were fairly well behaved! The rest of the school's exam papers were ready so they started exams, but my class' papers weren't ready, so we had a normal morning. I find it strange here that there seems to be no structure to the lessons. The kids just sit around, annoying each ... read more

So this morning there was some confusion about whether the puppy is a boy or a girl...there has been a lot of debate! We spent last night looking after the pup, trying to get it to eat but to no avail. It didn't want water either, and just kept crying. I guess it's used to being around 30 kids at the orphanage, as well as the other puppies in the litter. I tried hand feeding it pasta and vegetables and it ate some, so that is good :) We took it back to the orphanage today though. We got to the orphanage for 9am, to get the kids ready to take them to the beach. They were super excited. The little ones had a big bowl of sunscreen they were smearing eveverywhere, and they were getting ... read more

This morning was school. The students have exams this week, yes, even my teeny tiny 4-6 year olds. I wasn't expecting to have to do much, but the exam papers weren't yet ready, so they will be starting them this afternoon instead. So the teacher hadn't brought the class' exercise books, which meant that we just got the students up to the board to write letters that we told them to, in chalk. One student wiped the chalk with her sleeve, and Lucy (their teacher) said "No, don't do that. You get cancer. Cancer!" which I found amusing. At breaktime, Steffi came over and got me to go and see a little girl who was poorly. This girl had ulcers all over her tongue and lips, and the school had put the purple liquid on her. ... read more

I woke up to the sound of the rain lashing down outside today. We are in the rainy season, but it tends to just rain for a few minutes every few days and then the sun comes out again. Not today though, it rained most of the morning. It was quite nice to get a hoody out of the wardrobe and wear that - made a nice change from wearing t-shirt and shorts, even though it was warm enough to. But it felt cosy to be all rugged up in a nice warm hoody. Upon leaving my room, I found out that Rusky had somehow got locked indoors overnight, and had a) pooed all over the floor and b) thrown up on the rug. We all just stood there staring at it, until Gorka went and ... read more

Today, we were taking the kids from school to the beach. At least, that's what we thought (damn translation issues). Turns out that even though we were going to Kokrobite beach, we weren't actually going to the beach. It's also the name of a place. So we got to school at 9am, ready. The kids were practising their drumming and dancing they'd be doing. So cool. In typical Ghanaian fashion, the bus didn't turn up until 11am though. We all piled on. Now bear in mind that this bus was the size of a very small van, and there were 40 or so children with us....everyone was crushed up and sitting on laps. Georgina, one of the 11 year olds at my school sat with me, and she is now my new buddy and won't leave ... read more

Seeing as I'm "working" tomorrow (going to the beach with the kids from school), I took today off. This morning, myself, , Kat, Shauna and Ryan attempted to go to the art market, as Shauna wanted to buy an African drum. But her bank account wasn't playing ball, and she couldn't get any money. So we went home. Shaun sorted out her money stuff, and in the afternoon, we decided to go to the mall. As soon as we got there, we headed for the ice-cream place, and I got two scoops - one of chocolate and one of orange, so it tasted like a Terry's chocolate orange (yum). Then we headed to the supermarket, and I stocked up on coke and chocolate, seeing as they don't seem to sell chocolate anywhere here in Teshie-Nungua (apart ... read more

I didn't know what to expect from my journey to Ghana. Really, I had no idea of what I was getting myself into. Maybe it was the constant studying and fear of failure from my nursing studies that kept my mind preoccupied with seemingly more vital day-to-day tasks; or maybe it was the daily reminder of my bodily deformities and chronic pain that left me wondering if I would be well suited for such a physical adventure; or maybe it was the ugly blackness of depression looming over me that made me believe that I was not good enough; whatever it was, I was fully unprepared to leave the comforts of home and head to Africa - and so, expected little. In truth, Africa was never on my list of places to visit in my lifetime. ... read more
